  • Solo Leveling #7 & Banished from the HERO’s PARTY #8

Posted on March 22, 2023 2:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

There’s a great deal going on in the seventh Solo Leveling novel.

We get the (apparently) full backstory on the war between the Rulers and Monarchs, why it’s happening on Earth, why the Shadow Monarch’s position has been so ambiguous, and why Jinwoo was chosen. The conclusion of his father’s arc is also included along with a small bit of romantic development. Most notable however is that this book features the dissolution of the titular leveling system… an ambitious thing to do considering there’s still five left to go.

As for Shin no Nakama‘s eighth entry, it’s basically reinforced all my earlier misgivings about the series. There’s just something particularly unnatural about the event development that makes it a bit of a chore to read. So yeah, I’ll be dropping the series here.

The Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga series (subtitle: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den) is a remarkably entertaining ‘walk a mile in another’s shoes’ type of story with a few minor romance elements.

The main plotline is resolved in just the first two novels (which were apparently originally all there was), but it seems poised to continue on into a more romance-heavy form that will presumably focus on the recently formed love triangle. Personally, I don’t really see any possible ‘good ending’ here unless they somehow rope Keigetsu into it and all four of them share via the bodyswap spell. Which would fit the setting but… I’m just not very interested in watching it happen.

The seventh Shin no Nakama novel meanwhile finishes up the arc started in the previous entry. Honestly, at this point I’m not really sure what to say about it with the way events seem to resolve themselves just as quickly as they suddenly appear.

While I wouldn’t say I actively dislike it, there’s something off-putting about the structure that nags at me while reading. I’ll probably end up dropping it if the eighth book doesn’t change things up.

  • Banished from the HERO’s PARTY #6 & That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME #14

The sixth Shin no Nakama novel continues from where the fifth left off with a similar mix of laid-back daily happenings and more serious background plotting. While that was pretty much a self-contained story however, this is not. Most of its brief length is devoted to detailing a certain character’s backstory (which will presumably become relevant in future novels) while it ends on something of a cliffhanger.

Speaking of which, the 14th Tensura novel also happens to end on a cliffhanger. Roughly 80% of it is a bunch of council meetings concerning Tempest’s recent overwhelming victory, while the last 20% or so illustrates that things don’t always go according to plan and there’s always someone out there stronger than you. I must admit I’m curious what tactic the author will use to pull the inevitable reversal to put Rimuru back on top, and hope it won’t just be a rehash of his demon lord evolution.

The 5th Shin no Nakama ja Nai to Yuusha no Party o Oidasareta node, novel (English subtitle: I Decided to Live a Quite Life in the Countryside) picks up from where the Anime, and presumably 4th novel, left off with a not so great opening. The main problems are the intermittent food focus (at this point I just assume it’s a Japanese thing to always be obsessing over food) and explicitly defining Ruti’s attachment to Red as sexual in nature despite its depiction being perfectly familial.

By the time of the gem beast fight though I had come around enough to actually be interested in following it further… albeit with low expectations since eventually the Ruti thing is going to have to be resolved.

After the lackluster 3rd Ansatsu Kizoku novel I was on the fence about whether to keep reading this series or not. The 4th however, while certainly not groundbreaking, certainly does change things up a bit in both good and bad ways. For the good we get two new secondary characters with different personalities. For the bad, one of those characters looks like they’re on the fast-track into the harem while an earlier secondary character goes through what should be a fairly massive 24-episode character arc in the span of a few chapters. Just incredibly rushed character development that feels completely random.
