Let’s start off with the new series:

Dainana Maouji Zilbagias no Maou Keikokuki (English subtitle: How the Seventh Prince Brought Down the Kingdom): A ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this focuses primarily on the drama associated with suddenly becoming the child of your worst enemy with occasional bursts of comic relief here and there. What’s interesting is that learning about this enemy race’s attributes from the inside only makes the protagonist more determined to destroy them. The only real issue here is toward the end with the introduction of the high elf petplay, which I can only see growing more repellant as events progress.

Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou o Kiwametemita: Also a ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this one is instead a guilty pleasure power fantasy with a protagonist that loves training to a degree similar to Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s. Unfortunately (like with Ore wa Subete o Parry suru) the event progression is so blisteringly fast that you reach a point that’s exceptionally hard to swallow before the first book even ends. The whole magical familiar contract situation is also all kinds of problematic.

Buchigire Reijou wa Houfuku o Chikaimashita. (English subtitle: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires): Basically Konyaku Haki kara Hajimaru Akuyaku Reijou no Kangoku Slow Life if it were a kingdom-building revenge story instead of a comedy. While at first the protagonist here comes across as fairly well-adjusted, by the end of the novel it becomes clear she’s arguably even more psychopathic than that series’.

Now on to the continuing ones:

Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan #7: Contrary to my earlier assumption the protagonist does not leave the stage… he doesn’t even manage to disguise his new identity long enough to reach the end of the novel. Honestly, I have no idea what even the point of faking his death in the first place was since it doesn’t seem to have accomplished much of anything he couldn’t have done openly.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken #18: The eighteenth Tensura novel starts out quite dire and remains so for roughly the entire first three-quarters. Just an incredible waste of time. Why use a cliffhanger in the prequel only to have it lead into a bog-standard meeting? Bizarre. The last quarter is quite good though, so there’s that.

The sixth Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan novel curiously does not deliver on the dark foreshadowing of the fifth and instead appears to mark a turning point in the story where our protagonist (presumably temporarily) leaves the stage. It’s fine I guess, if a bit rushed.

I had first skipped over Ichioku-nen Button o Renda shita Ore wa, Kizuitara Saikyou ni Natteita (English subtitle: ~THE UNBEATABLE REJECT SWORDSMAN~) due to the idiotic setup, and afterward by conflating it with Mugen Gacha. Eventually picking it up with the reasoning that the billion years of training could be ignored so long as it wasn’t constantly referenced I discovered that, essentially, it’s just a massively inferior Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. Go read/watch that instead.

The Watashi wa Teki ni Narimasen! series ends up a bit interesting for combining a reincarnation trope with a time loop. Unfortunately it doesn’t really do much else of note, having relatively low stakes, besides have a pretty fun/cute protagonist. Basically it’s the kind of series you can read off and on while doing other things. It’s really not made for binging.

The Lily Clairet series is similar in that respect, being a low-stakes slice of life series focused almost entirely on conversational interplay (one reviewer compared it to Bakemonogatari, and that’s fairly apt). Key things to note would be that it’s a natively English LN with a Japanese setting instead of a translated work, there aren’t actually any romance elements (besides some yuri subtext) until the sixth entry, and the protagonist is a near total doormat who lets everyone walk all over her.

The fifth Shinwa Densetsu novel escalates things by quite a bit. It’s been long hinted that there was something off with the protagonist’s past, and that darkness now appears to be poised to take center stage.

Moving on, it turned out I was right about one book not being enough to wrap up Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo‘s storyline. This sixth novel only manages to conclude the battle with Felix before quickly moving on (in a painfully contrived manner) to confront the death god behind the scenes and end on a double cliffhanger. It doesn’t really engender much enthusiasm for the finale to be honest.

Lastly we come to Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry. This wraps up (the first part of?) the academy arc before launching the protagonist off into the unknown on a new adventure. I seriously hope it never returns to the academy, as while the setting wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t particularly interesting or meaningful either.

I’ve been playing catch-up a bit with all the books that’ve piled up while I’ve been preoccupied with ESO. So rather than drawing these out two at a time I’m just going to stuff them all together.

Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru (As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World) #1–2: This series is basically your standard ‘reincarnated into a world suspiciously identical to a game world’, just set in a fantasy world which happens to include some game-like traits. So the protagonist can take advantage of his gameplay knowledge but does not know anything about the world or people that inhabit it. Aside from some weird expectations in the beginning (no idea why he thinks a 3 year old would/should be an expert at warfare) it’s a perfectly acceptable time-waster.

I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage #3: I was greatly worried about the third Moto Saikyou no Kenshi novel’s switch to an academy setting, but it handles it surprisingly well while also revealing exactly why he can’t use magic and appears to have no skills. I ended up enjoying it even despite the inclusion one of my least favorite fantasy isekai tropes (game-like dungeon-delving).

The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #4: Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry comes across as a bit rushed. It’s basically an extended rescue mission that feels very much like a highlight reel instead of a proper story.

Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 SUPER CHEAT POWERS #10: The tenth Lv 2 kara Cheat book looks to be where I’ll have to stop; the queen’s attraction to the elementary schooler with the appearance of an adult takes a rather central place toward the end and it’s just incredibly cringy all-around. Also an issue is that it’s hinted Blossom’s relationship status will travel in a similar direction.

Despite my earlier misgivings I decided to roll the dice on Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s continuation after all. Remarkably, the very issue I had with the first novel (the protagonist’s odd level of stupidity) was expressly addressed by the author in the second with the third basically staying the course. Makes me wonder if they got similar feedback to that effect during the original release. Regardless, it looks like I’ll be continuing to follow the series for a bit.

Originally I’d avoided reading the Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu series (English subtitle: Jobless Reincarnation) due to concerns that it would have a higher level of perversion than its Anime adaptation (since such adaptations usually tone that part down for a TV audience). As it turns out the fanservice level is pretty much the same, which is to say it’s certainly annoying but not quite at the deal-killing level.

The seventh novel picks up right from where the adaptation left off, making it a good place to jump in, and the author turned out to be pretty adept at storyline pacing. Most of the novels manage to work both as self-contained stories and parts of a greater whole, with only a couple being obviously incomplete (namely #16-17 and #20-21).

So overall it’s a pretty damn good series with the only real issues (aside from the splashes of perversion) being the protagonist’s frequent habit of second-guessing everything and the weird way he frames his anti-Man-God activities as if he’s working for a modern day corporation.

  • The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles & Adelheid #1-2

Posted on December 25, 2022 2:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan series apparently spans thirteen novels, but only the first of them appears to have been translated into English so far.

Simply speaking its a standard overpowered-protagonist isekai with above average world building and a mostly solid cast of characters. The main issue lies with that previous ‘mostly’. One character in particular is pretty terrible and, unfortunately, it just so happens to be the protagonist; he’s dumb. Really dumb. So dumb I almost stopped reading partway though on multiple occasions. And considering this is already his second time being summoned I have little hope he ever gets any better later in the series.

The Seventh Princess and The Reginnaglar Ceremony are the first two books in D.C. Haenlien‘s Adelheid series. A work they claim is a “Western Portal Fantasy”… which is either a shameless lie or an indicator of extreme ignorance.

What the series is, is a Japanese reincarnation isekai right down to the inexplicable cooking subfocus (explicitly featuring Japanese cuisine no less). There’s nothing ‘western’ about it and I strongly suspect ‘portal fantasy’ is just a nonsensical rebranding of the term isekai.

The author’s questionable attribution practices aside the novels themselves are in fact quite good. Solid world building, a varied cast of characters, and more or less believable event developments (on par with most ‘modern day conveniences get introduced to a fantasy world’ stories anyway). Only real issues at this point are some minor editing mistakes, the aforementioned inexplicable food focus, and the possibility that the modern day convenience angle gets too far out of hand.
