  • Enough with This Slow Life! #6 & The Frontier Lord #3

Posted on May 14, 2024 11:31 am by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita novel is about a quarter kingdom building (without much actual kingdom building), half warfare focused, and a quarter subtle romantic development. You also get quite a bit of backstory on the world’s creation as something of a bonus. Not sure where it will go from here since all his goals have been met.

Ryoumin 0-nin Start‘s third novel is pretty much all daily life scenes with a tiny bit of foreshadowing toward the end. It’s consistently entertaining, but along with the massive age gap I’m not much of a fan of the sheep… whose numbers have now multiplied. So I’m a bit ambivalent about continuing the series.

No surprises with the fifth Tensei shite High Elf novel; same sedate pacing and lightly philosophical musings. Only thing notable is that it looks like there’s going to be a bit of kingdom building in the next book.

Going to be dropping the Shujinkou ja Nai! series here due to the fairly infuriating story framing. If your protagonist knows how events are going to play out, and you don’t want your readers to know how they’re going to play out, then don’t write the book from that perspective to begin with! There’s no reason the protagonist should be omitting information from himself in his own head.

The second Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel showcases the source of the protagonist’s power; namely her ability to endlessly adapt to whatever situation she finds herself in. Of course why she has that ability is still a mystery, but considering where the book ends it seems likely it’s related to elves in some manner.

Speaking of elves, I had held off on continuing the Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita series after some reservations about some foreshadowing at the end of the first book. Fortunately, the child character doesn’t stay a child for long and fairly quickly moves off in a different direction. So for the most part the series remains a solo journey through various societies that get influenced both directly and indirectly by the protagonist’s whims.

It’s certainly nothing fancy, and there’s an issue with repetitious exposition, yet I’m still looking forward to future installments.

The sixth Madougushi Dahlia novel immediately gets (some of) the food rhapsodizing out of the way to introduce a semi-dramatic plotline focusing on making a particularly complex tool for her best friend. It also both closes up the loose ends with her ex-fiancé and puts the the seemingly slow romantic development in perspective; only about four months have passed since the start of the series.

The lengthily-titled Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita is a bit misleading in its description. He does not actually abandon living a slow life, just slightly alters the magnitude of how slow it is; he has no trouble spending decades advancing his hobbies (blacksmithing, swordfighting, eating, and finally magic).

While it in general reminds of Kino no Tabi (with an actually powerful protagonist who can drive change), the timescale ends up the defining feature with this first book covering roughly thirty years. And I certainly hope it continues at that scale if for no other reason than the apparently impending introduction of a child character.
