  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME #20 & Housekeeping Mage from Another World #9

Yeah, even if there are only two or so novels left I’m going to have to drop the Tensura series here. I simply have no interest whatsoever in reading about drawn-out conflicts involving characters that either had little previous focus or literally did not exist before this sequence of final battles.

The ninth Kasei Madoushi novel is unfortunately also a miss. The first segment is just incredibly bad in every respect, and the second is overflowing with forced sentimentality. There are a couple good moments scattered here and there… but nothing worth actually expending any effort to see.

The seventh Nidome no Yuusha novel thankfully keeps the incestuous vibes to a minimum. And though we don’t get to reunite with the protagonist’s previous two harem members yet, there is some focus on his former/current girlfriend. Not sure how I feel about the sci-fi-ish deity situation though.

Tensura‘s nineteenth entry is basically two sets of battles with a strategy meeting sandwiched between them. Well really one and a half, since the first is just a continuation of what began in the previous novel. While not terrible, I think it could do with about 60% less mechanic/stat-related exposition… and I’m not really sold on the idea that the author’s going to drag this final confrontation out for three more books.

Let’s start off with the new series:

Dainana Maouji Zilbagias no Maou Keikokuki (English subtitle: How the Seventh Prince Brought Down the Kingdom): A ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this focuses primarily on the drama associated with suddenly becoming the child of your worst enemy with occasional bursts of comic relief here and there. What’s interesting is that learning about this enemy race’s attributes from the inside only makes the protagonist more determined to destroy them. The only real issue here is toward the end with the introduction of the high elf petplay, which I can only see growing more repellant as events progress.

Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou o Kiwametemita: Also a ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this one is instead a guilty pleasure power fantasy with a protagonist that loves training to a degree similar to Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s. Unfortunately (like with Ore wa Subete o Parry suru) the event progression is so blisteringly fast that you reach a point that’s exceptionally hard to swallow before the first book even ends. The whole magical familiar contract situation is also all kinds of problematic.

Buchigire Reijou wa Houfuku o Chikaimashita. (English subtitle: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires): Basically Konyaku Haki kara Hajimaru Akuyaku Reijou no Kangoku Slow Life if it were a kingdom-building revenge story instead of a comedy. While at first the protagonist here comes across as fairly well-adjusted, by the end of the novel it becomes clear she’s arguably even more psychopathic than that series’.

Now on to the continuing ones:

Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan #7: Contrary to my earlier assumption the protagonist does not leave the stage… he doesn’t even manage to disguise his new identity long enough to reach the end of the novel. Honestly, I have no idea what even the point of faking his death in the first place was since it doesn’t seem to have accomplished much of anything he couldn’t have done openly.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken #18: The eighteenth Tensura novel starts out quite dire and remains so for roughly the entire first three-quarters. Just an incredible waste of time. Why use a cliffhanger in the prequel only to have it lead into a bog-standard meeting? Bizarre. The last quarter is quite good though, so there’s that.

Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! #6: This series‘ sixth entry is split into two parts. The first focuses on the unveiling of the protagonist’s invention and a hint of the future attention he’ll attract, while the second is the start of an academy arc. The author claims in the Afterword that ‘some things can only happen in a school setting’ as a defense for its inclusion… but I have to call bullshit on that.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku #10: This marks the start of the protagonist’s journey into the past. Featuring an almost entirely new cast of characters it nevertheless keeps up the general mood and feel of what came before. Will be interesting to see how/if all these fairly massive changes affect the future timeline.

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite #14: Serving as the series‘ conclusion, this final entry does a remarkably good job of wrapping up loose ends. The way they kind of just throw the whole Cave Quest plotline in the trash is a bit too meta, and it really never should have been included at all, but there’s otherwise nothing to complain about.

TenSura #17: This book of side-stories defied my earlier expectations. While the first one is pretty weak the rest are quite good and shed some light on both what the fire dragon was up to chasing soul fragments and how the Empire is going about rebuilding (neither of which would’ve worked as part of the main plotline). Looks like I’ll be continuing the series after all.

Nise Seijo #3: I suspected this novel might be the series’ conclusion, but that turns out to not quite be the case. While it does conclude the main plotline, the aftermath/epilogue is left for a fourth and final book. Definitely interested to see where the characters go from here.

The sixth Kasei Madoushi novel starts off with an adventure which pushes Alec to finally confront his past, moves on to reveal said past in full detail, and finishes up with a stand-alone adventure. Strangely… what would be infuriating in another novel (the repetition of events from slightly different angles) somehow works here.

Unsurprisingly Tensura‘s sixteenth novel busies itself with going over what happened in the previous battle and covering a bit of the aftermath/clean-up. It also however goes over what was happening in the Labyrinth toward the end of said battle, which kind of came out of nowhere with how important it ended up being.

There are some issues though. The first is that the author decided to ignore their editor’s warnings and started power ranking everyone with specific power levels in giant stat blocks… which is just total nonsense and a complete waste of space. None of those numbers mean anything! They’re completely arbitrary! The second is that it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, for no discernable reason, when the next book is apparently going to be a collection of short stories from various points of view. Why would you do such a thing unless you hate your readers?

May end up having to drop it if said short story compilation doesn’t cover any interesting events.

  • Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character?! #2 & That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME #15

Posted on November 27, 2022 3:25 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da! volume (“The Labyrinth of Memory”) really hammers home how much I dislike Aisha; a main romantic interest who looks/acts like a child, claims to be an adult, and is ambiguously aged for plausible deniability. Just incredibly distasteful all-around and unlike the first book, there’s nothing really here to offset that. Worse, if the Afterword is to be believed, the next novel will focus on her even more. So I think this will be where I get off.

The follow-up to the cliffhanger at the end of Tensura’s 14th installment begins by turning back time to see how things fell apart from various other perspectives… which ends up being a fairly annoying thing to do since it doesn’t really add anything.

Once it starts moving forward though it does so quite smoothly, laying everything out in a remarkably efficient manner considering the shear mass of characters we’re dealing with here. My fears that this would be a repeat of his demon lord awakening sequence thankfully went unrealized and instead you get just peak overpowered steamrolling. Which makes sense since you never actually got to see him fight after having evolved so many of his subordinates.

The Afterword also answered my earlier question as to why there were so many more volumes to go despite the original web novel not appearing to have much remaining content: The LNs have apparently diverged enough by this point to become their own story.

So all-in-all a fairly satisfying installment, and I’m looking forward to seeing where exactly the author intends to take this version.

The sixth Shin no Nakama novel continues from where the fifth left off with a similar mix of laid-back daily happenings and more serious background plotting. While that was pretty much a self-contained story however, this is not. Most of its brief length is devoted to detailing a certain character’s backstory (which will presumably become relevant in future novels) while it ends on something of a cliffhanger.

Speaking of which, the 14th Tensura novel also happens to end on a cliffhanger. Roughly 80% of it is a bunch of council meetings concerning Tempest’s recent overwhelming victory, while the last 20% or so illustrates that things don’t always go according to plan and there’s always someone out there stronger than you. I must admit I’m curious what tactic the author will use to pull the inevitable reversal to put Rimuru back on top, and hope it won’t just be a rehash of his demon lord evolution.

By the end of the 12th TenSura novel I was feeling somewhat disenchanted by the series. A mood that its follow-up did not immediately lift. It starts out rather slow unfortunately with far too much time spent detailing the technical aspects of the Empire’s tanks/airships. Once the limiter gets removed though it picks up quite a bit, ending up one of the more entertaining displays of utter domination. The Dwarf interlude and epilogue stand out in particular.

The English versions of the Leandale no Daichi nite novels sadly do not quite match the quality of the Anime adaptation. Partly (mostly?) because the publisher seems to have used their editing B-team. Not only is there a bad case of ‘same voice’ but there are quite a number of typos/mistakes as well. Even worse, the end of the 4th book and beginning of the 5th blatantly contradict.

How do you get “To my fiancée” from “Name her” (the latter being the correct phrase)? Was there no proofreading at all?

Content-wise however I’d say they’re pretty comparable, with the only notable exception being the abnormally large food focus. Because of course there’s a food focus. Only other thing to note is that the transition from the end of the Anime to the start of book 4 is not a smooth one since the former only adapts half of book 3. This is not an issue for that 4th book (since it includes a recap) but appears to be one for the 5th, which prominently features re-occurring characters who did not appear in the Anime.

Seanan McGuire‘s fifteenth October Daye novel is completely centered on the protagonist’s wedding. Despite not actually being short, it feels short both due to everything taking place in one location and because the story itself is episodic. If it weren’t for the fact that this event is pretty important to the overall plotline I would’ve said it was merely a transitional novel (similar to the Unkindest Tide).

The twelfth TenSura novel meanwhile is basically a repeat of Book 6 without any of the action. Also with a 1-year timeskip and an abrupt ending. On the positive side of things they don’t dwell too much on the Labyrinth RPG aspects and it appears as though the next book will have quite a bit of movement with the whole start of the East vs. West war. Then again, there are apparently six more books already published in this series so I can’t rule out additional volumes of nothing but preparation (and if that’s the case for the next entry I’ll probably just drop the series).

Despite there being an Anime adaptation of this franchise currently airing, it seemed like a good idea to check out the light novel version while waiting for that to finish. Both because I was impatient and because the Anime is based on the manga version (the web novel, light novel, and manga versions each have their own quirks).

Transferring over from the end of the Anime‘s 36th episode into the 6th and 7th novels, event-wise at least, is a fairly smooth experience. The main things of note are a difference in translation sensibilities (‘magic-born’ instead of ‘majin’ for instance), a much greater focus on RPG-like elements, and some minor character differences (e.g. Raphael being male, Rimuru’s personality trending more toward smarmy than carefree).

The 8th & 9th books on the other hand stand out both for being a heavily food-centric two-parter and for introducing the series’ worst concept so far: Tempest’s Labyrinth. Just unimaginably stupid; this isn’t Danmachi. And, worst of all, Book 10 devotes its first hundred pages or so to more completely extraneous Labyrinth bullshit. I sincerely hope that the Anime completely cuts out everything related (if it ever gets that far).

As for the 11th novel, there’s thankfully not really much to complain about here aside from the stage having being set for potential harem shenanigans later.

Ultimately when all is said and done, while the LN version isn’t objectively bad, it’s notably worse than the Anime version to the point that I would strongly suggest sticking to that unless you really like the franchise or don’t mind reading something that ends up intermittently annoying.
