A character drama with thriller and mystery elements which happens to include a slight romance subplot.

Posted on October 3, 2018 9:59 am by Offkorn Comment

After being unable to save Kurisu, Rintarou decides to abandon time travel and live a normal life despite the threat of an impending third world war. A choice sorely tested after encountering an advanced AI based on Kurisu’s research and past memories, an AI which reminds him of everything he had tried so hard to forget.

This is an alternative conclusion to Steins;Gate, continuing from where the β version of its 23rd episode left off. It’s intended to be watched after that and features a similar genre composition weighted more heavily toward drama.

Tsukasa Taira’s life as an average unassuming college student is suddenly turned upsidedown one night when she nearly becomes the latest victim of a vampire attack. Though saved by a member of a special task force, she soon finds herself in a different kind of danger when he suddenly kisses her after losing control of his bloodlust. As it happens Yuuki Anzai is not human, and unable to get him out of her head she becomes ever more involved with the supernatural nightlife.

A romantic drama with conspiracy thriller, police procedural elements and intermittent bursts of action.

After Juri Yukawa’s brother and nephew are suddenly kidnapped off the street, her grandfather casts a spell using an old stone sending her, himself, and her father into a realm of static time known as Stasis. Within this realm they can move freely while the rest of the world is completely frozen, but they’re not the only ones with this ability and they soon come into conflict with others intent on using the realm for far darker purposes.

A thriller with occasional action scenes and a small amount of comic relief.

While following the trail of the vigilante killer ‘B’, the officers of the Royal Investigation Service become entangled in the machinations of the secret organization Market Maker. They are looking for B for reasons of their own and seek to lure him out of hiding with elaborate crimes, crimes which few besides the eccentric Keith Flick can see the truth of.

Part mystery thriller and part sci-fi action with a moderate streak of comic relief.

  • Assorted Procedurals and Dramas

Another group of non-Anime shows recently watched on a whim:

    • House M.D.: Yeah, Sherlock Holmes in a hospital is an apt description. So it’s not surprising that, as with Sherlock, the banter ends up the best part of the show. The dramatic aspects (particularly the crime-related ones) don’t work anywhere near as well… which ends up becoming a serious problem when it begins to place a much larger focus on them. The end of the 4th season marks the turning point and I wouldn’t suggest watching beyond the 5th unless you don’t mind skipping through large swathes of melodrama to reach the intermittent good bits.
    • The Unusuals: Tries too hard to be quirky and ends up blatantly artificial. Still often amusing in its ludicrousness though, and does manage to strike a more believable balance as it progresses.
    • Once Upon a Time: A mix of fantasy and urban fantasy that would’ve been better without the kid. I like the way it interweaves the various story-worlds together, but that’s about it.
    • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: While heavier on the fantasy aspects, it has the exact same feel as the parent series.
    • Stalker: Like a stalker Inception or something. Stalkers everywhere. It’s actually pretty interesting, albeit incredibly creepy.
    • Designated Survivor: Exciting, but it could do without the family issues angle. The spontaneous roadblocks/escalations early-on also tend to come across as forced.
    • The Good Wife: Features a solid mix of drama, thriller-like suspense, and situational comedy (both low-key and exaggerated) with a fantastic cast. The main flaws would be an unfortunate fondness for dramatic zooms and lingering close-ups along with the seemingly neverending game of law firm musical chairs.
    • Rosewood: Eh. The smugness is kinda overwhelming and the lab segments come across like performance art.
    • Castle: The first episode has a number of serious structural and personality-based issues which are thankfully nowhere near as severe in later ones. Eventually it becomes a highly entertaining mix of drama and comic interludes with a dynamic very similar to Bones‘ (with a less believable romance angle). I strongly suggest skipping the last season however, as similar to House this show suffers when that balance gets upset and later seasons lean more and more toward drama.
    • CSI: Cyber: Incredibly staged. This kind of style might work for a campy gameshow; it’s a complete failure in a crime procedural.
    • Secrets and Lies: Nice atmosphere, but a couple key characters (including the detective) simply don’t work at all.
    • Murder in the First: Gritty. In a good way for the most part. Gets over-zealous with its messaging though.
    • Cracked: I don’t like the male protagonist at all. The level of crazy is also, perhaps unsurprisingly, very high.

In the years following a terrorist attack that leveled Sarajevo, developed nations the world over drastically increased their security measures while less fortunate countries began to turn into genocidal warzones. Into these areas the USA sends a team of emotionally deadened super-soldiers in search of the man responsible for the outbreaks of insanity.

A dialog-heavy thriller with a strong initial literary theme and bursts of explicit action.

Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is a prestigious facility with a highly unconventional instruction style that boasts a near-100% graduation/employment rate. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji has been accepted to this school and for a certain reason has ended up in class 1-D, which is where all of the ‘inferior’ students are placed in order to give the others someone to look down on and avoid becoming.

A school-life thriller with a strong philosophical streak, a few detective and romance aspects, and minor ecchi/action elements. The series is split between a normal school setting and a survival test on a deserted island.
