  • Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou

Posted on April 9, 2019 12:19 pm by Offkorn Comment

Warned as a child by the Golden Saint Scorpio Milo of the impending rebirth of a dark god and her own cruel fate, Kyouko resolves to become strong enough to defy fate and protect her sister Shouko from all harm. A resolve tested a mere five years later when minions of the dark goddess Eris suddenly appear with the intention of using Shouko’s body as a vessel for their master’s rebirth.

An action-drama with a small amount of comic relief. It’s a spinoff side story to the main Saint Seiya series, taking place at some point after the 73rd episode, which requires having seen that first to understand the references.

  • Zoku Owarimonogatari

Posted on April 7, 2019 10:52 am by Offkorn Comment

Although Koyomi’s story has ended with his graduation and the successful resolution of the Ougi situation, what if things had turned out differently? He gets the chance to find out one morning after being suddenly sucked into a mirror leading to an alternate dimension, a place where the people he’s come to know so well are not as he remembers them.

An abstract, ecchi and dialogue-heavy addition to the Monogatari franchise which requires having seen most of the previous works to follow. It takes place between Owarimonogatari and Hanamonogatari.

With anti-technology protests popping up around the globe tensions are rising between Academy City and the Roman Catholic Church. It’s in the grip of this tense atmosphere that Touma is secretly recruited by Motoharu to destroy a specific religious artifact said to be the source of the discontent, setting him on a collision course with the mages of God’s Right Seat.

A continuation of Toaru Majutsu no Index II. Though it begins with a brief recap, you’ll need to have at least watched both that and Railgun S in order to understand the character relations.

Due to a twist of fate, the recently orphaned novelist Subaru Mikazuki ends up living together with an abandoned cat wary from time spent on the streets. With neither being particularly sociable their initial relationship is an awkward one, yet as time goes by the small actions of day-to-day life together begin to add up to something more.

A pet-centric daily life comedy with minor dramatic elements. Note that part of each episode is a retelling of events from the cat’s point of view.

The war against the invading otherworldly creatures known as Disas has been over for 3 years, with victory achieved with the help of allied spirits who granted great magical power to select human girls. Scars remain however, and when a magically-backed terrorist organization begins to move these now veteran magical girls are forced into battle once more.

A graphic action-drama focused on PTSD and torture. It also includes a moderate level of both comic relief and ecchi.

In the grim darkness of the future otaku culture is on the decline due to a mysterious viral epidemic which consumes people’s memories of related media. Even once grand Akiba is now but a shadow of its former self. Yet not all hope is lost, as the girls of the Rabbit Shed Shop café are still putting up a fight against the virus’ spread and restoring memories one franchise at a time.

A magical girl action-comedy with minor ecchi aspects. It’s mostly episodic and parodies a number of different media works.

When dark forces threaten the world’s future, the mysterious being known as Boogiepop appears to thwart their plans. But just who, or what, is Boogiepop? And why has Shinyo Academy become such a hotspot for unexplained occurrences?

An initially achronological mystery series featuring occasional bursts of action and frequent philosophical musings. Though it’s a sequel to the previous Boogiepop series it can also be watched as a stand-alone.

Roped into participating in a magic show one evening, Mei Ayazuki suddenly awakens to find herself in what appears to be the Meiji era. Having grown up isolated from those around her as a result of being able to perceive spirits, she’s shocked to discover that here in this time period her ability is not only recognized but in fact greatly prized by the assortment of stylish men she finds herself surrounded by.

A partly episodic history-centric romantic comedy with a few harem elements and tertiary dramatic aspects. It’s an alternate version of the previously released movies centered on a different suitor.

  • Thirteenth Child Trilogy & Elise Kova

Posted on March 27, 2019 5:44 am by Offkorn Comment

Patricia C. Wrede‘s Thirteenth Child trilogy is a very slow burn; don’t go into it expecting a hero’s journey. Instead it’s closer to an alternative history slice of life series, with each book being ~90% focused on the protagonist’s daily interactions/activities and only the last chapter or two providing an opportunity for her to do something that catches everyone’s attention. There are also a number of loose ends relating to the world’s metaphysics and the tendency for a chapter to end with a dire proclamation only to have nothing come of it in the next is a consistent annoyance. Yet despite all that there’s just something about Wrede’s dialog style that makes the journey entertaining enough to forgive the open-ended and somewhat anti-climatic conclusion.

Elise Kova’s Golden Guard trilogy is less a trilogy and more a loose collection of short stories. The first is a bit of an action-mystery, but besides that is hard to pin down. The second is a painfully generic paranormal romance story minus the paranormal. The third is something of a buddy comedy. All three together are about the size of one normal book and honestly I can’t recommended bothering with them since they add nothing to the sequel.

That sequel being her previously published Air Awakens series. Interestingly enough the genre here is different from all three of the short stories mentioned above, with this being something of a combination hero’s journey paranormal romance. It starts out slow, picks up in the second book, begins to fall apart in the third, completely falls apart in the fourth, and takes a hard turn into pitch black tragedy in the the fifth: Human mutation, cannibalism, incest, miscarriage, and mental corruption/degradation all make an appearance. Ultimately I can’t recommended this series either due to all the inconsistencies surrounding the protagonist.

Unrelated to the the two works above (though almost immediately recognizable as from the same author due to the fondness for using names over pronouns), Kova’s Loom Saga is a relatively straightforward paranormal romance story for the most part which quickly brought to mind Lilith Saintcrow’s Dante Valentine series. This series leans more toward steampunk instead of cyberpunk though and takes place in its own fantasy world. While the first book is pretty good and the second is decent, the third comes across as very unfocused and almost offhanded in how everything gets resolved; what ends up most interesting about it is how Arianna ends up ceding the protagonist spot to Florence.
