  • Quanzhi Gaoshou 2: the King*s avatar & Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha ~Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei Shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou~

Posted on December 4, 2020 12:50 pm by Offkorn Comment

The follow-up to Tebie Pian, though it’s been longer than expected in arriving, fully delivers on its promises. The same effortless destruction of pro-player scheming you’ve come to expect from the series with better animation (than the first season). Not much else to say really; either you like the franchise or you don’t.

Completely unrelated to the above beyond sharing the ‘overpowered protagonist’ trait, Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha doesn’t take itself very seriously for the most part. Choosing instead to play up the genre’s various tropes in a manner similar to a homage. And, surprisingly enough, it manages to do so fairly competently (even touching on some pretty dark themes)… at least until the lackluster confrontation-heavy conclusion anyway.

  • Sword Art Online: Alicization & War of Underworld

Posted on September 23, 2020 5:37 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

There are a great many problems with the three part sequel to the SAO Ordinal Scale movie.

The central one is the ill-conceived fusion of the sci-fi modern day plotline and Underworld’s essentially stand-alone fantasy plotline. The two never had any reason to mix. Assassin’s Creed does something similar, and the criticisms about the way that franchise mixes its past/present settings hold doubly true here since Underworld is effectively self-contained as opposed to being a reflection. The author could have easily wrote Alice and Eugeo’s story as its own thing with no association whatsoever to Kirito’s group and ended up with a far more consistent and immersive product.

Pretty much all of the remaining issues can be tied back to Kirito’s involvement with the story; spontaneous power-ups, random cameo appearances, last minute saves, questionable character motivation, harem elements, and bizarre plot twists all. Really, the only flaw that can truly be called its own is the re-occurring theme of using psychosexual megalomaniacs as main villains.

Vaguely related to all of that in a ‘you can probably watch this if you’re a fan of the genre’ sense are the series Runway de Warrette and Princess Connect! ReDive. The first of which is a fashion industry-focused Cinderella story overloaded with assholes who magically become nice while the latter is a conventional fantasy action-comedy whose protagonist has the personality of a particularly dull puppy.

  • Tejina Senpai & ITAI no wa IYA nano de BOUGYORYOKU ni KYOKUFURI Shitai to OMOIMASU.

Posted on August 23, 2020 4:19 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

The half-length episode series Tejina Senpai starts out as an amusing enough version of Ueno-san, only to run out of steam partway through and lean ever more heavily on lewdness as a crutch. The joke variety is also lacking and the additional two members that eventually get added to the club don’t really help much in that department (unless you’re a fan of inexplicable pseudo-incest).

Also a comedy, Bofuri takes the virtual fantasy land action-adventure aspects of Sword Art Online and combines them with a somewhat random style of reaction humor focusing on Mary Sue parody. Before the guild gets formed most of the amusement comes from the sharp contrast between Maple’s appearance/personality and fondness for unintentional brutality… and this part of the show works fantastically. Eventually however it leans too far into the ‘overpowered main character’ shtick to the point event developments become tiresome. Remarkably high-quality action scenes throughout though.

That’s the danger of parody: You run the risk of becoming the very thing you’re trying to laugh at.

  • Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

Posted on July 1, 2018 12:23 pm by Offkorn 2 Comments

The VR MMORPG Gun Gale Online attracts all kinds of players, from amateur enthusiasts, to military otaku, to even professional soldiers, yet few stand out as much as LLENN. Exceptionally small, exceptionally fast, and decked out in bright pink equipment she’s been dubbed the ‘Pink Devil’ for her habit of ambushing other players. It’s not long after this that she’s tracked down by the mysterious Pitohui… who convinces her to branch out into squad-based battles.

An action series with a central focus on firearms and tactical combat, large amount of comic relief, and a small dramatic subplot. While it references and takes place after SAO II, watching it does not require having seen any of the previous SAO Anime.

Known as the “God of Fighting” in the hugely popular MMO Glory, Xiu Ye ends up screwed over by the manager of the pro-player club he leads and forced into early retirement. Contractually barred from re-joining the professional scene for the next year, he decides to work his way up from nothing on a new game server with the intent of eventually taking back the top spot.

Half set in a fantasy gameworld where all the action takes place, and half set in the real-world where the tone is more serious/reflective. Both parts are peppered with comic relief.

  • Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?

An MMO-playing otaku finds out that his online wife (Ako), who’s not a very good player, is a socially awkward girl in real life who can’t separate online fantasy from offline reality. Not only that, she and the other two members of his guild all turn out to attend the same school he does. Together they try to both improve Ako’s skills in game and help her separate fantasy from reality.

The show alternates between virtual reality settings (primarily fantasy), depicting the characters’ online gaming adventures, and a modern day school setting. The comedic setup isn’t much different from an ecchi harem at the base level, the main difference being that only one of the girls is pursuing the male protagonist.
