  • The Seven Rings & AUGMENTED ASPECTS: ROYAL BLOOD

The conclusion to Nora Roberts‘ Lost Bride trilogy is much like the previous two books. Overall I’d have to say this is far more a romance than a mystery series, as the actual mystery is resolved pretty quickly (through brute force) in the last third. To the point I feel the witch wasn’t even necessary; her role could’ve theoretically been handled by a more competent version of the protagonist’s ex-fiancé.

The second Augmented Aspects novel expands on the first remarkably well despite going off in what seems like a fairly random direction. Rogue/Healer is an exceedingly rare character archetype after all. It is not without its problems though, some more serious than others. Less serious ones being the description being misleading and there being an assortment of minor technical issues, while the most serious is a pretty large plot hole.

In the last part of the novel it’s stated that her magical beacon flaw (sensible) and green eyes (utter nonsense) are present in all of her doppelganger forms. Which if true would’ve made it impossible for her to have taken the place of the local Mage Guild Master, let alone continue to impersonate him. How the web novel readers didn’t catch this, nevermind a professional editor, is baffling.

    LIVE WITH THUNDER

Thankfully free of any actual cultivation, this is a pretty dark and situationally overpowered protagonist (most of the time he’s relatively weak) revenge story which takes place in a cultivation-like setting. It’s written well, the characters are diverse, and the plot developments manage to feel grounded despite their inherent insanity.

the ELF WHO WOULD Become a Dragon

With far slower pacing than Bookbound Bunny these books are more interested in philosophical/metaphysical musings and mindset, rather than power-related, progression. It almost comes across like a bait and switch and I can’t help but suspect that at some point it will just go “so now you know why she set out to become a dragon” and end right there.

    AFTERLIFE 2.0

Although it started out interesting and remained so for an appreciably long time, around the 40th chapter or so I feel the story kind of lost its way. Events began to remind me of Behold! The Harbinger of Doom in that they felt more random than planned, seeming to have little connection to any greater narrative. Was also kind of annoyed by some inconsistencies in the protagonist’s character.

The Protagonist’s Sister Is Actually The Strongest

A story which, author note aside, reads like a comedy-focused mashup of Jeonjijeok Dokja Sijeom and Na Honjaman Level-Up. A bit too irreverent for my taste.

    TALES OF THE ENDLESS EMPIRE

While reminiscent of A Relatively Powerful Mage, this goes the murderhobo route and appears to have less racism. Unfortunately, starting from the 39th chapter it also features a rather large number of technical errors and awkwardly-worded sentences. Far too many to force my way through at any rate.

  • BOOKBOUND BUNNY & Legend of the Arch Magus: Before The Finale

Posted on November 25, 2025 2:02 pm by Offkorn Comment

Despite Lunadea‘s first Bookbound Bunny novel being both slowly paced and focused on training, I ended up enjoying it a great deal. The speed at which the protagonist develops her abilities feels just right, and while it’s rather shocking this wasn’t two books rather than one I must admit that the magic test works far better as a clean break than the magic ritual would have. Curiously though there isn’t much more content available beyond that point as the web novel version is only about halfway through the second volume (assuming a similar final pagecount).

That second novel also focuses on something I’m not generally fond of, the beginning of an academy arc, and yet again the author manages to perfectly nail the developmental pacing; despite being slow the events never start to drag or feel superfluous. My only complaints for this section are that it’s odd both that the protagonist hasn’t yet looked in the library for books on the moon or stars (to resolve the spell name issue) and the way the basilisk girl expects her to share all her deepest, darkest secrets despite them having known each other for barely more than a week.

The fifteenth of Michael Sisa‘s Legend of the Arch Magus novels turned out to be the penultimate entry in the series rather than the conclusion. Fortunately however, for a certain definition of the word, it starts out so awful that (for me) it may as well be the series’ finale. I don’t recall one of his apprentices being a pre-teen, but giving that character such a major focus out of nowhere was the exactly wrong move to make.

    IDEWORLD CHRONICLES: The art magE

An interesting urban fantasy series with a sizable yet not overwhelming amount of abstraction and philosophical musings. While my only complaint regarding the first book is that it seems far too convenient for a seer to just fall into her lap that way, there were a bunch of minor annoyances in the second which ultimately made me drop it after it took what felt like an exceptionally arbitrary turn in regards to her thief mentor.

    HOCUS, POCUS, HYPOTHESIS

Very similar to the author’s Low-Fantasy Occultist series, this one initially doesn’t have the same pacing problems. Unfortunately however, it seems to have developed them in a recent big town arc that bears a certain resemblance to the mage tower arc concurrently published in Occultist. Ended up having to drop it during the vampire embassy visit.

Not (Just) A Mage Lord Isekai

A story reminiscent of From Londoner to Lord and Rise of the Frontier Lord. Readable enough for the most part if you like power fantasies (though low on believability), but I had to skip through most of the crafting and ‘trial’ segments and wasn’t fond of the protagonist’s catchphrase. Eventually had to drop it near the end of the third novel when my suspension of disbelief finally gave out.

    ON COSMIC TIDES

I’m not fond of the cultivation genre at the best of times, but was hoping the ‘time travel isekai’ aspects would be enough to counteract that. Unfortunately, only six chapters in and the protagonist had already made enough questionable decisions to fully extinguish any desire to press on.

    Spark of War

Starts out quite good, but after the big reveal it’s just one unbelievable occurrence after another. Really had to force myself to get to the end of the first book, and it definitely was not worth it.

    SOLBORN: The Eternal Kaiser

Only got a few chapters into this before losing interest. The abstract mystery style of the presentation just doesn’t work for me.

  • Limitless Path & Moonrise: Rise of the Bloodmoon Witch

Posted on November 8, 2025 3:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

Garrett Byers‘ first Limitless Path novel reminds me of Primer for the Apocalypse. I like how most people are pretty chill about the whole system integration thing and both the characters and their interactions are entertaining. The main issues would be that the high level of acceptance isn’t actually all that believable, the romance comes out of nowhere and advances at a blistering pace, and it’s extremely strange that none of these girls appear to have any friends.

Still, I greatly enjoyed it and continued on to the web novel version only to find that the author promptly squandered all their forward momentum with thirty or so chapters, roughly half a book’s worth, of training and inexplicable crafting segments. Almost worse is that they’re followed up by the protagonist immediately going out to solo-clear dungeons again instead of letting her sisters or girlfriend fully catch up. This isn’t Na Honjaman Level-Up where there’s no one she can trust, nor Ultimate Level 1 where she’s on a deadline with a god hunting her; there’s no excuse to justify that action (especially considering the baffling decision to spend weeks learning blacksmithing).

Chad Maske‘s first Rise of the Bloodmoon Witch novel is shockingly good… although perhaps it would’ve been less so if I hadn’t been avoiding their Ashes of My Many Lives series. Regardless, it’s quite good with a complex setting, and a flawed, struggling, yet still technically overpowered protagonist. It’s particularly interesting that the roommate actually looks like she’ll remain a roommate instead of becoming a love interest in the way this kind of paranormal romance story usually likes to go.

    Terminal Fleet

An interesting sci-fi series that’s kind of a cross between Cyperpunk and Warhammer 40k. It starts off quite good only to degrade a bit with the whole infiltration plotline; there’s already a story there with the romance and new job, you don’t need incongruously personal world-ending stakes on top of that.

    REVOLVER CHRONICLES

While I’m not a fan of the Dark Souls mechanics that have been hamfisted into the combat scenes, or any game mechanics really, the author clearly both has a detailed vision and executes it competently.

    Princess of the Void

A remarkably good sci-fi paranormal romance series which, curiously, feels a little like Risou no Himo Seikatsu. Although I enjoyed the first book for the most part, ultimately all the drama around the relationship dynamic comes across as manufactured semantics.

    Swan Song

First thing to note about this is the unusual prose; there are fairly frequent odd turns of phrase scattered about. That aside the beginning is pretty interesting, if a bit disjointed… but unfortunately the complete 180 on the day before his execution is brutal.

    Throne of Gods

The events here lack grounding. Things seem to happen only because the story needs them to, with the characters’ actions feeling particularly abnormal.

    BY HER GRACE

This stands out for having an unambiguously evil protagonist, sort of like a solipsist version of Youjo Senki‘s that doesn’t believe in meritocracy. It also ends up highlighting the flaw in pretending to be harmless to make it easier to dispose of your enemies; most of the time you are, in fact, harmless. Fortunately the protagonist herself eventually realizes this and begins to take more direct action.

    THE NESTED WORLDS

An extremely interesting setup, if a bit forced, and feels like it could be something along the lines of Snatch or Baccano!. Unfortunately for me, the random cliffhanger at the end of the first chapter utterly destroyed any interest in continuing.

    FRAGMENTED FLAMES

While this starts out very good with fantastic character interactions, the pacing rather quickly runs off the rails during that forced event in the forest. The whole thing is supposed to be them dealing with being five separate perspectives, and yet they’re already merging ten chapters in? Barely a week after being split?

The Dark Lady’s Guide to Villainy

Not enthused by the idea of a grown woman with her own apartment and ideal job being forced to go back to school.

    arcanist in Another worlD

While there’s nothing I can point to specifically, this kind of feels like reading a cultivation novel without any of the cultivation. It’s an odd sensation and I ended up having to drop it only a few chapters in.

    God Of Velmoryn

It’s strange. Objectively speaking the protagonist here isn’t any worse than Tensura‘s personality-wise, yet for some reason his behavior comes across as absolutely infuriating. If that doesn’t bother you though the story seems interesting enough.

    BECOMING THE DARK LORD

This starts out extremely rough, requiring some significant suspension of disbelief to reach the point where the companion is introduced. And… I can’t say it’s worth it. The initial scenario is reminiscent of Arifureta‘s, and like a lot of series trying to tread that path it doesn’t seem to understand what made that dungeon escape work.

    Clause of Covenant

Well, the presentation certainly leaves much to be desired with basic text that appears bolded by default even though it isn’t (the actual bolding is a shade brighter) and system information that kind of blends into the dialog at points. If you can look beyond that it’s basically an intermittently amusing absurdist collection of events. Quite heavy on the absurdity; don’t expect any logic here.

  • A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO EVIL & ARE YOU EVEN HUMAN #2

Posted on August 28, 2025 11:34 pm by Offkorn Comment

David Verburg‘s first A Practical Guide to Evil novel is quite good. One particular thing to note about it is that unlike most works based on a Royal Road webnovel, this one’s an extended rewrite rather than a direct transcription. Meaning that the two versions do not match up and you can’t just jump from one to other. Allegedly it’s only the first webnovel volume that’s being expanded this way though and theoretically the second should match up 1-1 with the fourth published novel.

The second of Natalie Maher‘s Are You Even Human novels seems specifically designed to annoy me. The first military-heavy half with the boot camp was aggravating enough, but it was the full switch to the alien perspective that ultimately lost me. It no longer felt like a story… more like a collection of expressed opinions.

Posted on August 20, 2025 9:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

I picked up David Niemitz‘s Guild Mage series after it was advertised in a recent Metaworld Chronicles chapter and saw the author was thankfully not one of those who felt it necessary to shove their genre into their work’s title. Even better, after finishing the first novel it became apparent they were one of the relative few to take advantage of having a full site’s worth of proof readers; the only technical error that stood out was near the very end when the protagonist’s cat was misgendered.

I liked it enough to immediately pre-order the second and then head over to the web novel version because I didn’t feel like waiting.

The series is your classic overpowered protagonist coming-of-age story with some minor romance elements taking place over a slightly longer timeframe than usual, due to the the whole half-elf heritage thing. The first book (the only one currently available in offline form) has her going from peasant to apprentice, the second introduces a wider conflict and brings her into nobility, the third is the seemingly requisite academy arc (thankfully truncated), the fourth the beginning of her rise to true power, and the fifth the acquisition of that power.

Throughout it all I only ended up with two complaints: The romance with the nobleman was handled incredibly badly from multiple angles, and the couple of perspective chapters from the royal antagonists in later volumes are exceptionally uninteresting.

    Applied Cultivation

Despite my usual tendency to avoid cultivation-based stories, I found this one growing on me fairly quickly. I think it’s partly a result of the protagonist being aware of and not beholden to the genre’s tropes and partly the engaging dynamic between him and his (eventual) friends. That said I do feel the dreamscape elements can get rather out of hand.

    BLOOD-STAINED Blade

A pretty good story about an amnesic, evil blood and soul-sucking blade trying to piece together its past and get revenge on those that once sealed it away. Expect lots of bloodshed with an assortment of different wielders alongside the occasional technical error the author refuses to fix for whatever reason.

Snake, Scarab, & Sons: Purveyors of Fine T

For the first twentyish chapters this is a highly entertaining adventure comedy with a style in-line with the author’s previous works. Eventually however dramatic events with the same issue as House of Caroline‘s begin to appear; they lack believability, feeling more like the whims of a fickle god than the result of environmental cause and effect.

SERAPHINA: THE VILLAINESS IS THE VILLAINESS

Starts out rough with a (presumably intentionally) insufferable protagonist. Post-transmigration her attitude ends up less grating due to the high concentration of awfulness in the setting, but the often cartoonishly evil behavior can still be a bit much.

    Heir of the Fog

While well-written with an interesting setting, the spontaneous alien-sourced exposition dump was a deal-killer. Also, although the setup is reminiscent of Rebuild World‘s the transition from starving drifter to AI-enhanced explorer here isn’t nearly as smooth.

    DEATH IS A GIRL

The protagonist has some serious issues with accepting the obvious.

    NEVERMORE: THE ENYGMA FILES

I have no idea if this or good or not, having had to check-out partway through the foreword/prologue when the term ‘Feys’ appeared.
