  • ARCANE AWAKENING #1-4 & MANIFEST DESTINY

With a setup similar to Dead Tired‘s (a wizard emerges from stasis after thousands of years to find that wizards have been replaced by arrogant cultivators), J. Parsons‘ Arcane Awakening/Imperial Wizard series decides to take the premise in a far more serious direction. The protagonist here isn’t all-powerful and the setting leans more toward grimdark, though in general it tries to stay fairly upbeat and has a number of small romance subplots.

The fifth of John Van Stry‘s Wolfhounds novels covers the capture of the last few planets before the siege of the capital, meaning the upcoming sixth will mark the main series’ conclusion (according to the Afterword the author plans on writing a few more books in the same universe). While it mostly consists of political maneuvering, there’s also a decent amount of combat and romantic development.

The third of John Van Stry‘s Wolfhounds novels is much like the first two. There isn’t much ship or mech-based action this time, with the focus instead being on setting all the various plans in motion for the endgame. There are a couple knife fights however and a few rather serious plot developments.

Sarah A. Parker‘s Crystal Bloom series is one I’ve been trying on and off to read since way back after finishing When the Moon Hatched. It’s rough though, focused as it is on an incredibly toxic relationship between two deeply traumatized people… both with a martyr complex. Ultimately I had to give up about halfway through To Snap a Silver Stem when it became clear the change of setting did not herald much of a change in character dynamic.

A human-centric space opera, John Van Stry‘s first two Wolfhounds novels are remarkably proficient at depicting shades of indefensible behavior. There aren’t really any unequivocal ‘good guys’ here, yet the protagonists still manage to be the people you want to win in the end. My only complaint so far is that the romantic development in the first book is quite abrupt.

Suffering a bit from a shaky start, Shattered Dreams is the first of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels. The (minor) issue here is that the protagonist starts out terrible yet does a complete 180 after leaving town. So… why not just have him start out with that decent personality? It wouldn’t have changed anything about the awakening event itself, would’ve made reading through said event far less painful, and avoided any whiplash inducing characterization issues afterward.

Anyway, opening chapter aside the book is a perfectly engaging action-focused zero-to-hero type of story. Particularly notable things at this point would I suppose be the dark undercurrent relating to the protagonist’s skill and the absence of any serious romance elements.
