  • Re:Monster & the Misdeeds of an Extremely Arrogant Villain Aristocrat

Posted on January 22, 2026 2:14 am by Offkorn Comment

Re:Monster is a reincarnation isekai that starts off on a questionably sci-fi Earth before transitioning to what seems to be a standard fantasy world… and I’m not really sure why the beginning is so oddly complex. Maybe the author wrote an earlier unpublished series in that setting? Regardless, the majority of the story is entertaining enough with solid action scenes and plenty of deadpan comedy. The main flaw would be the inclusion of the human women and everything related to them, with the elf situation coming in a more distant second (both being egregious fanservice, albeit of differing severity).

A completely different type of reincarnation isekai, Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou takes the unusual path of having the reincarnator get subsumed by the personality of the body they’ve possessed. The result being more of a fanfiction or ‘what if?’ version of a story than an actual isekai, one populated by a variety of overly excitable/perverted characters. It works surprisingly well.

  • Breaking Up Was the Plan, the Duke Falling For the Villainess “Was Not!” & THE NEW GATE

Posted on January 14, 2026 5:32 am by Offkorn Comment

Ended up having to drop the first Hakyoku Yotei no Akujo no Hazu ga, Reitetsu Koushaku-sama ga Wakarete Kuremasen! novel fairly quickly. The protagonist’s apparent lack of intelligence does not work at all well with the mannerisms she developed from being ‘comically’ poor. It’s a very unfortunate combination.

The New Gate (English subtitle: Where It End, It Begins) doesn’t end up much better, starting off not too dissimilar to what would’ve happened if Kirito from SAO were transported to the world of Leadale after clearing the death game. The main issue here is that I can’t tell if the protagonist is a genuine idiot, or if he’s being written as an idiot solely to provide exposition to the reader… and I don’t care enough to keep reading long enough to find out.

  • HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #4 & I’m Quitting the Hero’s Party #12

Posted on January 7, 2026 5:04 am by Offkorn Comment

The fourth Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken novel has the protagonist going undercover once again to foreign lands in search of normal food only to get foiled by his own lack of assertiveness. It additionally kicks off the conflict against his teacher’s homeland, which should be the last major obstacle toward uniting the continent.

Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida‘s twelfth entry lines up all the pieces for the final push against the various disasters, setting a six-month timeline to take out the first of them (while also revealing that the members of the original hero party were unimaginably stupid). To be honest, at this point I’m more than a little annoyed at how certain enemies keep reappearing… and if the next novel does not feature the Apostate’s complete excision from the story I may end up dropping it.

  • NOWHERE STARS #1-3 & The Abandoned REINCARNATION SAGE #1-2

Posted on December 25, 2025 2:04 pm by Offkorn Comment

A Madoka-like series formatted in the style of a Japanese light novel, Nowhere Stars revolves around horrors both physical and mental from multiple different vectors; personal, familial, societal, eldritch. When it started out the only issues it really had were that the protagonist goes from “I’ll do anything to live” to “No get out, I have to sleep on this” in the blink of an eye, and the harbinger-related scenes occasionally being too wordy. By the end of the third though I did not like how the direction of events seemed to be forcing the protagonist into becoming a celebrity against her core desires.

The Suterareta Tensei Kenja series, whose English publisher can’t seem to decide on a translation for its subtitle (monster’s, monsters, and monsters’ are all used in different places), is basically a mix of Tensura and Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei. The protagonist is a workaholic who can never stop moving like the latter series’ and he’s building a monster town while directly evolving the inhabitants like the former’s, the result being a purestrain overpowered protagonist escapist fantasy with slightly too fast pacing. Oh, and while it should be noted that it currently has no romance elements… based on the highly questionable artwork included I suspect that will eventually change.

  • I’m Quitting the Hero’s Party #11 & The Wicked Princess and Her Twelve Eyes

The first half of the eleventh Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida novel concludes the long-running Kyle/Raniel arc that began in the first (rather than the series as a whole). The second half then picks up after a 3-year timeskip to center on bringing the fight into the demon lord’s territory, with a greater focus on Raniel’s former students.

Aku no Reijou to Juuni no Hitomi (English subtitle: The Legendary Villainess and Her Elite Assassins) has a slightly misleading English title (she’s a duke’s daughter rather than a princess) and starts off with that standard villainess scenario of ‘crown prince fiancé getting stolen by a light magic user’. The twist here though is that there is no twist, with the villainess being actually villainous and wholly guilty of her crimes.

The actual twist is that she gets a second chance anyway and through the power of misunderstandings similar to those found in Monster no Niku (a work by the same author) becomes something resembling a good person. Although the first third is rough, it picks up nicely after that and remains entertaining up to the pair of endings, where a second twist comes out of nowhere.

  • Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint #2 & Who Killed the Hero?: Tale of the Prophecy

Posted on November 27, 2025 1:51 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Jeonjijeok Dokja Sijeom novel is a notable step down from the prequel. The pacing is far, far too frantic, the plot developments are pretty random, and the character actions are simplistic. I see no reason to go any further.

I had been wondering how there could possibly be a continuation of Dare ga Yuusha o Koroshita ka considering the way it ended, and the second novel being mostly a prequel turned out to be the answer. Focused on someone with a tangential relationship to the hero, this story hits many of the same beats while giving a bit of a wider view of what was happening in the world before the demon king fell. And while not quite as good as that first novel, it works well as a supplement.

  • the False Hero #1-2 & How I, A Normal High School Student, Went to Royal Academy and Avoided Being Trapped in Hiatus

Posted on November 7, 2025 1:35 am by Offkorn Comment

Michael Plymel‘s The False Hero series feel like a bit of a mix between Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari and Isekai Walking; it’s got some of the plot beats of the first with the nonsense progression system of the second. Although the first book has the beginnings of what appear to be a slave harem and that terrible skill-acquisition system, which were major red flags, I like overpowered protagonist revenge stories enough that I was willing to to see if the author managed to course-correct in the second novel.

Instead, within the first few chapters, they establish the presence of gamified dungeons in their non-game world, further break the already broken leveling system (free skill points for no reason!), and double-down on the slave harem setup. Pretty much an instant drop.

The first novel in Kal Griffith‘s This Academy Extra series doesn’t have any narrative red flags fortunately, but instead has quite a number of technical issues. Quite a number, ranging from relatively minor things like poor formatting making it hard to tell who’s speaking, to moderate ones like an entire chapter being doubled or inexplicably missing quotation marks, to fairly serious ones like inconsistent chronology and references (e.g. the system messages are referred to as both an AI-like entity and the comments of the Reaper who sent him to this world).

Aside from that, my main complaint is that no good reason is given why exactly anyone would ever care that the in-universe series went on permanent hiatus when its author is clearly and repeatedly called out for being incompetent. Just let it die and continue to follow the (allegedly far better) fanfictions at that point.

  • the SAGA of TANYA THE EVIL #13-14 & I’m Quitting the Hero’s Party #10

Posted on November 6, 2025 2:06 pm by Offkorn Comment

Disappointingly, the two-part arc of the thirteenth and fourteenth Youjo Senki novels is not the series’ conclusion. Worse, the translations have now caught up to the Japanese releases and there’s no continuation in sight. Is the author purposely dragging things out or are they simply stalling due to not having thought of a conclusion? Either case is cause for significant concern.

The tenth Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida novel is absolutely brutal. Whereas other authors might give a timeline for a conclusion and then retcon or extend it, this one seems to have gone in the exact opposite direction and moved everything forward. This novel very much feels like it could be the series’ penultimate, and it hits hard.

The Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida series, in it’s eighth and ninth installments, remains an insanely smooth mixture of action and drama filled with relatable and unique characters. The editing issues are at a minimum here as well while the plotline looks to be moving onto the final stage. Just beautifully done progression all around.

The second Akuma Koujo novel continues along its curiously twisted path. A demonic protagonist who does good things because she just loves how horrible humans are is such an effective twist and it will be interesting to see how/if things change now that there are other demons in the mix.

  • WELCOME TO Olivia’s Magic Jewelers #2 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #3

Posted on September 1, 2025 5:20 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Olivia Maseki Houshokuten e Youkoso novel is half awkward romance, as the love interest spontaneously decides to claw his way out of the friend zone, and half ridiculously forced drama. And then, adding insult to injury there’s actually more food porn than crafting content. It’s just plain bad.

Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken‘s third entry gets our protagonist within a stone’s throw of uniting the continent. Unintentionally of course. As this one doesn’t dwell as much on his internal monologue, it ends up consistently entertaining overall with my only compliant being the re-occurring obsession with eating good food. It’s been like a over a decade since he started eating monsters (and even before that he barely ate anything due to the poisoning attempts) so… why does he still wax rhapsodic about it?
