  • I PARRY EVERYTHING #2 & Dahlia in Bloom #7

Posted on June 3, 2023 12:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

The second Ore wa Subete o Parry suru book completes the storyline the first left incomplete in a ridiculously over-the-top fashion. It just keeps one-upping the power levels with every encounter to the point I just don’t see any reason to keep reading; it’s already gone far beyond what could be considered believable opposing forces and shows no signs of slowing down.

Madougushi Dahlia‘s seventh entry on the other hand sort of goes backwards. While you have the standard massive food focus, what should be the half devoted to magical tool making instead evangelizes heated tables. Why write a fantasy setting if you’re just going to obsess over modern conveniences?

Don’t think I’ll be following either of these series any further.

  • Fierce Heart, War Bound, & My Happy Marriage

Posted on May 31, 2023 10:41 am by Offkorn Comment

Tara Grayce‘s first two Elven Alliance books (Fierce Heart & War Bound) bring to mind the Elves of Lessa series in a few ways. This is a very different series however, with its main couple being surprisingly similar to one another and some rather central event developments that strain credulity.

Personally, I found it odd that both the protagonist and her love interest are so exceptionally considerate and understanding of each other despite having married (for political purposes) at almost literally first sight. Then there’s the whole ‘troll’ situation which doesn’t even remotely make any sense. Combined, these two issues make it rather difficult to drum up any interest in continuing the series.

A book with a similar issue, the first Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon entry also features a weirdly co-considerate pair of protagonists. This one’s problem is more in the subtext however: Our male love interest unilaterally rejects all bride candidates until a girl who acts even more subservient than your average servant shows up. It sort of underhandedly stigmatizes assertiveness.

  • Maiden of the Needle & -MY- SUMMONED Beast is Dead

Posted on May 24, 2023 12:55 am by Offkorn Comment

The first Hariko no Otome novel starts out okayish only to get weird halfway through when an abnormal focus is placed on the protagonist’s appearance. It then gets downright terrible toward the end when sudden dungeon-delving and action take center stage. So, ultimately, I can’t recommended bothering with this mess of a book.

Ore no Shoukanjuu, Shinderu: My summon Pandora. But dead. is also a bit strange in that it feels like it should be a battle shounen manga rather than a light novel. It doesn’t really read like a novel at all, to the point I have to suggest picking up the manga adaptation instead (despite the fact that I despise manga).

  • Only the Villainous Lord Wields the Power to Level Up & Infinite Dendrogram #16

Posted on May 18, 2023 3:28 am by Offkorn Comment

Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai de Akutoku Ryoushu ni Natteita, which has a misleading title since the protagonist is not vicious/villainous in the slightest, perhaps unsurprisingly resembles Akutoku Kizoku no Seizon Senryaku in many ways. The execution here is notably better though with far more consistent character behavior.

The sixteenth Infinite Dendrogram novel is similar to the eleventh in that it’s a flashback focused on a different set of characters. Differences would be which characters are focused on (Hugo and the remaining previously unseen IF guild members in this case) and events taking place around the same time as the ninth book rather than the distant past.

While structurally sound, I didn’t find any of the featured characters here particularly interesting. Making this, for me at least, one of the worse books in the series. I’ll probably wait for the relatively recently released 20th entry to get translated before deciding whether or not to follow the series any further.

  • Housekeeping Mage from Another World #5 & Death’s DAUGHTER and the Ebony BLADE #4

Posted on May 16, 2023 1:33 am by Offkorn Comment

The first two-thirds of Kasei Madoushi no Isekai Seikatsu‘s fifth entry are rather difficult to get through. For some reason the author decided the main plotline here would be idol-centric, which does not fit the setting at all (though to be fair they did make an attempt to camouflage it a bit). The last third however is quite good and provides some major advancements in the main couple’s relationship.

The fourth Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo novel is much like the third in that the battle focus is split between Mekia and Fernest’s forces. This entry mainly seems to be setting things up for the endgame with the upcoming follow-up looking like it will be the calm before the storm.

  • The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #2-3 & Mushoku Tensei #7-22

Posted on May 7, 2023 1:48 am by Offkorn Comment

Despite my earlier misgivings I decided to roll the dice on Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s continuation after all. Remarkably, the very issue I had with the first novel (the protagonist’s odd level of stupidity) was expressly addressed by the author in the second with the third basically staying the course. Makes me wonder if they got similar feedback to that effect during the original release. Regardless, it looks like I’ll be continuing to follow the series for a bit.

Originally I’d avoided reading the Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu series (English subtitle: Jobless Reincarnation) due to concerns that it would have a higher level of perversion than its Anime adaptation (since such adaptations usually tone that part down for a TV audience). As it turns out the fanservice level is pretty much the same, which is to say it’s certainly annoying but not quite at the deal-killing level.

The seventh novel picks up right from where the adaptation left off, making it a good place to jump in, and the author turned out to be pretty adept at storyline pacing. Most of the novels manage to work both as self-contained stories and parts of a greater whole, with only a couple being obviously incomplete (namely #16-17 and #20-21).

So overall it’s a pretty damn good series with the only real issues (aside from the splashes of perversion) being the protagonist’s frequent habit of second-guessing everything and the weird way he frames his anti-Man-God activities as if he’s working for a modern day corporation.

  • I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage #2 & The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind! #1-7

Posted on May 3, 2023 10:08 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Moto Saikyou no Kenshi wa Isekai Mahou ni Akogareru book is a little odd in that it starts out as one thing only to loop back around to the beginning and become something else. That ‘something else’ being the prelude to an Academy storyline. Why? Why would a series that went in a relatively novel direction suddenly about-face into such a generic scenario?

I guess we’ll see how it handles it, but my expectations at this point are pretty low.

An earlier series by the author of Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou!, Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru! is a rather different beast. It’s much wordier (ponderous even at times) with only some of the character relationships and the technicality of the magic system feeling similar.

While I don’t actively dislike it, it takes a bit of effort to work through and doesn’t look like any continuation will appear any time soon. So I’ll be putting the remaining novels in the series on the backburner until a potential tenth is released.

The first Doukutsuou kara Hajimeru Rakuen Life: Bannou no Saikutsu Skill de Saikyou ni!? novel (English subtitle: Climbing to the Top with My Almighty Mining Skills!) is atrocious. There is not a single ounce of rhyme or reason to anything that occurs within it, starting from the very beginning when he’s ostracized for having a rare ability that everyone around actively refuses to research.

It only gets worse from there, as for no discernable reason he immediately begins finding new types ore that just so happen to possess the exact magical ability necessary to solve any issue that may arise. Can’t cast any magic because of a low mana pool? These tunnels are laced with thousands of kilograms of mana-expanding ore! Someone appears with a lifespan-shortening curse? Looks like this island contains ore that both dispels curses and extends your lifespan! It’s infuriating, and you’d probably be better off just reading/watching Isekai Nonbiri Nouka instead.

Kusushi no Majo desuga, Naze ka Fukugyou de Rikon Daikou shiteimasu meanwhile is a pretty standard ‘opposites attract’ semi-romance livened up with irreverent characters and a bit of a twist: The protagonist takes on requests to break off engagements/marriages, only for the couples to end up reconciling instead. It’s pretty fun.

  • The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance a Second Time #1-5 & The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary #8

Posted on April 21, 2023 9:20 am by Offkorn Comment

Nidome no Yuusha wa Fukushuu no Michi o Warai Ayumu is a series in the vein of Tate no Yuusha and Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi, just focused almost entirely on gruesome vengeance with not much in the way of sexual elements. There is a harem situation, but it’s a bit unique in that all the girls are some flavor of yandere.

Issues would be the not quite universal nature of the initial time reset (if others kept their memories it kind of undermines the whole premise), the vast majority of the third novel (which is mostly flashback), overuse of laughter-related onomatopoeia, and the cliffhanger ending of the fifth novel. It goes in an extremely unexpected direction there in one of the worst ways possible. Then again, it certainly hasn’t shied from torturing its protagonists alongside their enemies… so perhaps that isn’t quite as random as it seems.

Either way, it looks like the sixth novel will either make or break the series.

Speaking of cliffhangers, the eighth Kuitsume Youhei novel also happens to end on one, albeit one far less severe. It also feels a lot shorter than previous entries and honestly doesn’t really accomplish/add much of anything.

If the next book continues that trend I’m probably going to end up dropping it.

In the ninth installment, Lv 2 kara Cheat manages to continue balancing its feel-good nature against its couple of problematic relationships. This book’s a bit more focused on the blonde hero’s party than usual but is otherwise more of what you should have come to expect by now from the series.

The seventh Shinja Zero no Megami-sama novel picks up right where the previous one left off and proceeds along at a rather brisk pace. You get a power-up for both the protagonist and Aya, some focus on one of the scattered former classmates, and a bit of political intrigue alongside awkward harem antics.
