  • Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World #9 Canto I-II & From Villainess to Healer

Posted on December 30, 2024 12:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

The tenth and eleventh TRPG Player books are once again a split volume. The focus this time is on bringing down a drug cartel while facing off against a team of assassins, assassins who moonlight as love interests in the second half’s surprisingly sex-centered alternate timeline segment (the first alternate timeline segment features the protagonist as a pirate-hunting privateer). Nothing much to complain about in either half.

Kaifukushoku no Akuyaku Reijou meanwhile is an extremely light-hearted and low-stakes adventure with basically zero believability that looks like it’s going to end up more travelogue than dungeon-crawler. And though the ‘healer’ part of the title is well-represented, you can completely ignore the ‘villainess’ part since the only villain in this story so far is her former fiancé.

  • The Water Magician: The Central Provinces Arc III & Dimension Wave

Posted on December 19, 2024 12:46 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Mizu Zokusei novel is much like the first two. If you enjoyed the banter in those then there’s no reason not to continue on through this one.

Dimension Wave is a story in the vein of Free Life Fantasy, except with a protagonist who’s obsessed with fishing rather than crafting and isn’t (yet) notably overpowered. There isn’t anywhere near as strong a focus on game mechanics either, with it being more ensemble-based with a greater emphasis on character interaction… and fairly strong hints of future harem development.

  • The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind! #8 & Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #8

Posted on December 16, 2024 10:52 am by Offkorn Comment

I picked up this eighth volume of Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru! after seeing the series had finally come off hiatus only to promptly drop it ~15% of the way through after being reminded of everything I didn’t like about it.

Speaking of things I didn’t like, I still have no idea why I keep following Immortal Princess. Somehow despite coming within a hair’s breadth of dropping it at the beginning of the eighth installment, which starts off incredibly randomly, I ended up at the end with an ambivalent “may as well keep reading to see where it goes”. Can’t even begin to explain how that happened.

  • The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #9 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS

Posted on December 8, 2024 5:55 am by Offkorn Comment

After the disappointment of Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan’s eighth novel I wasn’t really expecting anything (besides further disappointment) from the follow-up. Fortunately though it turned out pretty decent and more or less on par with the earlier books. Guess I won’t be dropping the series just yet after all.

Picking up Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken on a whim, I ended up pleasantly surprised that it’s primarily a misunderstanding-based comedy somewhat in the vein of Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai. The protagonist here however isn’t a dissembling coward and it gets quite a bit more graphic in the combat department. That said, the beginning is pretty rough with how he basically gets brow-beaten into adopting his training regime and it doesn’t truly pick up until after he becomes king about a third of the way through.

  • The Otome Heroine’s Fight for Survival #3 & The Former Assassin Who Got Reincarnated as a Noble Girl #2

Posted on December 6, 2024 11:09 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival book goes on a bit of a sidequest to eliminate a village full of orcs before looping around at the end to return to the conflict with Graves, while also setting the stage to pull the protagonist back into the Princess’ orbit. It’s perfectly fine.

Moto Ansatsusha‘s second entry meanwhile unexpectedly introduces harem elements instead of focusing on the established love triangle. Is each book going to feature her attendant and the prince being jealous over a new suiter (whom she doesn’t even realize is attracted to her)? That seems like it will get old fast. Putting that potential issue aside, the only other problem is how weirdly the remaining twin is handled. Flipping from ‘delusional idiot’ to ‘promising assassin’ so quickly makes no sense whatsoever.

  • The Former Assassin Who Got Reincarnated as a Noble Girl & EXP Is Golden

Posted on October 31, 2024 3:14 am by Offkorn Comment

Feeling a bit like Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival, Moto Ansatsusha, Tensei shita Kizoku no Reijou ni Narimashita. mainly centers on how an emotionally stunted reincarnated assassin deals with having a pacifist airhead of a mother and a manipulative idiot for an adoptive sister. Although it also eventually introduces subdued romance elements via a love triangle between her, the somewhat bloodthirsty slave boy she picks up during a mission, and a highly practical prince, which seem like they’re going to be the more long-term focus of the story.

Something like a cross between Free Life Fantasy Online and Overlord, Ougon no Keikenchi (English subtitle: The Queen of Destruction Speedruns Her Ascension) embodies its subtitle fairly well; this is absolutely a speedrun which at times lacks believability (why were endgame-level metal ingots available in the starting area?). Still ends up more entertaining than not though as long as you don’t mind a somewhat anti-social protagonist who mostly talks to themselves about game mechanics.

  • No One Gets Past This GATEKEEPER & Full Clearing Another World #12

Posted on October 22, 2024 11:03 pm by Offkorn Comment

A book much like Yami Healer toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru, Sono Monban Saikyou ni Tsuki (English subtitle: The Unwanted Warrior Guards His New Post) unfortunately is quite a bit more contrived with a completely nonsensical setting and exceptionally forced love interests. It still ends up (barely) readable, but really doesn’t seem to be the kind of series you’d want to follow long term.

The penultimate Shinja Zero no Megami-sama entry mostly concerns itself with re-introducing all the harem members/candidates, although it also includes a rematch with the Dragon King demon lord. After the previous novel I was a bit worried I’d burned out on the series at the cusp of its conclusion, but this one was certainly entertaining enough (aside from the protagonist continuing his impression of a dead fish in romantic encounters).

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #3 & My Magical Career at Court #5

Posted on September 27, 2024 12:10 pm by Offkorn Comment

The third Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei book mostly concerns itself with the recruitment of additional crafters so that, eventually, the protagonist doesn’t have to do everything himself. Aside from that… there’s also a bit of character development for his fiancée.

Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru‘s fifth entry busies itself with the establishment of Luke’s new taskforce and Noel growing into her role as a superior officer. Unfortunately, we once again come to the cusp of romantic progression only to have it snatched away at the very last moment (the novel ends on a cliffhanger). Which is annoying enough that I don’t think I’m going to follow it any further.

  • The Hero Laughs #7 & That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime #19

Posted on September 3, 2024 1:28 pm by Offkorn Comment

The seventh Nidome no Yuusha novel thankfully keeps the incestuous vibes to a minimum. And though we don’t get to reunite with the protagonist’s previous two harem members yet, there is some focus on his former/current girlfriend. Not sure how I feel about the sci-fi-ish deity situation though.

Tensura‘s nineteenth entry is basically two sets of battles with a strategy meeting sandwiched between them. Well really one and a half, since the first is just a continuation of what began in the previous novel. While not terrible, I think it could do with about 60% less mechanic/stat-related exposition… and I’m not really sold on the idea that the author’s going to drag this final confrontation out for three more books.

  • Goodbye, Overtime! & Zilbagias the Demon Prince #2

Posted on August 18, 2024 7:02 am by Offkorn Comment

The first Akuyaku Reijou, Brocon ni Job Change Shimasu novel (English subtitle: This Reincarnated Villainess Is Living for Her New Big Brother) is so forgettable that, despite having read it less than two weeks ago, I remember next to nothing about it. The only thing that stuck with me is how the (centralized, here) unconventionally incestuous romance setup brought to mind Shujinkou ja Nai!.

Fortunately, the series‘ petplay aspects do not get much prominence in the second Zilbagias novel. Unfortunately, the event development has to go through some rather extreme contortions to thread the needle between the actions of a human hero and demon prince… and honestly doesn’t do all that good a job at it. Not thrilled by the ballooning harem either.
