  • The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects & The BEGINNING AFTER the END #1-2

Posted on December 9, 2023 2:51 pm by Offkorn Comment

Another book with an age-gap romance, Ryoumin 0-nin Start no Henkyou Ryoushu-sama doesn’t end up as creepy as Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika o Kouryakuchuu (despite the much larger gap) primarily because the older of the two isn’t actively pursuing it. That issue aside the author seems to be interested in playing around a bit with character tropes, as the princess ends up hostile while the noble 2nd son with a harem turns out to be incredibly altruistic.

Not sure how far you can take a kingdom building series that features a relatively simple-minded protagonist who’s only skilled at combat though. Some sort of advisor will have to be introduced before long.

TurtleMe‘s first two The Beginning After the End novels greatly resemble the start of your average reincarnation isekai light novel. The main twist being that the protagonist is from an urban fantasy version of Earth where only people with exceptional combat ability are allowed to become the king of a nation. Anyway, the first book is perfectly fine if maybe a little rushed. The second though… the second has some issues.

Introducing a steam engine, kicking off an industrial revolution, somehow won’t majorly affect the world? And where exactly did the protagonist learn about the internal workings of steam engines or how to draw technical blueprints for that matter (he was a combat-obsessed orphan in his previous life)? The author seems to have completely lost sight of their own character. The confrontation with the king was also baffling and considering the next book is the start of an academy arc I do not think I’m going to follow it any further.

While it has a number of surprisingly cute romantic comedy segments, the age-gap in Yarinaoshi Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika o Kouryakuchuu ends up impossible to look past due to how often it gets called out. It’s a very weird dynamic, a 16-year old in a 10-year old’s body and a 19-year old with a childish split-personality, that never really manages to rise above awkward. The second book in particular has some issues in that respect.

Also a romantic comedy, Watashi ga Seijo? Iie, Akuyaku Reijou desu! (which has a totally different English title) is basically what you’d get if you condensed the Higeki no Genkyou series down into a single book. Apart from the utterly bizarre vaccination focus in the first half it’s decent enough, just be forewarned that much of the comedy is based on embarrassment and/or misunderstandings.

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE by the Optimistic Lord & Moon Blossom ASURA #2

Posted on November 29, 2023 12:42 am by Offkorn Comment

Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei (English subtitle: ~PRODUCTION MAGIC Turns a Nameless Village into the STRONGEST FORTIFIED CITY~) is, just as its title would suggest, a pretty carefree story. The protagonist has a personality similar to Tensura‘s while the plot developments and general character behavior is over-the-top in a fairly random manner. It’s a fine time-waster, just don’t expect anything from it.

The second Gekka no Shoujo Asura novel is much like the first. Except with a bit more perversion, a bit less action, and an ending partway through its plotline (although admirably not on a cliffhanger). I’ll probably grab the next book to see how the arc concludes… but I’m not sure I’ll go any further than that.

  • Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles #1-20

Posted on November 28, 2023 2:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

Over the course of its first twenty novels, Seirei Gensouki is an overpowered protagonist harem with an intermittent food subfocus that can be essentially broken down into two major arcs.

The first (books 1-15) establishes the protagonist’s early connections and concludes his revenge. There’s little to complain about in this stretch besides an apparent fondness for cliffhanger endings, and the author even shows some restraint in the love interest department by not having his cousin or half-sister fall for him. The second (books 16-20) is much shorter and concerns itself with both the protagonist’s and hero’s awakenings into higher beings.

Frankly the awakening and amnesia plotlines aren’t really doing anything for me and I’m uncertain whether or not I’ll ever read any further. While it’s a decent method to reduce the love interest count to a manageable number, it comes across as exceptionally arbitrary and I highly doubt the amnesia will stick.

  • Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #5 & I’M not the HERO! #2

Posted on November 26, 2023 12:33 pm by Offkorn Comment

The fifth Free Life Fantasy novel wraps up both the island arc and the underworld temple arc. No complaints with how the ‘player home’ concept was implemented.

Shujinkou ja Nai!‘s second entry also doesn’t do anything either particularly noteworthy or annoying. Only odd part is how no one seems weirded out by the flirting between the protagonist and his in-universe sister.

  • If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love & Housekeeping Mage #7

Posted on November 17, 2023 9:36 am by Offkorn Comment

Another variation on the ‘fiancée stolen by a baron’s daughter’ setup, Akuyaku Reijou to Akuyaku Reisoku ga, Deatte Koi ni Ochita nara (massive subtitle omitted) features a nice mix of romance, comedy, and mystery. I’m not sure why the love interest is referred to as a villain though and the prince’s actions come across as exceptionally erratic. Unless he turns out to be a changeling (lot of talk about changelings) I could definitely see some major issues arising from that down the line.

A great deal of plot progression occurs in the seventh Kasei Madoushi no Isekai Seikatsu novel, with the protagonist being forced into coming clean about her origins and Alec resolving to re-join the royal family. Really, at this point all that’s left is to hold the wedding.

When I first saw the listing for Ghoul ga Sekai o Sukutta Koto o Watashi dake ga Shitteiru I mistook it for a Tokyo Ghoul spinoff. And as it happens there is a notable resemblance there, albeit one cut with Goblin Slayer… which is to say it’s pretty dark (rape, gore, body horror). Not sure I want to follow it any further to be honest since event developments seem kind of haphazard.

Generally the best you can hope for from an LN claiming a villainous protagonist is an anti-hero, with them far more often just featuring a normal hero who uses underhanded tactics. Gekka no Shoujo Asura‘s though is shockingly enough an actual villain, an ‘incarnation of malice’ not too dissimilar from what you’d get if Tanya from Youjo Senki happened to be a sadomasochist who loved both war & death. I’m interested to see where it goes despite there being some issues with gratuitous fan service and questionable structuring.

  • Villainous Lord #3 & Mushoku Tensei #25

Posted on October 26, 2023 1:26 pm by Offkorn Comment

Not all that much to say about the third Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai novel. It’s essentially more of the same content, while plotwise we’ve only just reached the game’s starting point. Potential trouble on the horizon would be hints the romance elements may develop into a love triangle or even harem situation… something it definitely does not need.

Speaking of harems, Mushoku Tensei‘s penultimate installment oddly does not deliver a big climatic battle. All the foreshadowing made it out like there was going to be some grand melee and they basically only ended up fighting one guy. Then, as insult to injury, a second guy shows up at the last second to end things on a cliffhanger. Really disappointed in how this series’ conclusion is playing out so far.

The Watashi wa Teki ni Narimasen! series ends up a bit interesting for combining a reincarnation trope with a time loop. Unfortunately it doesn’t really do much else of note, having relatively low stakes, besides have a pretty fun/cute protagonist. Basically it’s the kind of series you can read off and on while doing other things. It’s really not made for binging.

The Lily Clairet series is similar in that respect, being a low-stakes slice of life series focused almost entirely on conversational interplay (one reviewer compared it to Bakemonogatari, and that’s fairly apt). Key things to note would be that it’s a natively English LN with a Japanese setting instead of a translated work, there aren’t actually any romance elements (besides some yuri subtext) until the sixth entry, and the protagonist is a near total doormat who lets everyone walk all over her.

The fifth Shinwa Densetsu novel escalates things by quite a bit. It’s been long hinted that there was something off with the protagonist’s past, and that darkness now appears to be poised to take center stage.

Moving on, it turned out I was right about one book not being enough to wrap up Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo‘s storyline. This sixth novel only manages to conclude the battle with Felix before quickly moving on (in a painfully contrived manner) to confront the death god behind the scenes and end on a double cliffhanger. It doesn’t really engender much enthusiasm for the finale to be honest.

Lastly we come to Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry. This wraps up (the first part of?) the academy arc before launching the protagonist off into the unknown on a new adventure. I seriously hope it never returns to the academy, as while the setting wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t particularly interesting or meaningful either.

  • Min-Maxing My TRPG Build #7 & The Sorcerer’s Receptionist #4

Posted on October 12, 2023 9:45 am by Offkorn Comment

Having finally returned home in the previous novel, TRPG Player’s eighth installment marks the start of the protagonist’s actual journey. All that previously happened was basically just prologue. That doesn’t mean you can skip ahead and start here though, as there are constant references to earlier events and characters.

I mentioned earlier that the third Mahou Sekai no Uketsukejou ni Naritai desu book basically felt like the end of the series and… I still feel that way after having forced my way through the fourth; it doesn’t add anything and happens to be terribly structured besides. Just stick with the first three and pretend this one doesn’t exist.
