  • The Sorcerer’s Receptionist #1-3 & The Emperor’s Lady-in-Waiting Is Wanted as a Bride # 1-4

Mahou Sekai no Uketsukejou ni Naritai desu is a fun romantic comedy that, despite its third novel ending on a fairly conclusive note, decides to keep going anyway. With the main plotline concluded and their relationship free of misunderstandings I’m not really sure where else it can go.

Koutei-tsuki Nyokan wa Hanayome toshite Nozomarechuu is a four book series that’s three books too long. The first novel solves basically every notable issue with the continuations primarily being a procession of manufactured complications, each less believable than the last. That said, the fourth book is the best ending point you could ask for… it’s just that I don’t feel it’s worth wading through all the weirdness of the third to reach.

The first Black Madougushi Guild o Tsuihou sareta Watashi, Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel (English subtitle: Living the Dream After My Nightmare Boss Fired Me from the Mages’ Guild!) turned out to be an incredibly cute action-romance. The central characters are all great and the comedy style works well. That said, I can see the protagonist’s obliviousness to her friend’s romantic intentions becoming an issue if dragged out too long.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s ninth entry introduces us to the last of the major goddesses, shows off the protagonist’s final form, and finally brings the moon priestess into the harem. Lot of other stuff as well. It’s remarkably dense.

While waiting for the twelfth Youjo Senki novel to get translated I happened to notice that there was a rather massive gap between it’s Japanese release date and a potential continuation. Fortunately the thirteenth finally showed up last month so it looks like an indefinite hiatus has been avoided.

Regardless, this one is fairly self-contained and takes place almost entirely in Ildoa. To be honest there doesn’t seem to be much point to it as the action seems set to return right back to the Eastern front. Conquest for conquest’s sake which… may actually have been the point. Not sure if I’m going to jump right into the follow-up when/if it’s translated or wait several years until the next arc is complete before grabbing all of them at once.

I’d previously had misgivings about the direction the sixth Nidome no Yuusha book was heading. Fortunately, for the most part, it manages to pull the gamble off. There are certainly some issues with the sci-fi elements and I’m not thrilled by the sibling complex but all-in-all it ends up a solid continuation.

I find myself morbidly fascinated about where exactly a harem composed entirely of yanderes will end up. I certainly don’t see any sort of happy ending in the cards.

The second Nise Seijo book is much like the first. No particular surprises here beyond that it looks like the next entry will cover the last parts of the game’s timeline… potentially being the series’ conclusion.

Maseki Gourmet‘s second novel is also more of the same. That’s most definitely not a positive in this case however, and the character interactions in particular are just purestrain cringe to the point I don’t see any reason to follow it further.

  • A Wild Last Boss Appeared! #1-3 & Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter #9

Posted on September 15, 2023 9:30 am by Offkorn Comment

The Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta! series is sort of in the middleground between Leadale and Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da!. It’s got a more legible writing style than the former without any of the problematic fetishes of the latter.

Sadly it trips up where the protagonist is concerned. Despite having partially merged with their character’s personality (an unapologetic warlord), they’re painfully confrontation-adverse to the point of exasperation. It ends up a total waste of the overpowered trope.

Also on the dropped list, with the release of it’s ninth entry, is Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi. The breathless fawning has just gotten to be too much and the author is apparently utterly incapable of reigning in the number of love interests.

  • MODERN Villainess #1-3 & Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #4

Posted on September 7, 2023 12:50 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Gendai Shakai de Otome Game no Akuyaku Reijou o Suru no wa Chotto Taihen series (English subtitle: It’s Not Easy Building a Corporate Empire Before the Crash) is primarily economics porn. You’ll see the phrase “bad debt” quite often and be subjected to seemingly unending financial mechanics and fake newspaper articles. Secondary to that are the school life elements, which are horrid (a grown woman pretending to be a kindergartener is just…), with the otome game aspects coming in far last.

While superficially about the protagonist’s efforts to prevent her future ruination, it’s really more about how ‘no good deed goes unpunished’ with every action she takes to try to save the economy getting opposed by various levels of opposing greed, incompetence, or just flat-out patronization. Which is to say she’s more of a hero than a villain.

Covering the first half of a ‘survival’ arc, the fourth Free Life Fantasy novel is basically identical to previous entries. Ending halfway through the event doesn’t even end up a negative since the storyline, such as it is, has always been tertiary.

  • THE MOST HERETICAL LAST BOSS QUEEN #1-3 & The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess

Posted on September 5, 2023 11:48 am by Offkorn Comment

Starting off a bit like Nise Seijo, Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu. (English subtitle: FROM VILLAINESS TO SAVIOR) quickly goes in a more standard otome game direction focused on drama and romance with frequent comedic relief.

As far as genre goes there’s no issue since all the various elements are blended together well. No, the issues lie with the protagonist (who’s something of a ditz) and the writing style (heavy on repetition). She’ll fret about troublesome upcoming game events… then go out of her way to encounter them, change how they play out… then act shocked when future events deviate from the game’s, deliberately trigger all of someone’s romance flags… only to be perplexed when he falls in love with her instead of her sister. It’s exasperating.

The first Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon book is a bait and switch, starting off as a perverted comedy only to swerve straight into heavy drama for the second half. I ended up liking neither incarnation; the perversion level is much too high in the comedic half while the antagonist of the dramatic half is one of the worse archetypes (blames everyone for their problems except the person actually responsible).

  • Fake Saint of the YEAR & Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon

Posted on September 2, 2023 4:33 am by Offkorn Comment

The first Nise Seijo book (English subtitle: You Wanted the Perfect Saint? Too Bad!) turned out far better than its synopsis would indicate. The reaction comedy is on-point, it’s not laden with fanservice, and there’s a nice mix of the protagonist’s actions backfiring in both expected and unexpected ways. Glad I decided to give it a chance after initially dismissing it.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Mugen Gacha (massive title omitted). It is every bit as bad as its synopsis would suggest. This book is purestrain self-insert wish fulfillment in its lowest and most half-assed form: Little rhyme or reason to event developments, every single side character fawning over the protagonist like Diablo from Tensura, and zero justification for his instantaneous transformation from wimp to merciless incarnation of vengeance.

  • Hollow Regalia #2 & Let This Grieving Soul Retire! #1-2

Posted on August 31, 2023 10:56 am by Offkorn Comment

Looks like I’ll be dropping Utsuro naru Regalia with this second entry. I’ve had my fill of naïve bleeding heart ‘heroes of justice’ who can’t understand the consequences of their actions… and certainly don’t want to read about one as the main heroine.

Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai ~Saijaku Hunter ni Yoru Saikyou Party Ikuseijutsu~ is a series in the same vein as Kage no Jitsuryokusha, with key differences being that the protagonist is relatively weak instead of overpowered and highly values his party members and clanmates instead of constantly dismissing them. My only complaint so far is regarding the rather frequent “I want to barf” statements, which thankfully fall off a bit in the second novel.

  • Mushoku Tensei #24 & I’M not the HERO!

Posted on August 25, 2023 3:33 am by Offkorn Comment

As expected the twenty-fourth Mushoku Tensei entry mostly focuses on setting the stage for the final battle. Although it does feature a remarkably effective pre-emptive attack toward the end that makes you wonder just what the point of all that earlier build-up was.

The Shujinkou ja Nai! series is another ‘reincarnated into a game world’ type of story with the odd distinction of having a protagonist who insists he’s not one despite the world doing everything in its power to mark him as such. It’s a vaguely interesting setup whose overall entertainment value will lie in how he ends up reacting to later events. Also perhaps of note is that while it doesn’t currently have any romance elements, there are hints it may advance in an unconventional pseudo-incest direction; the sister of the person our reincarnated protagonist has become has a brother complex despite knowing he’s been possessed by an outsider.
