{"id":14009,"date":"2026-05-30T22:56:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T22:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/?p=14009"},"modified":"2026-05-31T15:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T15:32:16","slug":"the-legend-of-william-oh-the-inheritance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/the-legend-of-william-oh-the-inheritance\/","title":{"rendered":"The LEGEND of WILLIAM OH &#038; THE INHERITANCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I first heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Macronomicon\/e\/B07FSFX2KZ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Macronomicon<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0GMQTXXCZ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Legend of William Oh series<\/a> at the conclusion of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/lever-action-industrial-strength-magic\/\" title=\"LEVER ACTION &#038; INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH MAGIC\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Industrial Strength Magic webnovel<\/a>. Initially dismissing it because the description didn&#8217;t seem like something I&#8217;d like, tower climbing not being fundamentally different from dungeon diving, eventually I decided to give it a chance when the second published novel appeared in my recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The main thing that stood out is that it has a very similar atmosphere to that earlier series, with the key differences being the setting and a greater level of quippy-ness in exchange for barely-there romantic elements that pretty much never rise above a tertiary focus. The character interactions are what carry it and they do so through that second novel well enough that I continued straight on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalroad.com\/fiction\/92144\/the-legend-of-william-oh\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the web novel version<\/a>. Unfortunately it didn&#8217;t take all that long to hit a snag; the zombie apocalypse floor is absolutely terrible and marked the beginning of the end for me. After that point it also introduces an incredibly dumb paladin nemesis, and I had to drop it after the protagonist somehow gets knocked out in battle against him despite being exponentially more powerful than the first time they fought.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been leery of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ilona-Andrews\/e\/B001RXSCKY\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ilona Andrews<\/a>&#8216; novels after the massive disappointment of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/magic-binds-assorted-short-stories-the-turn\/\" title=\"Magic Binds, Assorted Short Stories, &#038; The Turn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;last&#8217; Kate Daniels entry<\/a> and so initially didn&#8217;t give their newer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0FM2FDV7D\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breach Wars series<\/a> much thought. As it turns out, the first novel is something of a riff on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/solo-leveling-1-5\/\" title=\"Solo Leveling #1-5\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Na Honjaman Level-Up<\/a> (minus the System aspects) with a touch of <em>Kate Daniels<\/em> flair.
