{"id":6054,"date":"2018-12-06T11:51:25","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T11:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/?p=6054"},"modified":"2020-08-20T05:33:57","modified_gmt":"2020-08-20T05:33:57","slug":"shadows-awakening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/shadows-awakening\/","title":{"rendered":"ShadowS: AWAKENING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can see now why people would be angry with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gog.com\/game\/shadows_heretic_kingdoms\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms<\/a> (the sequel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/heretic-kingdoms-the-inquisition-hand-of-fate\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kult: Heretic Kingdoms<\/a>), considering how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gog.com\/game\/shadows_awakening\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">remade\/extended version<\/a> itself isn&#8217;t exactly a stellar gaming experience.<\/p>\n<p><em>Awakening<\/em> is an incredibly gimmicky <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torchlight_II\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Torchlight<\/a>-like kind of game. Not only does it wholly revolve around a gimmick (swapping between the real\/shadow versions of each map), but most of the boss fights involve some sort of annoying scripted behavior, there&#8217;s a few inexplicable backtrack-heavy sections, a couple potential party members spontaneously become unavailable depending on your choices, and its chock-full of busywork puzzles and forced party-swapping.<\/p>\n<p>On the technical front things could also use a bit of work since both movement (left-click to move) and attacking (also left-click to attack) lack precision. It seems stable enough though and I didn&#8217;t run into any crashes or slowdown on my first playthrough. So that&#8217;s nice. Also nice is that a cheap Respec option&#8217;s available and healing&#8217;s easy to come by.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the optional DLC go, I haven&#8217;t bothered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gog.com\/game\/shadows_awakening_legendary_armory_pack\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Armor<\/a> (if you&#8217;re playing on Normal you definitely won&#8217;t need it), but did pick up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gog.com\/game\/shadows_awakening_the_chromaton_chronicles\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Golem party member<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>While I would&#8217;ve rather had another mage option (since 3\/4 of the current ones are missable), it&#8217;s a pretty solid addition to the early-game party makeup. Being the same type of fighter as Carissa (who&#8217;s amazing) though it&#8217;ll lose most of its usefulness once she finally joins unless you want to try comboing it with the lizard shaman.
