{"id":7949,"date":"2020-03-23T09:33:21","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T09:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/?p=7949"},"modified":"2020-08-22T10:43:05","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T10:43:05","slug":"altered-carbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/altered-carbon\/","title":{"rendered":"ALTERED CARBON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first season of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altered_Carbon_(TV_series)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">this series<\/a> starts off great, only to noticeably deteriorate about halfway through when it does that thing &#8216;prestige&#8217; television seems so fond of: Pull out a plot twist that completely changes the show&#8217;s focus\/themes. I&#8217;d still say it&#8217;s worth watching, lot of similarities to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blade_Runner_(franchise)#Blade_Runner_2049_(2017)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bladerunner<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/random-movies-tv-shows\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Expanse<\/a>, and even a bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Fifth_Element\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fifth Element<\/a> (probably some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westworld_(TV_series)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Westworld<\/a> there too&#8230; but I haven&#8217;t seen that), it&#8217;s just that it ends up merely watchable instead of a must see.<\/p>\n<p>Fitting in between the first and second seasons is <a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/40613\/Altered_Carbon__Resleeved\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an Anime movie<\/a>. It&#8217;s a side story (meaning it can be watched as a stand alone or completely ignored) done in what appears to be a cell-shaded 3DCGI style, and I would not suggest watching it as an extension of the series since it reminds me of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/souten-no-ken-regenesis\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Souten no Ken Regenesis<\/a> more than any sci-fi work (except perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">GitS<\/a>). What is it with shows featuring inexplicable ninja armies? Am I just unlucky?<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the second season, which is quite a bit different from the first&#8230; and not only because the actor playing the MC has changed (one &#8216;benefit&#8217; of having a setting centered on body swapping is the ability to shuffle performers at will). While that&#8217;s more of a conspiracy drama this instead focuses on an amnesia-themed and somewhat aimless personal quest, trading the police\/detective elements for military\/political ones.
