{"id":8522,"date":"2020-09-23T05:37:45","date_gmt":"2020-09-23T05:37:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/?p=8522"},"modified":"2020-09-25T00:54:54","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T00:54:54","slug":"sword-art-online-alicization-war-of-underworld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/sword-art-online-alicization-war-of-underworld\/","title":{"rendered":"Sword Art Online: Alicization &#038; War of Underworld"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a great many problems with the <a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/36474\/Sword_Art_Online__Alicization\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">three<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/39597\/Sword_Art_Online__Alicization_-_War_of_Underworld\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">part<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/40540\/Sword_Art_Online__Alicization_-_War_of_Underworld_2nd_Season\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sequel<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offkorn.com\/blog\/gekijouban-sword-art-online-ordinal-scale\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">SAO Ordinal Scale<\/a> movie.<\/p>\n<p>The central one is the ill-conceived fusion of the sci-fi modern day plotline and Underworld&#8217;s essentially stand-alone fantasy plotline. The two never had any reason to mix. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assassin%27s_Creed\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/a> does something similar, and the criticisms about the way that franchise mixes its past\/present settings hold doubly true here since Underworld is effectively self-contained as opposed to being a reflection. The author could have easily wrote Alice and Eugeo&#8217;s story as its own thing with no association whatsoever to Kirito&#8217;s group and ended up with a far more consistent and immersive product.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty much all of the remaining issues can be tied back to Kirito&#8217;s involvement with the story; spontaneous power-ups, random cameo appearances, last minute saves, questionable character motivation, harem elements, and bizarre plot twists all. Really, the only flaw that can truly be called its own is the re-occurring theme of using psychosexual megalomaniacs as main villains.<\/p>\n<p>Vaguely related to all of that in a &#8216;you can probably watch this if you&#8217;re a fan of the genre&#8217; sense are the series <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smile_Down_the_Runway\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Runway de Warrette<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Connect!_Re:Dive\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Princess Connect! ReDive<\/a>.
