Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da!<\/a> (English subtitle: Advent of the Wyrm<\/em>) is an odd book in that both its synopsis and title are extremely misleading. This is very much a bait-and-switch… though one for the better I’d say. Instead of following around an awkward genderswapped gamer, you get treated to the whims of a manic pixie dragongirl (who was formerly some guy’s roleplay character) as she explores the new world she’s found herself in while decimating any who oppose her.<\/p>\n

It does, however, have what’s likely to be a fatal flaw: The child she makes into a soulbound servant for ~reasons~ is being positioned to become the primary love interest. And this isn’t “an adult in the body of child” mind you, but an actual child. Needless to say that’s going to be a deal-killer for quite a few people, myself included the moment it passes beyond ‘misunderstandings’ and innuendo.<\/p>\n

Ihoujin, Dungeon ni Moguru<\/a> is also misleading, but for a different reason (the title is accurate enough). What we have here appears to be a slice of life cooking shounen disguised with elements of GATE<\/a> and DanMachi<\/a>. It really does seem like most LN authors are just failed restauranteurs at this point.<\/p>\n

Oddly enough, the side characters and worldbuilding are almost<\/em> interesting\/entertaining enough to offset the unexpected focus. In the end the problem mainly comes down to the protagonist’s incredibly inconsistent characterization. The author can’t seem to decide if he should be an awkward teenager in over his head or a mature, hyper-competent former mercenary… which results in his personality flip-flopping between the two seemingly at random.
