  • Thirteenth Child Trilogy & Elise Kova

Posted on March 27, 2019 5:44 am by Offkorn Comment

Patricia C. Wrede‘s Thirteenth Child trilogy is a very slow burn; don’t go into it expecting a hero’s journey. Instead it’s closer to an alternative history slice of life series, with each book being ~90% focused on the protagonist’s daily interactions/activities and only the last chapter or two providing an opportunity for her to do something that catches everyone’s attention. There are also a number of loose ends relating to the world’s metaphysics and the tendency for a chapter to end with a dire proclamation only to have nothing come of it in the next is a consistent annoyance. Yet despite all that there’s just something about Wrede’s dialog style that makes the journey entertaining enough to forgive the open-ended and somewhat anti-climatic conclusion.

Elise Kova’s Golden Guard trilogy is less a trilogy and more a loose collection of short stories. The first is a bit of an action-mystery, but besides that is hard to pin down. The second is a painfully generic paranormal romance story minus the paranormal. The third is something of a buddy comedy. All three together are about the size of one normal book and honestly I can’t recommended bothering with them since they add nothing to the sequel.

That sequel being her previously published Air Awakens series. Interestingly enough the genre here is different from all three of the short stories mentioned above, with this being something of a combination hero’s journey paranormal romance. It starts out slow, picks up in the second book, begins to fall apart in the third, completely falls apart in the fourth, and takes a hard turn into pitch black tragedy in the the fifth: Human mutation, cannibalism, incest, miscarriage, and mental corruption/degradation all make an appearance. Ultimately I can’t recommended this series either due to all the inconsistencies surrounding the protagonist.

Unrelated to the the two works above (though almost immediately recognizable as from the same author due to the fondness for using names over pronouns), Kova’s Loom Saga is a relatively straightforward paranormal romance story for the most part which quickly brought to mind Lilith Saintcrow’s Dante Valentine series. This series leans more toward steampunk instead of cyberpunk though and takes place in its own fantasy world. While the first book is pretty good and the second is decent, the third comes across as very unfocused and almost offhanded in how everything gets resolved; what ends up most interesting about it is how Arianna ends up ceding the protagonist spot to Florence.

In a time of great strife, three heroes shall be entrusted with the souls of the three great sovereigns who created the world in order to bring light to the darkness which has engulfed the land. That time is now.

A warfare-centric action series with a moderate amount of comic relief and a few dramatic elements. It’s a retelling of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with the cast represented by miniature Gundams.

Following France’s defeat at Azincourt, the knight’s academy the aspiring alchemist Montmorency was attending is shuttered and one of his close friends end up captured. Desperate for power he manages to summon the fairy queen Astarot, who agrees to provide the knowledge necessary to become the protector he’s always wished to be. However… Montmorency has little talent for alchemy, and ends up having to rely upon a young village girl he stumbles across one morning to wield the power he’s unable to.

    An ecchi-heavy mixed genre series.

Desperate for money and panning for gold in the wilderness, Saichi Sugimoto hears the tale of a hidden stockpile of Ainu treasure. With no better prospects he decides to try his luck at finding it, assisted by both his soldier’s training and a young Ainu girl he meets along the way.

A graphic, hunting-themed action series with frequent food-related scenes and an initially moderate level of comic relief which grows higher as the show progresses.

  • Souten no Ken -REGENESIS-

Posted on December 25, 2018 10:10 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

Although Lu-Ying is safe and the Red Flower Gang has been defeated, World War II is on the horizon and the Japanese army is making moves to wipe out gang activity by employing martial artists of their own. Worse, the German army is in Shanghai as well looking to secure the List of Hope which Guise had intended to use in the creation of a sanctuary city.

An action series threaded with various types of comic relief. Though a sequel to Souten no Ken, the storyline here is almost entirely self-contained with little relation to previous events.

Returning to Earth after the events on Rakuyou, Gintoki and the gang discover that the planet has become ground-zero for an intergalactic war over the energy reserves Utsuro has been controlling. Once again Edo is under alien rule and it falls to the Yorozuya and their allies to free the city and stop Utsuro once and for all.

Continues from where Rakuyou Kessen Hen left off with the same genre variety. Though it begins with a brief recap there’s little point in watching it without having seen most of the earlier entries in the franchise, starting from at least Gintama’.

While not always dealing with world-ending threats, where the three members of Yorozuya are concerned even normal everyday events such as going out for ramen can result in mass destruction or alien invasion.

A collection of primarily comedic stories which occur during the first half of Gintama°. For the most part they can be watched even by those unfamiliar with the series.

After all that’s happened with the government, Gintoki has been forced to leave the Kabuki district and lay low in Akiba with Katsura’s rebels. Utsuro is still out there though and Shouyou’s former students must now band together despite their differences to have any hope of defeating him.

A continuation of Gintama° with the same multi-genre style of mixed battle shounen and comedy elements. It’s heavily plot-driven and won’t make any sense if you’re not already familiar with the characters’ histories.

The girls working in Edo‘s red light district are expected to be able to like, or at least pretend to like, every type of man. For those who can’t manage it however there exists a certain incense which will cause anyone who breathes it in to instantly fall in love with the next person they see… a substance which is both easy to abuse and can lead to all manner of awkward situations.

A Gintama° side-story focused on romantic comedy and dirty jokes.

With fire being a common hazard in Edo, residents often choose to rent furniture, clothing, or decorations instead of buying them outright. Okou and Seiji run one such lending shop which has developed a reputation for being uncommonly experienced with matters involving tsukumogami.

A partly episodic period drama with slight romance, mystery, and educational elements alongside a large amount of comic relief.
