  • ANTECEDENTS’ LEGACY & Villainess’s Redemption

Posted on August 1, 2026 6:42 am by Offkorn Comment

Daniel Schinhofen‘s first Antecedents’ Legacy novel turned out quite different from the other two series of their’s I’ve read. What mainly stands out, in a bad way, is the protagonist’s pronounced horniness alongside the poorly thought-out setting. Moving in combat is lost-tech? Seriously?

The first of Vanessa Rhoswen‘s Reborn Villainess novels starts out rough due the cartoonishness of the villainy on display. Although events then pick up nicely for a time post-regression, it unfortunately soon becomes clear that the protagonist is an idiot. She keeps talking about how she’s a master schemer despite her future schemes having failed miserably and having only managed to destroy her own family (unintentionally). The ‘let’s pretend to faint instead of doing literally anything else’ scene where she ends up concussing herself was one straw too many.

  • The Transmigrated Side Character & Sixteen Ladies Enter the Palace

Posted on July 18, 2026 1:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The Transmigrated Side Character (subtitle: She Was Written to Shine Someone Else’s Light – He Had Other Plans) is a fairly entertaining little romance novella. Main issues would be that the setup feels completely unnatural, no reasons are given for why the protagonist acts as she does nor how she got there, and the events in the second half are pretty rushed.

D Abraham‘s first The Transmigrated Villainess Doesn’t Want The Crown Princess’s Position novel is a curious mix of disparate elements; Chinese palace drama, English period piece, and Japanese light novel. Somehow this combination manages to work despite the fact that it really, really shouldn’t. I think it’s mainly because the focus is more on the characters than the setting, which would would explain why I quickly started to lose interest in the second half as the frequency of rather unbelievable events picked up speed.

  • The Honor of Duty & Wings of LIFE

Posted on May 30, 2026 1:56 pm by Offkorn Comment

Defying my expectations, rather than a conventional male-led harem A.R. Rend‘s The Honor of Duty turned out more like a genderswapped female-lead harem… although it’s not a simple relabeling and some effort was expended so that the women still have feminine traits while the men still have masculine ones. The result is a mix of both interesting and awkward aspects with, for me at least, the latter outweighing the former by the end.

Meghan Le Fay‘s first Dragonbound Chronicles novel starts out like it’s going to be a standard ‘enemies to lovers’ kind of thing and then unfurls in a very different direction. While for the most part it’s quite good, good enough that I could even forgive the questionable communication issues and ludicrous mistaken identity subplot, the utterly bizarre twist toward the end with the attacking army completely extinguished any interest in following it further.

  • MAGICAL GIRL MECHANICAL HEART #2 & AWAKEN ONLINE #1-9

Posted on February 10, 2026 11:26 am by Offkorn Comment

Natalie Maher‘s second Magical Girl Mechanical Heart novel is a mostly seamless, if initially less dark, continuation of the prequel. I’m not thrilled about the ending confrontation though, which comes across as rather abrupt and features a lengthy combat sequence besides. Throwing all that character development away feels like such a massive waste.

Travis Bagwell‘s Awaken Online series brings to mind a villainous protagonist version of Infinite Dendogram with a greater focus on events outside the game world. And like that series this one also has sidestory novels told from the perspective of a different character mixed into the main series.

Despite what it may look like at the beginning this is not really an overpowered protagonist series, but instead closer to a strategic MC series with battle shounen elements. Most of the time is spent on either training or working through some sort of seemingly overwhelming problem, with the rest focused on how successful the protagonist’s plans/gambles turn out (often as a result of a last minute power-up/development). The series’ main flaw is that every so often the level of believability will just drop straight through the floor, and I ended up deciding to not continue on into the tenth novel specifically due to how the eighth’s ending brought to mind SAO: Alicization‘s (although the descriptions for those later novels also played a part).

As for the sidestories, the third novel focuses on Riley and is easily the weakest of the bunch (to the point I’d suggest completely ignoring it if it weren’t referenced so much). The beginning and end are decent enough, but the vast majority of the questing in the mage city is just incredibly dull/annoying. The next is the fifth novel, which is fantastic but should absolutely be read before the fourth, as being already familiar with Eliza and the water god greatly enhances event development. The seventh and ninth books are the next to focus on sidestories and both end up solid, the former featuring Frank and the latter a mostly new set of characters who apparently become relevant in the tenth novel.

There’s also a sidestory trilogy laying out the antagonist from the eighth book’s backstory, but I originally ignored it because after finishing the third my patience with cultivator-like fire mages had worn out. Then, after reading that eighth novel, the reasoning evolved into simply having no interest whatsoever in that character nor anything related to him.

  • Breaking Up Was the Plan, the Duke Falling For the Villainess “Was Not!” & THE NEW GATE

Posted on January 14, 2026 5:32 am by Offkorn Comment

Ended up having to drop the first Hakyoku Yotei no Akujo no Hazu ga, Reitetsu Koushaku-sama ga Wakarete Kuremasen! novel fairly quickly. The protagonist’s apparent lack of intelligence does not work at all well with the mannerisms she developed from being ‘comically’ poor. It’s a very unfortunate combination.

The New Gate (English subtitle: Where It End, It Begins) doesn’t end up much better, starting off not too dissimilar to what would’ve happened if Kirito from SAO were transported to the world of Leadale after clearing the death game. The main issue here is that I can’t tell if the protagonist is a genuine idiot, or if he’s being written as an idiot solely to provide exposition to the reader… and I don’t care enough to keep reading long enough to find out.

  • The Seven Rings & AUGMENTED ASPECTS: ROYAL BLOOD

Posted on December 8, 2025 6:22 pm by Offkorn Comment

The conclusion to Nora Roberts‘ Lost Bride trilogy is much like the previous two books. Overall I’d have to say this is far more a romance than a mystery series, as the actual mystery is resolved pretty quickly (through brute force) in the last third. To the point I feel the witch wasn’t even necessary; her role could’ve theoretically been handled by a more competent version of the protagonist’s ex-fiancé.

The second Augmented Aspects novel expands on the first remarkably well despite going off in what seems like a fairly random direction. Rogue/Healer is an exceedingly rare character archetype after all. It is not without its problems though, some more serious than others. Less serious ones being the description being misleading and there being an assortment of minor technical issues, while the most serious is a pretty large plot hole.

In the last part of the novel it’s stated that her magical beacon flaw (sensible) and green eyes (utter nonsense) are present in all of her doppelganger forms. Which if true would’ve made it impossible for her to have taken the place of the local Mage Guild Master, let alone continue to impersonate him. How the web novel readers didn’t catch this, nevermind a professional editor, is baffling.

  • Limitless Path & Moonrise: Rise of the Bloodmoon Witch

Posted on November 8, 2025 3:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

Garrett Byers‘ first Limitless Path novel reminds me of Primer for the Apocalypse. I like how most people are pretty chill about the whole system integration thing and both the characters and their interactions are entertaining. The main issues would be that the high level of acceptance isn’t actually all that believable, the romance comes out of nowhere and advances at a blistering pace, and it’s extremely strange that none of these girls appear to have any friends.

Still, I greatly enjoyed it and continued on to the web novel version only to find that the author promptly squandered all their forward momentum with thirty or so chapters, roughly half a book’s worth, of training and inexplicable crafting segments. Almost worse is that they’re followed up by the protagonist immediately going out to solo-clear dungeons again instead of letting her sisters or girlfriend fully catch up. This isn’t Na Honjaman Level-Up where there’s no one she can trust, nor Ultimate Level 1 where she’s on a deadline with a god hunting her; there’s no excuse to justify that action (especially considering the baffling decision to spend weeks learning blacksmithing).

Chad Maske‘s first Rise of the Bloodmoon Witch novel is shockingly good… although perhaps it would’ve been less so if I hadn’t been avoiding their Ashes of My Many Lives series. Regardless, it’s quite good with a complex setting, and a flawed, struggling, yet still technically overpowered protagonist. It’s particularly interesting that the roommate actually looks like she’ll remain a roommate instead of becoming a love interest in the way this kind of paranormal romance story usually likes to go.

  • THE WHITE MAGE #3 & Privateer’s CommissioN #2

Posted on October 16, 2025 8:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

Although the third of Argus Philo & Montgomery Quinn‘s The White Mage novels does include a conclusion… the series would’ve been far better off concluded at the end of the second with there being no mention of a lich. Basically all this book offers is a large collection of lesbian-adjacent sex scenes.

As suspected, the second of Randi Darren‘s Privateer’s Commission novels goes all-in on the harem elements. Fortunately this does not detract much from events as a whole and the protagonist’s slight detachment from everything going on around him remains entertaining. So while I could certainly do with less heavy-handed flirting the setting and background developments remain interesting enough to pick up any continuation.

    Terminal Fleet

An interesting sci-fi series that’s kind of a cross between Cyperpunk and Warhammer 40k. It starts off quite good only to degrade a bit with the whole infiltration plotline; there’s already a story there with the romance and new job, you don’t need incongruously personal world-ending stakes on top of that.

    REVOLVER CHRONICLES

While I’m not a fan of the Dark Souls mechanics that have been hamfisted into the combat scenes, or any game mechanics really, the author clearly both has a detailed vision and executes it competently.

    Princess of the Void

A remarkably good sci-fi paranormal romance series which, curiously, feels a little like Risou no Himo Seikatsu. Although I enjoyed the first book for the most part, ultimately all the drama around the relationship dynamic comes across as manufactured semantics.

    Swan Song

First thing to note about this is the unusual prose; there are fairly frequent odd turns of phrase scattered about. That aside the beginning is pretty interesting, if a bit disjointed… but unfortunately the complete 180 on the day before his execution is brutal.

    Throne of Gods

The events here lack grounding. Things seem to happen only because the story needs them to, with the characters’ actions feeling particularly abnormal.

  • WELCOME TO Olivia’s Magic Jewelers #2 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #3

Posted on September 1, 2025 5:20 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Olivia Maseki Houshokuten e Youkoso novel is half awkward romance, as the love interest spontaneously decides to claw his way out of the friend zone, and half ridiculously forced drama. And then, adding insult to injury there’s actually more food porn than crafting content. It’s just plain bad.

Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken‘s third entry gets our protagonist within a stone’s throw of uniting the continent. Unintentionally of course. As this one doesn’t dwell as much on his internal monologue, it ends up consistently entertaining overall with my only compliant being the re-occurring obsession with eating good food. It’s been like a over a decade since he started eating monsters (and even before that he barely ate anything due to the poisoning attempts) so… why does he still wax rhapsodic about it?
