  • I GOT REINCARNATED AS A CULTIST MOB IN AN EROGE FULL OF MANIACS with Death wishes & VENUS MISSION #2

Posted on August 15, 2026 12:45 pm by Offkorn Comment

Zenin Kakugo Gangimari na Eroge no Jakyouto Mob ni Tensei shiteshimatta Ken has the same issue as Isekai Goumon-hime with events being difficult to relate to as a result of the craziness of the setting, albeit to a notably lesser degree. More of a personal issue is that the love interest is ‘clown-scary’, which is not a variety of yandere that appeals to me at all.

The second Venus Mission novel starts out on par with the first and remains a decent enough read (continued formatting issues aside) up until the sudden kaiju appearance near the end. Things quickly go downhill at that point and I’ve no desire to follow the series further.

  • Witch and Mercenary #6 & Torture Princess #2

Posted on August 8, 2026 11:47 am by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Majo to Youhei volume is split into two books, a bizarre practice some authors insist on despite how pointless and annoying it is to muck up the numbering that way. That issue aside both halves are perfectly fine and provide a bit more information about witches and why they tend to behave as they do.

I bought the second Isekai Goumon-hime novel way back after finishing the first and just… never got around to reading it. While I would not say the series is bad, there’s just something off about it. A general sense of incredulity that makes it difficult to form an attachment to the characters or events.

  • The Transmigrated Side Character & Sixteen Ladies Enter the Palace

Posted on July 18, 2026 1:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The Transmigrated Side Character (subtitle: She Was Written to Shine Someone Else’s Light – He Had Other Plans) is a fairly entertaining little romance novella. Main issues would be that the setup feels completely unnatural, no reasons are given for why the protagonist acts as she does nor how she got there, and the events in the second half are pretty rushed.

D Abraham‘s first The Transmigrated Villainess Doesn’t Want The Crown Princess’s Position novel is a curious mix of disparate elements; Chinese palace drama, English period piece, and Japanese light novel. Somehow this combination manages to work despite the fact that it really, really shouldn’t. I think it’s mainly because the focus is more on the characters than the setting, which would would explain why I quickly started to lose interest in the second half as the frequency of rather unbelievable events picked up speed.

I picked up Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku (Japanese subtitle: Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku) hoping for something along the lines of Lv2 kara Cheat without the problematic romance aspects, only to instead get something closer to Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. A significantly less believable Smartphone. Although I tried to force my way through the childhood arc to see if it maybe got better… the rescue of the princess was one questionable romance flag too many.

Teisou Gyakuten Sekai no Doutei Henkyou Ryoushu Kishi also has believability issues, albeit less severe and centered on the setting itself rather than the initial event development; the role reversal is poorly implemented and surface-level at best (Honor of Duty looks like an intricately woven masterpiece in comparison). Worse, far worse, is that the protagonist appears to be an insufferable incel who can’t stop talking about his dick.

  • I’m Just a Villager: So What? & Lost Mask

Posted on July 8, 2026 3:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

There are several problems with the first Murabito Desu ga Nani ka? novel, most of which seem to be a result of the author having a questionable grasp on reality; frequently something will be stated only to have it get contradicted a few paragraphs later (e.g. I have no cheat skills -> I have two cheat skills, I want to be her equal -> I want her to stay weak and protect her) or a character will suddenly act completely differently/unbelievably.

Compounding that issue, this English translation has some noticeable errors where a character will clearly be talking about one person while the text refers to someone else. Had to drop it about halfway through, at the start of the third chapter, after that ludicrous meeting with the dragon king.

Chad Maske‘s Lost Mask is the first in a new series which feels a lot like their Moonrise novel. This one is effectively pure fantasy though (technically it appears to be post-apocalyptic) without any isekai aspects, a sizable crafting focus, and seems to be angling for more serious relationship development. It’s a lot of fun for the most part… although nearly everything to do with the rigged sparring match is fairly aggravating on a number of levels.

  • Our Party Nearly Wiped and Then Everything Went Downhill & VENUS MISSION

Posted on June 16, 2026 1:15 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first Zenmetsu End o Shinimonogurui de Kaihi shita. Party ga Yanda. novel has an interesting setup but suffers from a couple annoying character archetypes. Mainly the protagonist and his mentor. The former is the type that apologizes for everything and constantly gets lost in his own head; I know the setting is a grimdark fantasy world and you really hate that and love happy endings, you told me, you don’t need to keep bringing it up every other chapter. The latter… is a century-old nonhuman that inexplicably both looks and acts like a human child. Really could’ve done without her.

Venus Mission (English subtitle: I Was an Assassin-for-Hire Who Died, Now I’m Hunting Heroes in Another World) is closer to what I expected Ansatsushadearu Ore no Status ga Yuusha yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi nodaga to be like. That said, it’s only barely tolerable if you completely turn off your brain and even then there’s the notable technical issue of it often being difficult to tell who’s talking at any given time.

Despite the annoyances, I’ll probably follow them both for at least one more volume since I’m kind of starved for LNs when anything published by J-Novel Club is out of the running.

  • THE Misdeeds ~OF AN~ Extremely Arrogant -Villain- Aristocrat #3 & I Like Villains, so I Reincarnated as One

Posted on June 14, 2026 1:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

I was wavering on whether to continue Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou following the second novel, and this third novel cements my decision to drop it. There’s almost nothing praiseworthy about the uncomfortable harem elements it mostly focuses on and the breakneck parade of poorly implemented timeskips in the last fifth or so is particularly dire.

Akuyakuzuki no Ore, Oshi Chara ni Tensei (massive subtitle omitted) opens with a very poor first impression. The problem here is that the protagonist has the personality of a squealing fangirl… and his object of obsession is the character whose body he’s now inhabiting. It’s really, really awkward.

  • Witch and Mercenary #5 & Kunon the Sorcerer Can See #5

Posted on February 11, 2026 6:33 am by Offkorn Comment

The translation quality seems to be slipping in the fifth Majo to Youhei novel, with somewhat disjointed conversations and occasional difficulty in determining who should be speaking (although the latter’s probably the author’s fault). The plot developments are rather abrupt as well while the book as a whole doesn’t really feel like a part of a greater whole. It’s not bad enough to get me to drop it, but it does seem like a red flag for future novels.

The fifth Majutsushi Kunon wa Mieteiru novel meanwhile just comes across as sidestory filler; the events here could have been summarized in a paragraph and nothing of value would’ve been lost. The humor is still amusing at least, but if the next novel isn’t both over 200 pages and focused on some kind of significant development I’m going to have to drop it.

Had to drop the second Re:Monster novel about a third of the way in. The ‘romance’ aspects have not improved at all and the sudden full offensive against the humans is mind-boggling.

The second Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou novel does not start off well; events feel scattershot, arbitrary, with little to link them together. After the assassination attempt though it manages to regain the balance of the first novel and end on an entertaining enough note. Not sure how much longer it can milk this setup considering we’re already at S-rank threats, but I’m willing to keep following it for the time being.

Re:Monster is a reincarnation isekai that starts off on a questionably sci-fi Earth before transitioning to what seems to be a standard fantasy world… and I’m not really sure why the beginning is so oddly complex. Maybe the author wrote an earlier unpublished series in that setting? Regardless, the majority of the story is entertaining enough with solid action scenes and plenty of deadpan comedy. The main flaw would be the inclusion of the human women and everything related to them, with the elf situation coming in a more distant second (both being egregious fanservice, albeit of differing severity).

A completely different type of reincarnation isekai, Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou takes the unusual path of having the reincarnator get subsumed by the personality of the body they’ve possessed. The result being more of a fanfiction or ‘what if?’ version of a story than an actual isekai, one populated by a variety of overly excitable/perverted characters. It works surprisingly well.
