  • Other World & SYSTEM SUPERVILLAIN #1-2

Posted on August 17, 2026 9:41 am by Offkorn Comment

The twenty-third of Stuart Grosse‘s Lich Returnee novellas takes the unusual route of re-visiting the hero summoning world to see how it fares six years after the protagonist made her escape. Not all that much happens in it though, and the return seems to mostly exist as a way to jumpstart the path to apotheosis.

A series by the same author, System Supervillain features the dice rolls of their Winterborn series alongside some of the most gratuitous, ill-fitting sex scenes I’ve had the misfortune of encountering. The protagonist’s sex-related powers aren’t even his own, instead being granted by a nonsensical accessory. Such a waste.

  • DARK FATE #1-16

Posted on August 10, 2026 12:02 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Dark Fate novella series is misleading on a couple levels. The first is that while it gives the impression it will be similar to the author‘s Free VRMMO Life series… it is not (aside from both protagonists being former heroes who suddenly become rapacious slavers). Instead it turns out to be a variation on Into the Black, complete with the same spacefaring technology and Warhammer 40k references. An inferior Into the Black.

While it does not have the same ‘hell space’ issues, it has a worse problem: Unbalanced characterization. One-scene wonders have more personality than nearly any re-occurring character. The harem members in particular suffer from this so badly they may as well have been puppet-branded with how interchangeably indistinct they are.

The second bait & switch is that it’s in no way a revenge story. The protagonist almost immediately forgets about getting revenge on those who betrayed him, a situation later hand-waved away with ‘actually he did get revenge during an off-screen timeline’. This complete abandonment of early plotlines happens a few other times as well, most notably with that knowledge spirit that never appears again and the lamia having been genderswapped.

Overall the best way I can describe this series is as an intensely personal power-fantasy, tonally fitting in between Reborn as the First Boss and Corsairs & Cataclysms, which happens to have a distinct impregnation fetish on display.

  • The Transmigrated Side Character & Sixteen Ladies Enter the Palace

Posted on July 18, 2026 1:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The Transmigrated Side Character (subtitle: She Was Written to Shine Someone Else’s Light – He Had Other Plans) is a fairly entertaining little romance novella. Main issues would be that the setup feels completely unnatural, no reasons are given for why the protagonist acts as she does nor how she got there, and the events in the second half are pretty rushed.

D Abraham‘s first The Transmigrated Villainess Doesn’t Want The Crown Princess’s Position novel is a curious mix of disparate elements; Chinese palace drama, English period piece, and Japanese light novel. Somehow this combination manages to work despite the fact that it really, really shouldn’t. I think it’s mainly because the focus is more on the characters than the setting, which would would explain why I quickly started to lose interest in the second half as the frequency of rather unbelievable events picked up speed.

  • AcademY LIFE as an Archmage & CITY of CHAMPIONS: ONLINE

Posted on July 11, 2026 2:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first of Max Pants‘ Ardenth Academy novels brings to mind a fantasy take on Quantum Leap. An idea staggeringly well executed; the novel’s a practically perfect start to an overpowered protagonist series. The only nitpicks I have are that there’s a bit of repetition with the roommate’s dialog in the first classroom scenes and the mechanism behind the protagonist’s body swapping is both not explained and referenced in what may be a contradictory manner (depending on future events).

Stuart Grosse‘s first City of Champions: Online novella is heavily (anti-)racism themed and reads a bit more like a proof of concept than a proper story. It’s not overtly bad in any particular way… it just comes across as noticeably unpolished and overly focused on its theme (particularly when compared to some of his other series). Not sure at this point whether or not I’ll finish the rest.

  • INTO THE BLACK & FREE VRMMO LIFE #1

Posted on June 5, 2026 1:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Into the Black, a sci-fi VRMMORPG novella series by Stuart Grosse with significant references to various other works, is much better than I was expecting. Fundamentally, it’s like an amalgam of Lich Returnee and Corsairs & Cataclysms; the structure and atmosphere of the former with the protagonist, harem, and sex scene frequency of the latter.

Most of the series’ inspiration comes from fairly major franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40k, but there are also sizable references to Starcraft and Resident Evil/Biohazard (of all things) with more minor nods to things like Portal and Youjou Senki. Some of these work better than others and ultimately I ended up having to agree with one of the Amazon reviews that the high point is the harvester battle. Mostly because shortly after is when ‘hellspace’ (WH40k‘s warpspace), which is tied both directly and indirectly to almost all the worst parts of the series, shows up. Aside from that and everything related to it, my only complaint is that the implementation of slavery is fairly inconsistent and bordering on unbelievable.

On the other hand the author’s Free VRMMO Life novella series is unfortunately just as bad as I expected it to be. However, it wasn’t the acts of depravity that caused me to drop it. No, instead it’s how this gameworld that boasts total realism isn’t realistic in the slightest. Give yourself a 2-foot long dick and suffer no ill effects? Instantly add permanent enchantments to items with no material cost? Fresh characters still in the Tutorial can create unresistable, unremovable slave collars? Nope. Sorry. Hard pass.

  • A BOND BETWEEN EQUALS & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #22

Posted on May 24, 2026 12:55 pm by Offkorn Comment

The main thing to be aware of going into Luca De Rosa‘s A Bond Between Equals is that it features frequent, detailed, sexual scenes which tend to have a heavy focus on fluid dynamics. Less detailed is the System implementation, justified in-universe by it being on its last legs (to a greater degree than Heretical Fishing‘s), and the character interactions can be a bit uneven. What ended up being a deal-killer for me was how that whole computer room scene at the end played out and its implications for future developments… most notably the complete about-face on the harem issue.

Stuart Grosse‘s twenty-second Lich Returnee novella is one of the more laid-back ones focused on magecraft. It does however end with the indication that both the dragon subplot and the ‘left a hero behind on that fantasy world’ subplot are going to take center stage soon.

  • Ancient Dreams #1-4 & Marin’s Codex: Stories of Ancient Dreams

Posted on April 14, 2026 11:45 am by Offkorn Comment

Benjamin Medrano‘s Ancient Dreams series consists of a main trilogy, an epilogue of sorts, and a sidestory novel.

The main series is dark high fantasy with a heavy focus on corruption, secondary paranormal romance aspects, and minor dungeon core elements. It stands out mainly for not having a single protagonist (instead choosing to swap between various points of view across multiple factions) and for having an assortment of truly evil antagonists. The level of darkness is no joke either with there being a significant focus on the process of both inflicting and taking advantage of mental slavery (in notable comparison to the author’s Eve of Destruction series, which only deals with the aftermath).

The first two novels are easily the high point with the third kind of getting lost in the weeds of the martial conflict while also introducing a rather large number of minor characters which sort of dilute the impact. The fourth novel continues from where the third left off but primarily centers on resolving the remaining issues surrounding the goddess; it’s not particularly dark and also leaves a few dangling story threads for potential later novels. Personally I thought it was on par with the first two, but if you’re not interested in the religious conflict it will probably end up quite boring.

The sidestory novel, Marin’s Codex, is a bit difficult to pin down. It starts and ends with segments taking place after the main series, but the majority of it is a flashback to the end of Sistina’s mortal life millennia before the series began. It can be read as a stand-alone (if the darkness of the other novels is an issue) or as a prequel, but I think it works best if read after the third or fourth novel. In addition to that it also includes a pure-prequel novella-length telling of Sistina’s namesake’s encounter with the Nymph queen, which honestly doesn’t really add anything to the series and I’d actually suggest you skip it.

  • BEAST BUSINESS & THE SEA WICCHE CHRONICLES #1-2

Posted on April 9, 2026 11:43 am by Offkorn Comment

At first I’d thought Ilona Andrews‘ Beast Business (a Hidden Legacy sidestory novella) was mislabeled, but as it turns out the last quarter or so is taken up by some mostly unrelated short stories that were previously published on their website. Regardless, the main story turns out solid enough aside from the fact that it ends with the relationship issue no closer to being resolved and some oddities in the female lead’s reaction to seeing illusions that can cause fear. Why wouldn’t illusions be able to scare people? Seems like that should’ve been obvious.

Seana Kelly‘s first Sea Wicche novel is remarkably good. The romantic development doesn’t feel forced and despite having a not particularly rare ‘isolated person falls for someone who can bridge that isolation’ setup the author manages to weave in a bunch of disparate elements that somehow manage to work well together. My only real issue here is how quickly the protagonist folds in regards to the council thing.

The second novel though… the second decides to completely re-contextualize the protagonist’s relationship with her mother/grandmother in a way that heavily undermines their previous interactions. It gives the impression of a half-assed attempt to justify having forced her onto the council in the first place and I do not at all like the precedent it sets for potential future developments, so won’t be following the series any further.

  • CAEDA’S CURSE & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #21

Posted on March 3, 2026 12:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first book in what appears to be a new series, Argus Philo & Montgomery Quinn‘s Caeda’s Curse has a heavier sexual focus than their White Mage series. Which isn’t all that surprising in retrospect considering the curse in question turns out to be sourced from an incubus. What mainly stands out aside from that is how most of the protagonist’s problems can be traced back to simple poor decision making, rather than her negative luck attribute.

The twenty-first of Stuart Grosse‘s Lich Returnee novellas focuses on some military exercises and explanations regarding war magics in general. It also makes a minor reference to the ‘red dragon’ subplot, meaning that hasn’t been forgotten and may still turn out to be a future focus, and hints at what might be the series’ endgame in the epilogue portion.

  • THRONE OF THE FALLEN & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #20

Posted on December 6, 2025 1:27 pm by Offkorn Comment

Throne of the Fallen (subtitle: Deception Is the Most Wicked Game of All), the first of Kerri Maniscalco‘s Prince of Sin novels, has a very interesting setting alongside some fairly standard event development for a paranormal romance. Sadly, I ended up having to drop it shortly after the vampire court segment started raising some serious questions about the female lead’s intelligence in regards to her actions before the book proper began.

While I felt Stuart Grosse‘s previous Lich Returnee novella was rather lacking, this twentieth entry is basically exactly what I’ve come to expect/enjoy from the series. Essentially, it’s an extension of the fourth novella (with some of the elements of the identically titled fifth) and focused entirely on detailing the setting’s magic system.
