  • ANTECEDENTS’ LEGACY & Villainess’s Redemption

Posted on August 1, 2026 6:42 am by Offkorn Comment

Daniel Schinhofen‘s first Antecedents’ Legacy novel turned out quite different from the other two series of their’s I’ve read. What mainly stands out, in a bad way, is the protagonist’s pronounced horniness alongside the poorly thought-out setting. Moving in combat is lost-tech? Seriously?

The first of Vanessa Rhoswen‘s Reborn Villainess novels starts out rough due the cartoonishness of the villainy on display. Although events then pick up nicely for a time post-regression, it unfortunately soon becomes clear that the protagonist is an idiot. She keeps talking about how she’s a master schemer despite her future schemes having failed miserably and having only managed to destroy her own family (unintentionally). The ‘let’s pretend to faint instead of doing literally anything else’ scene where she ends up concussing herself was one straw too many.

  • A USUAL SUSPECT & HEAVENLY CHAOS #1-3

Posted on February 27, 2026 4:08 pm by Offkorn Comment

Vanessa Nelson‘s first Fractured Conclave novel mainly suffers from a great deal of contrivance and irrational character behavior; the inciting murder in particular turns out to be a mess of contradictions and nonsense by the end. Which is unfortunate, as it’s got a pretty interesting setting and decent enough protagonist.

While the Heavenly Chaos series shares a couple traits with the author‘s Aether’s Revival series (mainly the heavy food focus and pseudo-cultivation setting), it has a very different tone. The core issue here is that all three central characters have deep and persistent insecurities which end up referenced constantly, and by the third novel the entire production just becomes exhausting. Rather than a fantasy romance, a large chunk of these books reads like a transcription of someone’s real life relationship counseling session.

  • Aftermath & BULDOUN’S BLUNDER

Stuart Grosse‘s follow-up to the conclusion of Lich Returnee‘s ‘unlocking the seals’ plotline returns mostly to the style of the early novellas while wrapping up a few dangling plot threads. Sort of a mix between the second and fourth entries.

The tenth Aether’s Revival novel pretty much just confirmed my earlier concerns about the author dragging this current arc out far too long. There’s still no end in sight and I’m not thrilled by the thought of a centuries-spanning story being doled out in months-long segments.

  • AETHER’S REVIVAL

Posted on January 31, 2025 12:36 pm by Offkorn Comment

Daniel Schinhofen‘s Aether’s Revival series has been floating around my Amazon recommendations page for years now. While nothing about the description seemed like a deal-killer, nor did anything in particular stand out. And so it sat there… until just recently.

The first five books are essentially groundwork for what comes later and mostly consist of training, tournaments, and harem building. Apart from the re-occurring subfocus on ‘slowly eating aether-infused foods’, which is torturous, this part of the series is perfectly enjoyable despite its relatively slow pace. Events then pick up quite nicely in the sixth and seventh books only for the narrative to kind of stall in the eighth and (most of the) ninth. The last quarter or so of the ninth is very good, but I’m extremely concerned about how many more books are going to focus on that assistant ambassador post.

And while I mentioned there being a harem, it’s more like an orgy. All the girls are as attracted to each other as they are to the protagonist and there’s quite a bit of sexual content. While most is simple ‘and then sex happened’ or merely implied, every now and again a fully detailed scene will pop up. So that’s something to be aware of.
