  • Final Fantasy XIV – Sixth through Eighth Characters

Posted on March 5, 2023 7:17 am by Offkorn Comment

First off, let me just get it out of the way that I do not ever recommend anyone creating more than five characters tops. Honestly, since the Data Center travel function got implemented there’s not really much reason to go higher than four (one for each location cluster). So then why did I create eight? Boredom. Completionism. OCD. Take your pick.

The first of the ‘tertiary’ characters (who will stop advancing the main quest just after unlocking Purple Crafting scripts) was created on the Oceanian DC cluster primarily because I wanted to see just how poor a ‘poor’ server connection was. As it so happens it’s not all that bad at all. I wouldn’t want to play Samurai or bleeding-edge savage raids on it, but generally it’s only really noticeable in how little time you have to react to telegraphed AoE attacks.

Aside from that the only things to be aware of are that Alliance Raid roulette is pretty dead most of the time (good luck getting anything other than Crystal Tower to fire), Shadowbringers 8-man raids take quite some time to fire, Frontlines only has a brief 1-hour window starting from about 2:30pm AWST time, and activity in general falls off a cliff around 8pm.

The next was created in response to the addition of a fourth North American data center. Nothing much to say about this besides that the population seems to be too low to support frequent Alliance raids (or Frontlines at all). That’s not much of an issue though since you can quickly jump to one of the other three to do those.

Finally we come to my first Japanese DC character (and eighth overall). I chose Elemental as the starting point since it was formally the ‘English-friendly’ one pre-Oceanian cluster… and that may have been a mistake. I was hoping for something a bit different in atmosphere or playstyle but there really isn’t much.

The only things that stick out at this point are:

    1. You’ll occasionally get Frontlines ‘leaders’ who spam multiple sound effects every second
    2. No one uses Alliance chat in Alliance roulette
    3. Most people greet and sign-off with auto-translate phrases
    4. I have yet to come across people having a public conversation in a city center
    5. Tanks in 4-man roulettes seem more conservative with their pulls

Potential future characters (once I get that eighth one up to the start of Endwalker):

    • Normal Elf: White Mage (gnb/drg/bard/???)
    • Hroth 1: Paladin (blm, mnk, mch, ast)
    • Hroth 2: Black Mage (rpr, drk, sage, dnc)
    • Black Lizard: Bard (arc, drk, rpr)
    • Sun Cat: Samurai (arc, drk, dnc)
    • Tan Viera: Sage (pal, mnk, dnc, rdm)

  • Fushi no Kami #7 & The Apothecary Diaries

Posted on February 4, 2023 3:33 pm by Offkorn Comment

To my great surprise, the seventh Fushi no Kami novel turned out to be the series’ conclusion.

This was surprising mainly because half is devoted to talking in circles, a quarter is devoted to creating a hamfisted solution to the love triangle issue, and then the actual conclusion is handled by two abrupt 2-year time skips. Like… nothing gets resolved. The only potential silver-lining (if it can even be called that) is that I definitely would’ve dropped it here. Meaning I now don’t have to worry about missing anything or it potentially getting better.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto starts out with what could be seen as a self-contained novel. It’s got an established beginning, end, and plenty of development in-between. Sure it sometimes comes across more like a collection of short stories, but that’s not necessarily a negative. Honestly, it’s everything I had hoped the Koukyuu no Karasu Anime would’ve been like.

That said… I’m conflicted on whether or not to continue. I enjoyed it, yet honestly can’t see it ending up anywhere good if the additional volume summaries are to be believed. Guess I’ll take a ‘wait and see’ approach.

  • Rebuild World & I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage

Posted on February 2, 2023 1:01 am by Offkorn Comment

The Alluring Specter & Crazy, Reckless, and Rash are the first two books in the Rebuild World series, which uses an unconventional numbering scheme in addition to the rarity of having individual titles for each novel.

Basically they chart the path of a street urchin on his way to becoming an established mercenary as he’s guided by an AI with unknown (though almost certainly nefarious) goals through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s hard sci-fi for the most part with hints of potential romance/harem elements down the line and nothing much to complain about.

The first Moto Saikyou no Kenshi wa Isekai Mahou ni Akogareru book meanwhile is a more common example of a fantasy-to-fantasy overpowered protagonist reincarnation isekai. Said protagonist is overpowered thanks to retaining god-level swordsmanship from his previous life, while the isekai label appears to just be there to provide an excuse for in-character exposition about the setting.

Although nothing to write home about, it doesn’t have any glaring issues and should be entertaining enough for fans of the genre.

  • BERSERK: OF GLUTTONY #1-4 & The GM has LOGGED IN to ANOTHER WORLD

Posted on January 26, 2023 2:05 am by Offkorn Comment

Like a lot of series that focus on leveling systems, Boushoku no Berserk has an issue with stat inflation and balancing in general. This is even despite the author’s inclusion of a reset mechanic… because for ~some reason~ that same mechanic is tied to a weapon which requires exponentially more stats to unlock higher evolutions.

Still, the first three books manage to keep things under control for the most part and end up entertaining enough. The fourth however just has a parade of issues: Random guys stronger than the divine dragon just hanging out in the city the entire time, Myne’s baffling character assassination, the way Memil ends up being treated despite being an unambiguous victim, and the author apparently forgetting both that gluttony devours souls and that anyone with E-level stats is supposed to be immune to the paralyzing gaze of those with higher stats then themselves.

Just a total mess I have no interest in following any further.

GM ga Isekai ni Login Shimashita. on the other hand doesn’t need to worry about balancing since it’s an overpowered protagonist series with a literally invincible lead. Said protagonist’s personality is odd in that while he’s altruistic, he’s also a bit of a sociopath that isn’t phased by dismembering people… and has the bizarrely nonsensical belief that actual slavery is somehow beneficial (for the slave) when compared to modern-day wage slavery.

Strange personality aside, the rather abrupt/half-assed romance elements are the only other issue. Seems likely this will turn into an ‘ever-growing harem’ type of thing with little actual thought put into the relationship dynamic.

  • ROLL OVER AND DIE #1-4 & Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #2

Posted on January 23, 2023 10:39 am by Offkorn Comment

The “Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omouna” to Yuusha Party o Tsuihou sareta node, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai series, which has a completely different English title, starts off incredibly similar to Shin no Nakama only to quickly diverge.

While as that focuses on slice of life events and romance (with interludes of action/drama), this instead mainly features gore-flinging violence and body horror (with slice of life and romantic interludes). And rather surprisingly, it does a pretty good job managing the balancing act through these first four novels. There only ends up being two issues: The first and less serious (since it only really applies to the first novel) is that the setting’s slavery implementation is little better than a plot device with basically no logic behind it.

The second, more serious issue, is the shoujo ai elements that piggyback off the central yuri relationship. There is not one, but two old woman <-> young girl pairings in here that advance very quickly in red flag-triggering directions.

Free Life Fantasy’s second novel meanwhile is basically more of the same content present in the first. Which is to say detailed cooking scenes take center stage with hemming and hawing over mechanic choices coming in second. Action and setting development then round things out as almost filler content. To give you an idea of just how important this series considers cooking to be: A fighting tournament is completely glossed over in favor of describing the preparation of some beef stew. Let the implications of that sink in for a bit.

And yet… it still ends up entertaining for the most part. Only real potential issue is that it looks like it may be going down the same road as Bofuri in piling overpowered abilities onto the protagonist.

  • Fushi no Kami: Rebuilding Civilization Starts with a Village #1-6

Posted on December 10, 2022 11:26 pm by Offkorn Comment

On the surface, Fushi no Kami is your standard ‘person with knowledge of advanced tech finds themselves in a low tech world’ type of story.

As it progresses however it turns out it’s not quite that simple. For one thing, rather than from modern-day Earth, the protagonist appears to have been reincarnated from an advanced nanomachine using society. For another this isn’t a generic fantasy world, but rather a post-apocalyptic one with mostly exhausted natural resources (no fossil fuels, metals and even stone are relatively rare). It’s also not quite a pure kingdom building story, as there’s both a significant romance subtheme and a re-occurring plotline hinting that there’s far more to the protagonist than mere memories from a past life.

Character-wise it also shakes things up a bit by having neither of the two romantic leads fit into a particular gender stereotype: Maika has the attributes of both a cute girl being cute and a hardened, bloodthirsty swordsmaster. Ash the traits of both a charismatic leader of men and somewhat ditzy airhead when it comes to interpersonal relations. The dynamic works shockingly well and even extends to the various side characters who get paired up over time.

So I’ll definitely be continuing to follow this series to see whether or not the author can stick the landing.

Posted on October 23, 2022 9:51 am by Offkorn Comment

Free Life Fantasy Online turned out to be quite similar to Bofuri. Main differences are a significant cooking subfocus and how the protagonist here is an experienced gamer who deliberately seeks out an eccentric character build. There’s also a pretty big focus on explaining/expositing upon the game design which I honestly could do without.

If the Afterword is any indication though, I doubt the series will get any less technical as it progresses. Seems the author actually wanted to be a game dev and decided that writing a novel was the best way to realize that dream.

The Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! books on the other hand don’t remind me of any one particular series, but rather several; Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, Ansatsu Kizoku, and Knight’s & Magic. Almost no romance elements here though, at least not yet (the stage is set for a potential love triangle-slash-harem down the line however).

What’s most interesting about this series is the magic system. Basically, it takes a standard ‘language of power’ setup and tweaks it by having spell effectiveness be determined by sentence structure, personal imagination, and environmental context. For example: A spell that uses ‘darkness’ or ‘night’ in its incantation will be less effective when cast in daylight (regardless of its intended effects). It’s a neat idea that provides a credible reason for why the protagonist can be so effective in combat situations despite his lackluster magic reserves.

  • The Firebird Chronicles

Posted on October 13, 2022 4:56 am by Offkorn Comment

T.A. White’s Firebird Chronicles reminds me of series like Sirantha Jax and Theirs Not to Reason Why. Series that I had almost forgotten I’d missed.

What’s interesting about these first four books (Rules of Redemption, Age of Deception, Threshold of Annihilation, and Facets of Revolution) is that they tell a continuous story; the next book begins immediately from where the previous ends in an unbroken scene. This poses a bit of a problem since the series is currently incomplete… although I’m not sure if it’s better or worse than using a conventional style of cliffhanger.

Content-wise you have your standard brash female protagonist with abnormal power forced onto a path she initially doesn’t want which features a love interest it initially seems like a bad idea to get involved with. Yet, despite the fact that I really hate stories where people in positions of power force their views/goals on others this one ends up managing to walk a tightrope balance by having those rulers actually care about the people they’re trying to rule. Which opens the door for compromise (following a conflict of some sort of course).

That said, the way Facets of Revolution sets the stage for its presumed follow-up is incredibly contrived. Just cringe-inducing idiocy from all involved that does not bode well for whatever the author intends as the endgame.

  • FINAL FANTASY XIV – Island Santuary

Posted on September 4, 2022 4:02 am by Offkorn Comment

The Island Sanctuary is Endwalker‘s version of the game’s ‘expansion-specific restoration project’. Sort of a more personalized version of the Firmament.

For the most part this area is pretty straight-forward, but there are a few things it will help to know about in advance:

    – Everything can be built at Sanctuary level 9 (level 10 unlocks flying).
    – Pasture and cropland both max out at level 3 with 20 slots. Workshops and granaries also max out at level 3.
    – Each material has a ‘best’ place to farm it from. Logs/Clay along the river to the east and Limestone/Vines along the river to the north, for example.
    – Logs are in highest demand for building materials (upgrading everything will require ~200-300).
    – You’ll ultimately need 9 Garnets, 6 Spruce Logs, and 3 Silver Ore. All of which can only be acquired from specific daily expeditions.
    – There doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between the various animals you can capture.
    – Automating your pasture/cropland maintenance will not give you gathering XP.

It’s an interesting idea, and fairly well executed… but I do wish there were more personalization options available. You don’t really have much choice with which buildings to construct, and the only visual changes you can make are to downgrade to an earlier tier.

  • Wasteland 3 & Triangle Strategy

Posted on July 4, 2022 10:06 am by Offkorn Comment

I picked up Wasteland 3 quite some time back on a whim, despite not being particularly fond of its prequel. Played up through clearing the Bizarre location, then put it down to potentially continue later… which occurred around the time I was playing Cyberpunk. So at this point I can safely say I’m not going back to it.

It’s okay I guess? There’s just this weird balancing issue where you kind of have to max out a couple unique skills on each character as quickly as possible to progress smoothly, while your attribute progression will basically be identical across all characters. I’m not really a fan of the midwestern flavor either.

Another game I was playing at that time was Triangle Strategy, which I ~think~ I heard about on some forum or other. And as with Wasteland my interest just kind of drained away one day for a similar reason: While the game boasts non-linearity in its storyline decisions it has extremely rigid character upgrade options. You can’t change a character’s equipment and their ability upgrade trees are ~75% generic attribute increases, which gets boring real fast.

It’s damn near criminal that Final Fantasy Tactics continues to remain one of best examples of a complex, large-scale tactical RPG.
