Decided to try this game after someone mentioned it was as enjoyable (presumably in relation to story or combat mechanics) as Triangle Strategy with more character-building complexity than FFT or Tactics Ogre.

They were 100% correct about the character development and itemization systems, but at this point (chapter 1 completed) I’m not really seeing anything particularly noteworthy about it in any other respect. Everything other than combat is presented in a standard visual novel style, and so far the character interactions and plot developments are remarkably similar to what you’d find in a Legend of Heroes game. Your available party members are also initially quite limited (1-2 more will become available each chapter it seems) and there’s no option to recruit generic units.

Which is not to say it’s bad. If you’re looking for a solid tactical RPG that gives plenty of options for character building this will certainly scratch that itch. Just be aware of the limitations going in.

  • RYN OF AVONSIDE: THE RING & OUTRUN

Posted on February 17, 2026 4:02 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first of Amelia MacIntyre‘s Ryn of Avonside novels mainly stands out for featuring a remarkably unconventional plant-based magic system. The setting itself isn’t particularly common either, though in effect it isn’t much different at this point from a standard fantasy world, while the romance elements are pretty cute. Main thing to be aware of is that unlike some genderswap stories, the gender-related issues here are rather prominent and a significant subtheme.

Outrun: Neon Divide‘s setting closely resembles what you’d get by infusing Shadowrun‘s fantasy elements into Cyberpunk 2077. It really nails that Cyberpunk feel to the point I seriously considered re-installing the game and had a protagonist entertaining enough to justify continuing on to the web novel version.

While for the most part events and character behavior remain on-par with that first novel, the academy arc (why is there an academy arc?) heavily shook my interest in the series. Not quite enough to drop it though and for a time it recovers well enough. Ultimately it was around the 138th chapter I had to stop, as her attempts to become a phantom thief were simply not something I cared about at all.

  • MAGICAL GIRL MECHANICAL HEART #2 & AWAKEN ONLINE #1-9

Posted on February 10, 2026 11:26 am by Offkorn Comment

Natalie Maher‘s second Magical Girl Mechanical Heart novel is a mostly seamless, if initially less dark, continuation of the prequel. I’m not thrilled about the ending confrontation though, which comes across as rather abrupt and features a lengthy combat sequence besides. Throwing all that character development away feels like such a massive waste.

Travis Bagwell‘s Awaken Online series brings to mind a villainous protagonist version of Infinite Dendogram with a greater focus on events outside the game world. And like that series this one also has sidestory novels told from the perspective of a different character mixed into the main series.

Despite what it may look like at the beginning this is not really an overpowered protagonist series, but instead closer to a strategic MC series with battle shounen elements. Most of the time is spent on either training or working through some sort of seemingly overwhelming problem, with the rest focused on how successful the protagonist’s plans/gambles turn out (often as a result of a last minute power-up/development). The series’ main flaw is that every so often the level of believability will just drop straight through the floor, and I ended up deciding to not continue on into the tenth novel specifically due to how the eighth’s ending brought to mind SAO: Alicization‘s (although the descriptions for those later novels also played a part).

As for the sidestories, the third novel focuses on Riley and is easily the weakest of the bunch (to the point I’d suggest completely ignoring it if it weren’t referenced so much). The beginning and end are decent enough, but the vast majority of the questing in the mage city is just incredibly dull/annoying. The next is the fifth novel, which is fantastic but should absolutely be read before the fourth, as being already familiar with Eliza and the water god greatly enhances event development. The seventh and ninth books are the next to focus on sidestories and both end up solid, the former featuring Frank and the latter a mostly new set of characters who apparently become relevant in the tenth novel.

There’s also a sidestory trilogy laying out the antagonist from the eighth book’s backstory, but I originally ignored it because after finishing the third my patience with cultivator-like fire mages had worn out. Then, after reading that eighth novel, the reasoning evolved into simply having no interest whatsoever in that character nor anything related to him.

  • Dragon’s Justice #1-6 & Dungeon Diving #1-10

Posted on January 21, 2026 10:44 am by Offkorn Comment

An earlier series by the author of Returner’s Defiance, Dragon’s Justice has a rough beginning with all the ‘inner beast’ stuff. Fortunately it gets better by the end of the first novel and even manages to keep the harem elements under control for a decent period of time. It’s not until the fourth that the number of love interests begins to overflow, and even then the series remains entertaining until the sixth.

That’s where I had to drop it with all the nonsense surrounding the lost dragon village. Either you have an overpowered protagonist or you do not, no good will ever come from trying to play the underdog or damsel in distress card for such a character. Another issue is that there really isn’t any proper transition, mentality-wise, from ‘average college student’ to ‘I am the law’.

Dungeon Diving is also a series by the same author, one which handles the harem elements far better. While it’s true said harem forms almost instantly, it remains small for quite some time and even ten books in remains modestly sized. Which is a staggering accomplishment considering the setting. What’s a bit more interesting is how many of the MMO elements were giving me flashbacks to playing FFXIV; unlike some authors this one seems to actually know the games’ mechanics.

Honestly I was not expecting to like this series at all considering the whole dungeon focus, yet the various genre elements are blended together fantastically and there aren’t any unlikeable characters to bring it down. These first ten books are enjoyable almost entirely throughout and my only complaints are fairly minor: A male student rising up as the leader of an otherwise all-girls school is a bad look, Crimson being a switch feels especially gratuitous, and the media interview segments in the tenth novel are physically painful.

  • DE’VAS CHRONICLES #1-4 & PATHS OF AkashiC #1-2

Posted on January 4, 2026 11:27 am by Offkorn Comment

Chase Kilgore‘s De’Vas Chronicles series had been floating around my recommendations for quite some time now. While I don’t regret waiting so long to check it out, since it meant I had four books to read rather than one, I do wonder why I’d been avoiding it in the first place since there’s nothing that could be considered objectionable about it beyond the initial romance being a bit too rushed.

The characters are distinct and amusing, the protagonist is plenty powerful, the additional romances are paced out well, and events move along fluidly. Really my only complaint is that the scope of the opposing forces keeps inexplicably escalating. You start out against a reclusive district boss, who was indirectly being manipulated by a more powerful district boss, but turns out he was working for shady council members, but they were working for a superpowered former council member… and now they were working for some even more powerful mysterious other. It’s ridiculous.

The first two of Bainin‘s Paths of Akashic novels brought to mind a combination of Guardian of Aster Fall and Primer for the Apocalypse. Although it starts off enjoyable enough, the sudden shift to body cultivation halfway through Initiation is incredibly jarring. The second novel then kind of ambles along in a weird liminal space before abruptly ending the trial year with a pseudo-tournament arc. On the fence about whether or not to continue I looked at some of the descriptions for the later novels and ultimately decided against it after seeing what the fifth decided to focus on.

  • The Wyrmlord’s Wrath & Heretic Spellblade: EPILOGUE

Posted on December 29, 2025 10:43 am by Offkorn Comment

Sharing quite a number of similarities with the author‘s earlier Corsairs and Cataclysms series, this first Wyrmlord’s Wrath novel mostly stands out for not featuring slavery and going even harder on the harem. While I wouldn’t say it’s bad… it also doesn’t really seem to offer anything notably different. So unless you had to drop C&C due to the slavery focus there’s not really much reason to read this.

Coming seemingly out of nowhere, K.D. Robertson‘s ninth Heretic Spellblade novel claims to be an epilogue to the series. In reality though it reads more like a continuation, one picking up after a six-year timeskip that arguably leaves more dangling threads than it began with. The only thing that gets ‘solved’ is the continued presence of the outer being’s doorway. Which is not necessarily a bad thing unless the author truly means for there to be no more stories featuring these characters.

  • NOWHERE STARS #1-3 & The Abandoned REINCARNATION SAGE #1-2

Posted on December 25, 2025 2:04 pm by Offkorn Comment

A Madoka-like series formatted in the style of a Japanese light novel, Nowhere Stars revolves around horrors both physical and mental from multiple different vectors; personal, familial, societal, eldritch. When it started out the only issues it really had were that the protagonist goes from “I’ll do anything to live” to “No get out, I have to sleep on this” in the blink of an eye, and the harbinger-related scenes occasionally being too wordy. By the end of the third though I did not like how the direction of events seemed to be forcing the protagonist into becoming a celebrity against her core desires.

The Suterareta Tensei Kenja series, whose English publisher can’t seem to decide on a translation for its subtitle (monster’s, monsters, and monsters’ are all used in different places), is basically a mix of Tensura and Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei. The protagonist is a workaholic who can never stop moving like the latter series’ and he’s building a monster town while directly evolving the inhabitants like the former’s, the result being a purestrain overpowered protagonist escapist fantasy with slightly too fast pacing. Oh, and while it should be noted that it currently has no romance elements… based on the highly questionable artwork included I suspect that will eventually change.

  • The Seven Rings & AUGMENTED ASPECTS: ROYAL BLOOD

Posted on December 8, 2025 6:22 pm by Offkorn Comment

The conclusion to Nora Roberts‘ Lost Bride trilogy is much like the previous two books. Overall I’d have to say this is far more a romance than a mystery series, as the actual mystery is resolved pretty quickly (through brute force) in the last third. To the point I feel the witch wasn’t even necessary; her role could’ve theoretically been handled by a more competent version of the protagonist’s ex-fiancé.

The second Augmented Aspects novel expands on the first remarkably well despite going off in what seems like a fairly random direction. Rogue/Healer is an exceedingly rare character archetype after all. It is not without its problems though, some more serious than others. Less serious ones being the description being misleading and there being an assortment of minor technical issues, while the most serious is a pretty large plot hole.

In the last part of the novel it’s stated that her magical beacon flaw (sensible) and green eyes (utter nonsense) are present in all of her doppelganger forms. Which if true would’ve made it impossible for her to have taken the place of the local Mage Guild Master, let alone continue to impersonate him. How the web novel readers didn’t catch this, nevermind a professional editor, is baffling.

  • THRONE OF THE FALLEN & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #20

Posted on December 6, 2025 1:27 pm by Offkorn Comment

Throne of the Fallen (subtitle: Deception Is the Most Wicked Game of All), the first of Kerri Maniscalco‘s Prince of Sin novels, has a very interesting setting alongside some fairly standard event development for a paranormal romance. Sadly, I ended up having to drop it shortly after the vampire court segment started raising some serious questions about the female lead’s intelligence in regards to her actions before the book proper began.

While I felt Stuart Grosse‘s previous Lich Returnee novella was rather lacking, this twentieth entry is basically exactly what I’ve come to expect/enjoy from the series. Essentially, it’s an extension of the fourth novella (with some of the elements of the identically titled fifth) and focused entirely on detailing the setting’s magic system.

  • Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint #2 & Who Killed the Hero?: Tale of the Prophecy

Posted on November 27, 2025 1:51 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Jeonjijeok Dokja Sijeom novel is a notable step down from the prequel. The pacing is far, far too frantic, the plot developments are pretty random, and the character actions are simplistic. I see no reason to go any further.

I had been wondering how there could possibly be a continuation of Dare ga Yuusha o Koroshita ka considering the way it ended, and the second novel being mostly a prequel turned out to be the answer. Focused on someone with a tangential relationship to the hero, this story hits many of the same beats while giving a bit of a wider view of what was happening in the world before the demon king fell. And while not quite as good as that first novel, it works well as a supplement.
