    Sworded Affair

A post-apocalyptic System story that alternates between open-world urban fantasy and game-like dungeon clearing, featuring an emotionally detached ‘true neutral’ protagonist (doesn’t play favorites, will do anything if there’s an acceptable reward). While the whole tower climbing segment goes on for far too long, and the current time palace one is heading in the same direction, the open-world segments and character interactions are a ton of fun.

    More to Love

A ‘trapped in a game’ story with the twist of being isekai’d into a side character’s body with no knowledge of the game in question. While the pacing’s overly rushed from the point of her awakening through the introduction of the third love interest, it settles down admirably afterward into a nice mix of comedy and drama with occasional spurts of action.

    The Spider Dilemma

I went into this expecting a monster reincarnation story and instead got a three-way unrelated protagonist split with two of them having nothing to do with spiders. It’s not bad by any stretch, just not the kind of story I was looking for.

The Holy Fool: Darkness & Hellfire

The beginning is rough. All the misunderstandings and struggle to find money/housing or learn basic setting aspects is not something I’m interested in and after 14 chapters of that I had to tap out.

    TRINITY OF MAGIC

The first two books are an academy arc, with the first focused on education while the second is on combat, and that second one is basically a complete waste of time. Events could have very easily advanced from the end of the first to the start of the third without all the repetition and questionable developments of the second. Which brings us to the series’ main issue: The author seems to have a rigid checklist of events they’re deadset on including regardless of how little sense they make in relation to either earlier developments or the various characters’ actions/statements.

Stuart Grosse‘s fifteenth Lich Returnee novella holds no surprises, beyond that I continue to have no complaints. I can’t even quite explain how the various elements manage to combine in just the right way… but they do.

There are two things to be aware of about Devan Drake‘s Corsairs & Cataclysms series which really should have been mentioned in the description. The first is that the protagonist is not simply a pirate, but a slaver pirate (although this becomes less significant beyond the first book). The second is that, as stated in the Foreword, it’s an erotic power fantasy. What that means in practice is that sexual topics come up in conversation from time to time, the love interests all have some degree of domination fetish, and there are a few dedicated sex scene chapters per novel.

While those two things alone will probably be a deal breaker for many, there’s one more potential issue: The exposition. Just about everything under the sun gets exposited upon at some point and it can really kill a scene’s forward momentum when it gets out of hand… though oddly enough, one particular thing (Pandaemonium) doesn’t get any mention at all until it suddenly becomes a central plot point from the third book on. And then less a significant issue but still a general annoyance is how frequently old enemies keep crawling back to cause mischief.

All that said, if you can look past the above then the amusing character dynamics and standard power fantasy aspects are more than solid enough to carry the series. Up to this point anyway. For whatever reason the length of each subsequent novel has been decreasing (and the first third of the fourth is basically a side-story on top of that), which seems like it’s going to be an issue with the fifth presumably being the last despite there being more than a few loose ends still floating about.

  • MOONFALL, Aftermath, & The Seal of Earth

The first thing to be aware of about Selkie Myth‘s Moonfall novel is that it’s quite short, being only slightly longer than your average light novel. The second is that it’s transitionary, consisting mostly of isolated events separated by multiple-year timeskips (although unlike in the previous novel the titular event here does get significant coverage). If neither of those things sound like a problem to you then it should end up just as entertaining as the series’ earlier installments.

Stuart Grosse‘s fourth Reborn as the First Boss novella takes a middle path where the sex is concerned. While the early books had detailed sex scenes and the previous one had none at all, this one compromises by mentioning the act without going into a play-by-play. Aside from that the only thing of note is that the blue boxes are a bit heavy here (eating up the limited page count by quite a bit) due to a somewhat large level-up after the goblin fight.

It’s been a while since I read the fourteenth Lich Returnee novella (sometime in mid-July) and… honestly at this point I can’t remember anything notable about it besides that it wasn’t bad. I think I’ll have to stop trying to pair these with the above series and just post them as they appear.

    Rise of the Frontier Lord

While there are some exceptionally contrived bits, like the whole sequence with the throne ship and miasma (or the spontaneous herald thing), this is a pretty fun kingdom-building story with a diverse cast. At this point I’d have to say the biggest oddity is how the Imperials don’t take the existence of the Wolf-God seriously despite being fully aware of multiple other gods.

    From Londoner To Lord

A somewhat slowly paced kingdom-building story that occasionally goes a bit too heavy on the sentimentality. And while I’m not personally fond of the advertising scheme the author has adopted (which greatly resembles what a pay-to-win MMO would use), nor how desperate they seem to be to acquire more readers, if you just focus on the story itself while ignoring the set-dressing it ends up a decent enough time-waster.

    Reborn as a Fantasy General

A story about an aspiring historian war-nerd who gets summoned to a Warhammer-like world as a savior figure destined to lead a band of ratmen to greatness. Apart from having a misleading title (no one is reborn here) the only real issue is how abnormally fast the protagonist adapts to life underground among pestilence-worshiping cannibals. That said, I’m not really a fan of the first book’s rushed ending, nor the total setting/character shift of the second.

    Rise Of The Worthy

While interesting, there are some weird holes in the setting and event developments that strain credulity to the breaking point.

    Soul Merger

A fun and engaging series (the MC is apparently only succubus-adjacent to justify an entirely female cast) that handles creature-related lore-dumps by providing in-universe encyclopedia entries as integrated chapters. Unfortunately, at a certain point the protagonists decide to go raiding the bottom of a labyrinth for ~reasons~ and when the inevitable happens I just lost all interest in finishing it.

    A Relatively Powerful Mage

A well-written (apart from some rather abrupt romantic developments) post-apocalyptic System-based series. Despite having a good mix of personal power-gain and empire-building I ended up having to drop it at the end of the first book, at which point it explicitly decides to set off on a path of human supremacy. That’s just not something I’m interested in reading about.

    MAGUS REBORN

Rather similar to Legend of the Arch Magus. The key difference here is that while that overpowered protagonist steamrolls all opposition without complication, this one occasionally struggles a bit (and there are also some tertiary cultivation aspects). So it basically comes down to a matter of personal preference. Do beware that it could use another editing pass or two though, as the occasional technical error is fairly noticeable.

    Wraithwood Botanist

This is an interesting series that doesn’t really resemble anything I’ve read before, with a fairly well developed setting and distinct characters. On the negative side of things the author is one of those unwilling to fix typos and technical errors pointed out in the comments, and made a really odd choice to keep old, obsolete chapters up (which now have to be skipped past) instead of editing/replacing them with the rewritten ones.

    The New DARK LORD

The first book plays out much like a standard isekai hero tale, just one with an unambiguously brutal protagonist somewhat similar to Father of Monstrosity‘s. The second book however completely changes gears to present the promised ‘rise of a new dark lord’ content. A bit too early to see how that will turn out, but it’s definitely a solid enough start.

    AVAUNT

Unusual for being a single complete book rather than a series, this story is rather unique with a combination of Jack Vance-ish offhand absurdity, Fargo-ish mix of violence and dark comedy, and a magic system that resembles computer code.

Technomancer: How I Became the Hapless Sidekick of the World’s Greatest Magical Girl

Wasn’t really onboard with the first couple of chapters’ themes, and the lead-up to the protagonist’s awakening was just far too contrived.

    THE EMPEROR’S CONCUBINE

Not sure whether it’s because I’ve just read too many stories with this setup, or the writing style was just a bit too stilted, but I could not get into this one. I will say that having the protagonist not be a blatantly isekai’d earthling was an interesting choice… but that may have contributed to the awkwardness of her actions.

    IN A CIVILIZED MANNER

The protagonist simply rubbed me the wrong way. The setup’s kind of odd as well.

    Cursed Explorer of the Arcana

While this started out good with a distinct Dragoneye Moons vibe, the slavery sideplot dragged it down, the genocidal trek through the forest didn’t help any, and the protagonist of said slavery plotline becoming a central character was the nail in the coffin.

    RUTHLESS: Path of Conquest

Despite there being nothing in particular I can point to, the story as a whole was just slightly offputting enough to not want to bother following it for an extended period… though I suspect the oddly high level of modern realism played a part.

  • The Grave of VALOR, HERETICAL FISHING #2, & SHATTERED BOUNDARIES

Posted on July 19, 2024 2:53 pm by Offkorn Comment

Aside from some grammatical issues and a bizarre cover image, the fourth book in D.C. Haenlien‘s Adelheid series is okayish I suppose. I’m not really sold on the vampire aspects though and the war focus isn’t all that interesting. Not sure if I’m going to continue following it at this point.

Haylock Jobson‘s second Heretical Fishing novel starts off rather worse than the prequel; it goes a bit too heavy on the cultivator aspects while introducing far too many new awakened animals. Yet, at the very end, an utterly ridiculous plan to assault the capital comes together beautifully and makes all the lead-up worthwhile.

I’ve got almost no complaints with the third entry in Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 series. It continues merrily along the path it set out with the only hiccup being an incredibly out of place drinking contest. Plenty of action, some comedy, and even a bit of notable romantic development.

  • The Approach of Dawn, REBORN as the FIRST BOSS #3, & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #13

Posted on June 27, 2024 1:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

The second of Braided Sky‘s Primer for the Apocalypse novels is much like the first in that most of the action takes place in the real world while the game is basically an afterthought (which eventually disappears completely). The ending leaves things a little unclear as to whether it’s going to head in a Na Honjaman Level-Up direction or not, but the journey’s so far been entertaining enough for me to stick around to see which way it goes.

Stuart Grosse‘s third Reborn First Boss novella focuses entirely on defending a town from a goblin attack. Unlike the earlier books there are no sexual scenes here, which is a very good sign for future developments.

Another of the above author’s series, the thirteenth Lich Returnee entry focuses on the expected seal unlocking, but also takes some time to give an update on the Yakuza Princess’ relationship situation. It’s surprising how much can be accomplished in a book a third the size of a standard paperback.

    DIARY OF A TEENAGED MIMIC

Starting off like a progression fantasy, this series quickly abandons that path to become a romance-heavy multi-genre series instead. There are a few things to be aware of going in: First is that it’s extremely graphic in both its language and violent aspects, second is that it becomes highly sexual with frequent references to wanting to have or having had sex (although there’s only like one actual sex scene), and third is that the pacing is all over the place due to each chapter covering a day or less of in-universe time. On a more personal note, I had to force myself through much of the third book, as it revolves around a hamfisted and exceptionally nonsensical Covid plotline.

    OTHERWORLDY ANARCHIST

To be honest I’m not really sure what to say about this series. The protagonist is overpowered, but not glaringly so; she’s discriminated against, but also privileged; her enemies are almost cartoonishly evil, yet their actions still feel realistic. It’s a strange composition. As an aside, it also happens to have some interesting early parallels with Dragoneye Moons.

    Amber the Cursed Berserker

This series jumps between ensemble scenes and Na Honjaman Level-Up scenes, while mixing standard system progression with cultivation. It shouldn’t work, and yet it somehow does… assuming you like overpowered protagonists getting exponentially more overpowered.

    RISE OF THE Living Forge

A crafting-heavy ensemble progression fantasy with significant romance aspects, recent pseudo-kingdom-building aspects, and a fairly interesting setting. My only real complaints at this point are that it features generic gamified dungeons and the depressingly common ‘protagonists steamroll enemies twice their level for ~reasons~’ trope.

    Reincarnation Gone Wrong

A self-aware progression isekai where things keep going wrong for the protagonist in both amusing and tragic ways. Though nominally a comedy, it goes to some pretty pitch-black places at times.

    THE DEMON EMPRESS

A pretty fun (tragic backstory aside) overpowered protagonist isekai that reminds me a little of Leadale. You may want to give it a pass if you’re looking for something to follow reliably however, as it seems to only update about twice a month.

    BLAKE PUDDING

Started off well enough, only to deteriorate following the first boss fight. Why did she suddenly start trying to fight like a human? How could she not know the difference between a magical and physical ability? Why didn’t she ask the goddess about swapping/removing skills? By the time the undead chimera finally died it became too painful to continue.

    Royal Princess of Blood

Think I tapped out after two paragraphs. The protagonist’s narcissism was just overwhelming.

    Final Boss Best Friends

Formerly known as Endless Apocalypse, the events of this story felt scripted. Maybe if the plane had crashed directly into the dungeon it would’ve been tolerable, but as it is there’s just too many overly convenient (antagonistic) plot developments strung together.

    BROKER

Got increasingly invested over the course of the first chapter only to become completely disgusted the moment her inexplicable new abilities activated at the end. Just zero interest to see how/if that got justified.

    reign of villainy: Akemi

I get that she treats the world like a game due to the whole reincarnation thing, and it was fun enough up until she enters the town, but that’s no excuse to take the dumbest actions possible.

    Apocalypse: Reborn As A Monster

Forgot to mention this series in the previous web novel roundup. Wasn’t a fan of the protagonist’s ‘arrogant noble’ archetype and took an instant dislike to the System implementation after it awakened.

    Saintess Summons Skeletons

I actually read a bit of this quite some time back, somewhere around when I was looking for the web version of Journey of Black and Red, and forgot about it. Basically, the pacing’s much too fast and the protagonist is random in a bad way.

  • REBORN as the FIRST BOSS #1-2 & LEVIATHAN

Posted on April 25, 2024 9:27 am by Offkorn Comment

Another novella series, Reborn as the First Boss is notably different from the author‘s Lich Returnee series.

That’s post-isekai while this is ‘reincarnated into a game world’, that features an asexual antihero while this has a promiscuous villain in the lead, and that is superficially anti-slavery while this is openly pro-slavery. What they share is a similar page count, an overpowered protagonist (albeit less of one here), and entertaining character interactions. So give it a chance if you liked that and don’t mind the occasional sex scene.

I picked up Erik Schubach‘s Leviathan, the first book in his Worldship Files series, by accident. See, I have two hard rules about whether or not to pick up a series: Avoid those that advertise the genre in their title (Half-Life Empire slipped through here because I mistook ‘Alien Apocalypse’ for the series name), and avoid any with a consistently sub-200 page count (novellas excluded). This falls into the latter category, with each book being a bit shorter than your average light novel.

That said, it seems decent enough if you can look past the rather forced romance elements. ‘Urban fantasy on a colony ship’ is a pretty interesting setting at least.

Against my better judgement, I went and picked up the fourth Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! novel after watching the second season of the Anime. The adaptation of the third novel wasn’t as head-and-shoulders above the one for the first two, so I figured I wouldn’t be missing much by reading the source material’s version of the ‘return to Earth’ arc immediately.

Two things quickly became clear. The first being that the original version of the wedding arc was severely lacking compared to the adaptation, and the second being that the start of the ‘return’ arc is completely different from what was shown at the end of the Anime. There are neither cyborgs nor a rescue in the original, which leaves me wondering what exactly the showrunners are up to.

Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi‘s second entry is much like the first content-wise. Though a little on the short side, the pacing is solid and events are wrapped up nicely without any glaring absences. The most notable aspect would probably be Adel obliviously stealing the affections of the princess’ alternate timeline fiancé.
