  • Primer for the Apocalypse & Awakening

Posted on March 7, 2024 4:15 am by Offkorn Comment

The first of Braided Sky‘s Primer for the Apocalypse books is a bit of a bait and switch as there’s not actually much time spent in the game world at all. Most of the focus is in the physical world, split between family interactions and exploring real dungeons, and in the classrooms of a virtual academy. It’s okay so far, but the pacing is fairly slow and it’s a bit strange no one thinks to connect the protagonist’s exceptional Time affinity with her unusually fast growth rate.

I went into Hikaru Genji‘s first Son of the Hero King novel braced for a certain amount of perversion based on the cover alone. Yet, I still ended up completely blindsided by three of the first four chapters being focused on detailing the protagonist’s sexual escapades with his maid and combat instructor. Frankly, I don’t think I’ve encountered something so antithetical to what I’m looking for in a story since Siren’s Song.

  • Fake Saint of the Year #4 & The Frontier Lord #2

Posted on March 5, 2024 4:09 am by Offkorn Comment

Nise Seijo‘s conclusion turned out to be a total disappointment, coming across much like a ‘what if?’ fanfic. The Off to Japan segment in particular is just beyond baffling due to its massive food focus. Was the author just bottling up their desire to write a travelogue this whole time? Basically, unless you’re absolutely desperate for a contrived happy ending, stick with treating the third novel as the series’ finale.

The second Ryoumin 0-nin Start novel meanwhile is much like the first, which I suppose shouldn’t be surprising since according to the Afterword it’s essentially the second half of the story’s prologue. At the moment I’m cautiously optimistic for future developments, but the indications of potential future romantic tensions do not bode well.

  • LEVER ACTION & INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH MAGIC

Posted on March 3, 2024 3:07 am by Offkorn Comment

To my great surprise Lever Action turned out to be a perfectly normal fantasy/mecha-infused western. Unlike RavensDagger‘s other books I’ve read, there’s practically no comedy here and events are solidly grounded.

I can see why some people might think Macronomicon is a Brandon Sanderson alt; the massive output, the style of character banter, and technically-inclined world building all have parallels. Their first Industrial Strength Magic novel is a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy action-comedy with some relatively subtle romance aspects that look to be developing into a polyamorous love triangle. Both the complex setting and occasionally caustic character interactions are particular stand-outs, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the series.

  • The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #1-12 & Metaworld Chronicles Ch201-497

Posted on February 28, 2024 2:36 pm by Offkorn Comment

A work I initially skipped over for reasons I can’t recall, Stuart Grosse‘s Lich Returnee series turned out to be somewhat similar to Arifureta After. Which is to say it’s a story about what happens to an overpowered isekai antihero when they manage to return to Earth only to find that the world is not as mundane as previously thought.

This story has little in the way of dedicated comedic aspects however and no romance whatsoever, instead being focused primarily on mechanic/worldbuilding discussion with a subfocus on action. Though there are some issues with repetition, and being novellas each book is roughly half the size of your average LN, the pacing is handled amazingly well with smooth transitions from event to event. That the author doesn’t rely upon cliffhangers is also a mark in their favor.

On a whim I decided to take a look at the web novel source material for a couple of the recent series I had been reading, and discovered to my shock that David J. Wuto‘s Metaworld Chronicles happened to have roughly seven more books of content available to read. So read them I did.

On the one hand, the ‘university years’ unfortunately happen to take up the vast majority of that additional content with her graduation only finally taking place rather recently. On the other, very little time is actually spent in or around said universities. Most of the action takes place either on field trips to various exotic locales (South America, the Underdark, the Asian steppes, Antarctica, Aukland), where things have to die, or is focused on the protagonist’s various business and kingdom-building endeavors. The base setting also undergoes some changes, first to the UK and then to mid-Asia.

Anyway; it’s good. Real good for the most part. Just have to be forewarned that every now and again you’ll get a chapter that’s far too overdramatic by half.

  • ALL I GOT IS THIS STAT MENU & MAGICAL GIRL: CRYSTAL GENOCIDE

Posted on February 20, 2024 11:07 am by Offkorn Comment

The All I Got is This Stat Menu series, by J.J. Ackerknecht, is interesting for not being escapist. While the protagonists do almost always win, it’s almost never without significant cost; while they get free power from a leveling system, leveling is both restricted and capped fairly low besides; though they save the world, the various ‘old world’ authorities tend to be shortsighted/selfish assholes who marginalize them.

It’s a highly well-balanced mix of elements that works incredibly well… mostly. The one discordant note is the central romance, which feels very much tacked on, as though the author only included it because it was expected. On a more personal note I was incredibly aggravated by the way the main protagonist instantly caved to the unreasonable demands of yet another power-mad control freak at the end of the third book (only saving grace is that it doesn’t look like that situation will survive contact outside the Sol system).

RavensDagger‘s Magical Girl Crystal Genocide novel has the same energy as Dead Tired without any of the intentionally bad dad jokes. Which is to say that it’s fantastic in all respects. Particularly notable is that it works perfectly well as either a stand alone story or the start of a new series.

  • Legend of the Arch Magus & Dragon Missing

Posted on February 7, 2024 10:46 am by Offkorn Comment

Michael Sisa‘s Legend of the Arch Magus novels are an unambiguous guilty pleasure sort of series. Just an overpowered protagonist steamrolling his way through various issues thanks to a combination of pure personal domination and suspiciously reasonable secondary characters, with a small bit of kingdom building thrown in for good measure. So long as you don’t expect any sort of nuance it should be enjoyable enough for fans of the genre (though do beware of both pointless cliffhangers and fairly low page counts).

The first book in Talia Beckett‘s Dragon Apparent series has a couple issues. The first is the setting: Why is it raining so much in Los Angeles? Why are the dragons more afraid of humans than unstoppable soul-devouring centipedes? The second is more severe: Most of the characters, the protagonist in particular, suffer from either suicidal stupidity or inconsistent characterization (sometimes both).

Maybe things smooth out later on, but right now I just don’t have the stomach to power through such high levels of bizarre naïveté.

  • Dead to the World & The Portal Wars Saga

Posted on February 1, 2024 7:06 am by Offkorn Comment

Annabel Chase‘s Crossroads Queen series starts off well enough with nothing really to complain about, featuring a nicely varied set of personalities and event development which doesn’t come across as forced or particularly questionable. That said, I’m not in the mood for another ‘independent loner discovers the joys of companionship’ series right now so I’m not sure when if ever I’ll pick up the continuations.

The Portal Wars Saga, by James E. Wisher, is roughly split into two halves: The first four books cover the subjugation of the main continent, while the remaining three focus on the protagonist’s quest for immortality. That first half is pretty good if you’re looking for an anti-hero themed ‘persecution-to-domination’ story but suffers a bit where female characters are concerned. I have no idea why the author seemed so dead-set on sidelining the MC’s wife, but all it managed to accomplish was create a bunch of needless awkwardness that drags the story down.

As for the second half, I doubt I’ll ever bother with it since the whole immortality subplot doesn’t seem very interesting.

  • The Adventures of a Xeno-Archaeologist & Metaworld Chronicles

Posted on January 27, 2024 5:45 pm by Offkorn Comment

Jenny Schwartz‘s Adventures of a Xeno-Archaeologist series ends up a mostly solid sci-fi adventure that inexplicably suffers from a shotgun romance. I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone could think spilling all your darkest secrets to someone on your second meeting, followed by them immediately discarding all their responsibilities in response to declare their unconditional devotion, is a believable (or, hell, even desirable) scenario.

Why not just… have them be previous acquaintances? Her former husband was a fighter pilot in the same force! The two could’ve easily been set up to have a plausible connection and it’s just beyond baffling that the author went with this not quite love at first sight situation instead. That aside though, yeah, it’s a pretty fun series.

The Metaworld Chronicles novels, by David J. Wuto, have a number of interesting aspects: A surprisingly dynamic modified version of D&D/Pathfinder‘s magic system, being set in an urban fantasy version of Oceania and Shanghai, and a curious mixture of altruism and coldbloodedness in its character dynamics.

I’m certainly less than thrilled about how long the author’s been dragging out this university arc (which, primarily, seems to be an excuse to dump loads of worldbuilding exposition in the guise of lectures), but aside from that the only thing I can complain about is how after the action switches to China everyone spontaneously forgets the protagonist’s been named heir of her maternal grandfather’s family line. Like, it seems like that would’ve been a hard counter to all the inheritance drama.

  • Rebuild World III & OTHERSIDE PICNIC

Posted on January 25, 2024 1:53 am by Offkorn Comment

The third part of Rebuild World is once more composed of two novels… two novels which don’t really have much in common plotwise. What they do share are some pretty painfully idiotic scenes involving the Druncam hunters to the point I hope to never see them again.

Urasekai Picnic is notable for being something of a collection of sequential short stories rather than a conventional novel. Sadly, while the protagonist being a low-key psychopath is an interesting choice, both main characters are pretty dumb with a tendency to keep reacting to things as if they had never encountered supernatural phenomenon before. Not sure at this point if I’m going to follow it any further.

  • ~A JOURNEY OF~ BLACK and RED & The Calamitous ~Bob~

Posted on January 17, 2024 11:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Despite the ‘this was originally a web serial’ warnings in the Foreword of Alex Gilbert‘s Journey of Black and Red series, for the most part the books feel very much like proper books. Only the occasional missed stopping point hints toward their origins.

Content-wise the first seven novels feature a nice mix of comedy and action accompanying a consistent series of plot developments covering the period from North America’s Revolutionary War through its Civil War. What’s particularly notable is that while a lot of urban fantasy series will reference some past event that separates their timeline from actual historic events, this one decides to actually focus on the divergent event itself. At this point the only thing I have to complain about is that it’s never properly explained how the protagonist was able to fake her death when dead vampires are supposed to turn to ash.

A work by the same author, The Calamitous Bob is remarkable for being completely different. Setting, characters, comedy style; all different. The only similarity the two share is the protagonists’ absolute mercilessness toward their enemies. While for the most part that’s a good thing and the variety is welcome… this series is unfortunately nowhere near as well constructed.

Although perfectly solid up through the third book, it begins to deteriorate early in the fourth following the ‘Birth of Harrak’ arc’s conclusion only to end up a complete mess by the end of the fifth. The worst part is, I can’t even see what the author was going for that would result in such a pile of inconsistent and self-contradicting plotlines. There’s just no discernable rhyme or reason whatsoever to the event developments.
