  • ANTECEDENTS’ LEGACY & Villainess’s Redemption

Posted on August 1, 2026 6:42 am by Offkorn Comment

Daniel Schinhofen‘s first Antecedents’ Legacy novel turned out quite different from the other two series of their’s I’ve read. What mainly stands out, in a bad way, is the protagonist’s pronounced horniness alongside the poorly thought-out setting. Moving in combat is lost-tech? Seriously?

The first of Vanessa Rhoswen‘s Reborn Villainess novels starts out rough due the cartoonishness of the villainy on display. Although events then pick up nicely for a time post-regression, it unfortunately soon becomes clear that the protagonist is an idiot. She keeps talking about how she’s a master schemer despite her future schemes having failed miserably and having only managed to destroy her own family (unintentionally). The ‘let’s pretend to faint instead of doing literally anything else’ scene where she ends up concussing herself was one straw too many.

  • Cavalier’s Gambit & Lost in Fiction

Posted on July 25, 2026 6:44 am by Offkorn Comment

Although it starts off quite differently, by the end William D. Arand‘s first Cavalier’s Gambit novel bares a strong resemblance to Privateer’s Commission (which takes place in the same setting). The main difference is that the protagonist here is much more engaged with what’s going on and has a habit of “flirting” with most of the female characters he encounters.

The first of Jin Holland‘s Lost in Fiction novels starts off rocky. Much too rocky. The character actions are incredibly sketchy, the setting is questionable, and there are various (albeit admittedly minor) contradictions in the text. Had to drop it after the F-ranked protagonist somehow manages to solo a harpy nest with zero explanation or details.

  • ACCIDENTAL Demon Lord #2 & Earth Reformation #5

Posted on July 23, 2026 3:53 pm by Offkorn Comment

The second of Edgar Riggs & Gwen Grayson‘s Accidental Demon Lord novels stands out mostly for seeming to have more sex scenes than its predecessor (although it’s also possible it actually has the same amount which only seems like more due to the shorter length). Aside from that it’s… okay. Despite being a direct continuation something feels missing from the early events before the priestess joins the party.

I waffled a bit on whether to pick up Brad Botz‘s fifth Earth Reformation novel after the mixed showing of the fourth. While at first it seemed like I’d made a mistake there, as the early pacing and vault-robbing felt markedly out of place, it eventually levels out to be more or less on par with the second and third novels.

  • LAST LORD of the FEY: AWAKENING & NETHERWITCH

Posted on July 22, 2026 4:30 pm by Offkorn Comment

I picked up Awakening due to greatly enjoying the author‘s Ruinous Return series only to end up swiftly disappointed: The protagonist is insufferably dumb.

The first Netherwitch novel covers the opening two arcs of the web novel version and is not particularly representative of the rest of the series, since the academy setting does not return and the ‘forced’ part of the feminization aspect is softened into something of a re-occurring joke (the transition itself is explored in greater depth later). Overall the general atmosphere brings to mind Kenja no Deshi o Nanoru Kenja, if that series happened to have a central lesbian romance.

HEART DEVIL: Love Conquers All! – The writing style’s a bit looser than I’d prefer but I like the protagonist and the event developments are incredibly entertaining for the most part (it gets overly battle shounen-like at points), even if the transition between the rewritten chapters and originals is rather glaring. Also, I’d strongly suggest skipping the side stories.

How I was Accidentally Summoned in a Cult as the Demon Princess – Reminds me of Ruinous Return. I dislike the rather heavy connection the fantasy world has with Earth, but the rest works well.

CRITICAL ROLEPLAY: I MIN-MAXED FOR ENDGAME, NOT FLAVOR – Remarkably resembles a more serious Leadale. Unfortunately, while the setting is interesting I ended up dropping it shortly after they reached the first town; I don’t like child characters in general and the protagonist’s mindset wasn’t working for me. Why is she hiding her identity if she wants information? People would tell her everything she’d ever want to know by openly moving around as herself.

Teresa Of All Trades – The ‘all trades’ part of the title doesn’t really come into play until around the twentieth chapter, as the protagonist mostly focuses on healing up to that point as part of a party. Anyways, overall I’d say that while the series has a bit of a (lack of) believability issue it nicely scratches that Solo Leveling-like itch for overpowered protagonist progression for a time. Don’t have any interest in following it past the end of the first book though after the dog thing.

Extra’s MANTLE – Developed a strong aversion to the protagonist in the second chapter. Maybe he mellows out later, but his initial reaction to the transmigration is offputting on a number of levels.

MECHANICAL INSTINCT – There are a great many problems with the protagonist’s inner monologue and I have no desire to see if it ever becomes consistently coherent.

  • The Transmigrated Side Character & Sixteen Ladies Enter the Palace

Posted on July 18, 2026 1:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The Transmigrated Side Character (subtitle: She Was Written to Shine Someone Else’s Light – He Had Other Plans) is a fairly entertaining little romance novella. Main issues would be that the setup feels completely unnatural, no reasons are given for why the protagonist acts as she does nor how she got there, and the events in the second half are pretty rushed.

D Abraham‘s first The Transmigrated Villainess Doesn’t Want The Crown Princess’s Position novel is a curious mix of disparate elements; Chinese palace drama, English period piece, and Japanese light novel. Somehow this combination manages to work despite the fact that it really, really shouldn’t. I think it’s mainly because the focus is more on the characters than the setting, which would would explain why I quickly started to lose interest in the second half as the frequency of rather unbelievable events picked up speed.

  • BONES in the DARK & The Baron’s Bastard

Posted on July 16, 2026 2:22 pm by Offkorn Comment

TF Warden‘s first Bones in the Dark novel focuses on a naive mage academy graduate as she stumbles into an escalating series of perilous situations. It starts off a bit rough but picks up nicely as the protagonist starts acting, instead of reacting, and coming to terms with how practice differs from theory.

Continuing on to the webnovel version I found there was a second complete book along with the beginnings of a third. That second changes the setting but keeps everything else about the series consistent, further spurring the protagonist’s growth both mentally and magically. So all in all a great start, and I’ll likely continue to follow the story for the foreseeable future.

The first of A.A. Harris‘ Defiant Necromancer novels also starts off a bit rough and never shakes the sense that something is about to go terribly wrong (which makes it rather difficult to read). It clearly seems to be working toward becoming an overpowered protagonist harem series, but at this point it’s more an underdog revenge story constantly balanced on the edge of failure… and I’m not sure I can continue forcing myself through the growing pains.

I picked up Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku (Japanese subtitle: Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku) hoping for something along the lines of Lv2 kara Cheat without the problematic romance aspects, only to instead get something closer to Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. A significantly less believable Smartphone. Although I tried to force my way through the childhood arc to see if it maybe got better… the rescue of the princess was one questionable romance flag too many.

Teisou Gyakuten Sekai no Doutei Henkyou Ryoushu Kishi also has believability issues, albeit less severe and centered on the setting itself rather than the initial event development; the role reversal is poorly implemented and surface-level at best (Honor of Duty looks like an intricately woven masterpiece in comparison). Worse, far worse, is that the protagonist appears to be an insufferable incel who can’t stop talking about his dick.

  • AcademY LIFE as an Archmage & CITY of CHAMPIONS: ONLINE

Posted on July 11, 2026 2:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first of Max Pants‘ Ardenth Academy novels brings to mind a fantasy take on Quantum Leap. An idea staggeringly well executed; the novel’s a practically perfect start to an overpowered protagonist series. The only nitpicks I have are that there’s a bit of repetition with the roommate’s dialog in the first classroom scenes and the mechanism behind the protagonist’s body swapping is both not explained and referenced in what may be a contradictory manner (depending on future events).

Stuart Grosse‘s first City of Champions: Online novella is heavily (anti-)racism themed and reads a bit more like a proof of concept than a proper story. It’s not overtly bad in any particular way… it just comes across as noticeably unpolished and overly focused on its theme (particularly when compared to some of his other series). Not sure at this point whether or not I’ll finish the rest.

  • ACCIDENTAL Demon Lord & IGNITE

Posted on July 11, 2026 12:12 am by Offkorn Comment

Edgar Riggs & Gwen Grayson‘s first Accidental Demon Lord novel brings to mind Yuusha, Yamemasu: A post-isekai with a centuries-old hero protagonist tired of the job, who ends up supporting those he used to oppose, focused on comedy and to a lesser extent romance. It’s fully entertaining from start to finish with my only complaint being that the humor occasionally dips into ‘overly silly/childish’ territory.

The fifth of Chase Kilgore‘s De’Vas Chronicles starts out well enough only to end up with an assortment of developments I’m not fond of in the slightest. We get another ‘stuck on Vas’ segment (albeit fortunately a short one), a couple instances of the ‘protagonist experiences a forced loss’ trope, more super-powered enemies appearing out of thin air, and (of course) yet another level of antagonist beyond the former councilwoman’s shadowy backer. I see no reason to continue the series at this point.
