  • ESCAPING GRAVITY #1-2 & QUARKS AND QI #2

Posted on July 9, 2026 2:09 pm by Offkorn Comment

I’d originally put off reading Bruce Sentar‘s first Escaping Gravity novel due to the initial description being an incoherent mess. That was apparently fixed at some point, and as with the author’s other series this beginning at least is quite entertaining (the main love interest having a Saya no Uta vibe is an interesting choice). Sadly, it already begins to buckle in the second novel with Lily suddenly acting like Returner’s Defiance‘s Simone, a whole host of problems with how the second love interest gets established, and some extremely questionable plot devlopments.

The second of J.L. Williams‘ Quarks and Qi novels picks up shortly after the first one ended and progresses along in much the same way; the main difference is that the sex scene this time around, and probably future ones going forward, is BDSM-themed. Considering where and how it ended however I have strong doubts that any continuation will manage to be in any way believable.

  • I’m Just a Villager: So What? & Lost Mask

Posted on July 8, 2026 3:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

There are several problems with the first Murabito Desu ga Nani ka? novel, most of which seem to be a result of the author having a questionable grasp on reality; frequently something will be stated only to have it get contradicted a few paragraphs later (e.g. I have no cheat skills -> I have two cheat skills, I want to be her equal -> I want her to stay weak and protect her) or a character will suddenly act completely differently/unbelievably.

Compounding that issue, this English translation has some noticeable errors where a character will clearly be talking about one person while the text refers to someone else. Had to drop it about halfway through, at the start of the third chapter, after that ludicrous meeting with the dragon king.

Chad Maske‘s Lost Mask is the first in a new series which feels a lot like their Moonrise novel. This one is effectively pure fantasy though (technically it appears to be post-apocalyptic) without any isekai aspects, a sizable crafting focus, and seems to be angling for more serious relationship development. It’s a lot of fun for the most part… although nearly everything to do with the rigged sparring match is fairly aggravating on a number of levels.

  • Our Party Nearly Wiped and Then Everything Went Downhill & VENUS MISSION

Posted on June 16, 2026 1:15 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first Zenmetsu End o Shinimonogurui de Kaihi shita. Party ga Yanda. novel has an interesting setup but suffers from a couple annoying character archetypes. Mainly the protagonist and his mentor. The former is the type that apologizes for everything and constantly gets lost in his own head; I know the setting is a grimdark fantasy world and you really hate that and love happy endings, you told me, you don’t need to keep bringing it up every other chapter. The latter… is a century-old nonhuman that inexplicably both looks and acts like a human child. Really could’ve done without her.

Venus Mission (English subtitle: I Was an Assassin-for-Hire Who Died, Now I’m Hunting Heroes in Another World) is closer to what I expected Ansatsushadearu Ore no Status ga Yuusha yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi nodaga to be like. That said, it’s only barely tolerable if you completely turn off your brain and even then there’s the notable technical issue of it often being difficult to tell who’s talking at any given time.

Despite the annoyances, I’ll probably follow them both for at least one more volume since I’m kind of starved for LNs when anything published by J-Novel Club is out of the running.

  • THE Misdeeds ~OF AN~ Extremely Arrogant -Villain- Aristocrat #3 & I Like Villains, so I Reincarnated as One

Posted on June 14, 2026 1:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

I was wavering on whether to continue Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou following the second novel, and this third novel cements my decision to drop it. There’s almost nothing praiseworthy about the uncomfortable harem elements it mostly focuses on and the breakneck parade of poorly implemented timeskips in the last fifth or so is particularly dire.

Akuyakuzuki no Ore, Oshi Chara ni Tensei (massive subtitle omitted) opens with a very poor first impression. The problem here is that the protagonist has the personality of a squealing fangirl… and his object of obsession is the character whose body he’s now inhabiting. It’s really, really awkward.

  • Earth Reformation #1-4 & HolloW

Posted on June 14, 2026 9:11 am by Offkorn Comment

Brad Botz‘s Earth Reformation series reminds me of late Guardian of Aster Fall mixed with a bit of Corsairs & Cataclysms‘ setting. While for the most part a guilty-pleasure kind of overpowered protagonist series it does take the unusual path of focusing on an old, well-established individual (though it also partially de-ages him for no apparent reason) and doesn’t have any notable romance elements.

The first book’s main issue is that the few parts focused on the protagonist’s daughter don’t make a great deal of sense. Why did they flee the starter village instead of confronting the businessman? How did the weasel-faced man become a Guardian? Why was the businessman so obsessed with tracking her down? The next two books ignore her for the most part and end up notably better as a result. The fourth then does something very different, and although it’s better than expected the pacing leaves quite a bit to be desired; a good two-thirds of the novel deal with the first year, the second year then gets a few chapters, and the last two years get what amount to barely a chapter each.

Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti‘s first Crown of Hearts and Chaos novel starts out a little shaky, making one wonder why so much time is spent following around dead men walking, and it’s not until the two protagonists meet up that the novel settles into a more standard ‘enemies to lovers’ framework that works well for a time. Unfortunately, the female protagonist is far too soft to match her declarations and ends up making the same damn mistake over and over again. Only positive thing I can say is that at least she’s not rewarded for it.

  • DRAGON Conqueror #1 & QUEST ACADEMY: SILVERS #1

Posted on June 10, 2026 11:09 am by Offkorn Comment

There is something very wrong with the dialog in Hercules West‘s first Dragon Conqueror novel. Although it starts out well enough, after the protagonist transfers to the new world it begins to cycle through three styles; normal, robotically wooden, and ‘porno transcription’. That wasn’t what got me to drop it a little over a quarter of the way through though. No, it was how after the protagonist asked if the country they were in was powerful for the third time everyone responded as if the topic had never come up before.

Ended up dropping Brian J. Nordon‘s first Quest Academy: Silvers novel a little over a quarter of the way in as well. Neither the dialog nor writing style was the problem however… at least not past the train segment which contains paragraphs that read like they’re missing a sentence or two. The issue here is that the author appears to have wanted the protagonist to have a ‘learning moment’ and implemented it in the most unbelievably ham-fisted manner possible.

He didn’t know enchanted items drained essence despite working in an auction house? The in-depth rune primer he bought didn’t mention the runes’ essence draw? He spontaneously lost the ability to gauge his own essence reserves? This perfectly enchanted shirt with beyond-expert runecrafting is actually proof that his power is totally not perfect at all? Just incredibly painful contortions that do not bode well for future developments.

  • Beastkin Healer & Fostering Faust

Posted on June 8, 2026 10:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Austin Beck‘s first Mend or Smite novel comes across much like a slightly grittier White Mage (minus the genderswap elements), with the protagonist’s particular brand of reserved stoicism doing wonders to compliment the somewhat excessive forwardness of the various love interests. One thing to note though is that the cover is a bit of false advertising: The main love interest is a rabbitgirl. The wolfgirl doesn’t show up until the last third, doesn’t dress like that, and her relationship with the protagonist doesn’t go beyond a statement of intent.

The first of Randi Darren‘s Fostering Faust novels contains a couple unfortunate surprises, one of which is that the protagonist is a purestrain sociopath with no personal goals beyond doing what’s expected of him. In his previous life that meant climbing the corporate ladder and making as much money as possible, while in this new one it means fulfilling his deal quota as efficiently as possible. The desire for efficiency then leads into the far more unpleasant second surprise: Rather than focusing on making Faustian bargains with people who have more to lose than they think, the novel instead revolves around training a bunch of financially compromised women as sex slaves.

  • Magent #1-3 & Faerie BAD DECISIONS

Posted on June 6, 2026 5:04 pm by Offkorn Comment

Dante King‘s Magent series (subtitle: NEW YORK SUPERNATURAL DIVISION) starts off quite a bit better than its description would have you believe. In the second novel though the protagonist catches a bad case of naivety and the government agency begins to reach painfully realistic levels of corruption and hypocrisy. That said, it still ends up… decent.

The third novel however spontaneously combusts around two-thirds of the way through with some of the most schizophrenic storytelling I’ve had the misfortune of reading lately: The protagonist goes on an emo bender about fearing power, gets convinced to power-up anyway, proceeds to get his ass kicked afterward by a random nobody mage, and then everybody gets teleported into a roundtable discussion and everything’s instantly resolved. It’s horrific.

I picked up M.J. Michaels‘ Faerie Bad Decisions, the first in a series of assorted stand-alone stories, on a whim. The description certainly sounded amusing enough and the book itself absolutely delivered on its promise; a sequence of deranged events that resulted in the protagonist ending up married in Vegas. It’s a lot of fun and the author seems to have a particular gift for mixing deadpan and absurdist humor.

  • INTO THE BLACK & FREE VRMMO LIFE #1

Posted on June 5, 2026 1:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Into the Black, a sci-fi VRMMORPG novella series by Stuart Grosse with significant references to various other works, is much better than I was expecting. Fundamentally, it’s like an amalgam of Lich Returnee and Corsairs & Cataclysms; the structure and atmosphere of the former with the protagonist, harem, and sex scene frequency of the latter.

Most of the series’ inspiration comes from fairly major franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40k, but there are also sizable references to Starcraft and Resident Evil/Biohazard (of all things) with more minor nods to things like Portal and Youjou Senki. Some of these work better than others and ultimately I ended up having to agree with one of the Amazon reviews that the high point is the harvester battle. Mostly because shortly after is when ‘hellspace’ (WH40k‘s warpspace), which is tied both directly and indirectly to almost all the worst parts of the series, shows up. Aside from that and everything related to it, my only complaint is that the implementation of slavery is fairly inconsistent and bordering on unbelievable.

On the other hand the author’s Free VRMMO Life novella series is unfortunately just as bad as I expected it to be. However, it wasn’t the acts of depravity that caused me to drop it. No, instead it’s how this gameworld that boasts total realism isn’t realistic in the slightest. Give yourself a 2-foot long dick and suffer no ill effects? Instantly add permanent enchantments to items with no material cost? Fresh characters still in the Tutorial can create unresistable, unremovable slave collars? Nope. Sorry. Hard pass.

  • THE SHERIFF: CANIS STATION & THE ADMIRAL & THE ASSISTANT

Posted on June 4, 2026 3:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

Montgomery Quinn‘s The Sheriff: Canis Station seems to be the start of a new sci-fi series where humans are not part of the galactic community… and to be honest I’m not really sure what to compare it to. While it’s got a similar quantity of and style to its sex scenes as the author’s other series I’ve read, the setting, characters, and event developments are all rather different. For the most part it works well enough, but I’m not sold on the conclusion’s spontaneously elusive alien bodysnatchers angle.

A stand-alone novel, Roger Black‘s The Admiral & The Assistant is divided into three parts. The first covers the protagonists’ first meeting up to their admitting their feelings to one another, the second deals with advancing that relationship from something covert into being fully official, and then the last third gets a bit weird with a focus on a Mass Effect Reaper-like threat. Overall it’s quite good and I can’t say I have any complaints beyond it being hard to believe that the galaxy-ending threat only has a single ship.
