  • THE Misdeeds ~OF AN~ Extremely Arrogant -Villain- Aristocrat #3 & I Like Villains, so I Reincarnated as One

Posted on June 14, 2026 1:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

I was wavering on whether to continue Kiwamete Gouman Taru Akuyaku Kizoku no Shogyou following the second novel, and this third novel cements my decision to drop it. There’s almost nothing praiseworthy about the uncomfortable harem elements it mostly focuses on and the breakneck parade of poorly implemented timeskips in the last fifth or so is particularly dire.

Akuyakuzuki no Ore, Oshi Chara ni Tensei (massive subtitle omitted) opens with a very poor first impression. The problem here is that the protagonist has the personality of a squealing fangirl… and his object of obsession is the character whose body he’s now inhabiting. It’s really, really awkward.

  • Earth Reformation #1-4 & HolloW

Posted on June 14, 2026 9:11 am by Offkorn Comment

Brad Botz‘s Earth Reformation series reminds me of late Guardian of Aster Fall mixed with a bit of Corsairs & Cataclysms‘ setting. While for the most part a guilty-pleasure kind of overpowered protagonist series it does take the unusual path of focusing on an old, well-established individual (though it also partially de-ages him for no apparent reason) and doesn’t have any notable romance elements.

The first book’s main issue is that the few parts focused on the protagonist’s daughter don’t make a great deal of sense. Why did they flee the starter village instead of confronting the businessman? How did the weasel-faced man become a Guardian? Why was the businessman so obsessed with tracking her down? The next two books ignore her for the most part and end up notably better as a result. The fourth then does something very different, and although it’s better than expected the pacing leaves quite a bit to be desired; a good two-thirds of the novel deal with the first year, the second year then gets a few chapters, and the last two years get what amount to barely a chapter each.

Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti‘s first Crown of Hearts and Chaos novel starts out a little shaky, making one wonder why so much time is spent following around dead men walking, and it’s not until the two protagonists meet up that the novel settles into a more standard ‘enemies to lovers’ framework that works well for a time. Unfortunately, the female protagonist is far too soft to match her declarations and ends up making the same damn mistake over and over again. Only positive thing I can say is that at least she’s not rewarded for it.

  • DRAGON Conqueror #1 & QUEST ACADEMY: SILVERS #1

Posted on June 10, 2026 11:09 am by Offkorn Comment

There is something very wrong with the dialog in Hercules West‘s first Dragon Conqueror novel. Although it starts out well enough, after the protagonist transfers to the new world it begins to cycle through three styles; normal, robotically wooden, and ‘porno transcription’. That wasn’t what got me to drop it a little over a quarter of the way through though. No, it was how after the protagonist asked if the country they were in was powerful for the third time everyone responded as if the topic had never come up before.

Ended up dropping Brian J. Nordon‘s first Quest Academy: Silvers novel a little over a quarter of the way in as well. Neither the dialog nor writing style was the problem however… at least not past the train segment which contains paragraphs that read like they’re missing a sentence or two. The issue here is that the author appears to have wanted the protagonist to have a ‘learning moment’ and implemented it in the most unbelievably ham-fisted manner possible.

He didn’t know enchanted items drained essence despite working in an auction house? The in-depth rune primer he bought didn’t mention the runes’ essence draw? He spontaneously lost the ability to gauge his own essence reserves? This perfectly enchanted shirt with beyond-expert runecrafting is actually proof that his power is totally not perfect at all? Just incredibly painful contortions that do not bode well for future developments.

  • Beastkin Healer & Fostering Faust

Posted on June 8, 2026 10:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Austin Beck‘s first Mend or Smite novel comes across much like a slightly grittier White Mage (minus the genderswap elements), with the protagonist’s particular brand of reserved stoicism doing wonders to compliment the somewhat excessive forwardness of the various love interests. One thing to note though is that the cover is a bit of false advertising: The main love interest is a rabbitgirl. The wolfgirl doesn’t show up until the last third, doesn’t dress like that, and her relationship with the protagonist doesn’t go beyond a statement of intent.

The first of Randi Darren‘s Fostering Faust novels contains a couple unfortunate surprises, one of which is that the protagonist is a purestrain sociopath with no personal goals beyond doing what’s expected of him. In his previous life that meant climbing the corporate ladder and making as much money as possible, while in this new one it means fulfilling his deal quota as efficiently as possible. The desire for efficiency then leads into the far more unpleasant second surprise: Rather than focusing on making Faustian bargains with people who have more to lose than they think, the novel instead revolves around training a bunch of financially compromised women as sex slaves.

  • INTO THE BLACK & FREE VRMMO LIFE #1

Posted on June 5, 2026 1:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Into the Black, a sci-fi VRMMORPG novella series by Stuart Grosse with significant references to various other works, is much better than I was expecting. Fundamentally, it’s like an amalgam of Lich Returnee and Corsairs & Cataclysms; the structure and atmosphere of the former with the protagonist, harem, and sex scene frequency of the latter.

Most of the series’ inspiration comes from fairly major franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40k, but there are also sizable references to Starcraft and Resident Evil/Biohazard (of all things) with more minor nods to things like Portal and Youjou Senki. Some of these work better than others and ultimately I ended up having to agree with one of the Amazon reviews that the high point is the harvester battle. Mostly because shortly after is when ‘hellspace’ (WH40k‘s warpspace), which is tied both directly and indirectly to almost all the worst parts of the series, shows up. Aside from that and everything related to it, my only complaint is that the implementation of slavery is fairly inconsistent and bordering on unbelievable.

On the other hand the author’s Free VRMMO Life novella series is unfortunately just as bad as I expected it to be. However, it wasn’t the acts of depravity that caused me to drop it. No, instead it’s how this gameworld that boasts total realism isn’t realistic in the slightest. Give yourself a 2-foot long dick and suffer no ill effects? Instantly add permanent enchantments to items with no material cost? Fresh characters still in the Tutorial can create unresistable, unremovable slave collars? Nope. Sorry. Hard pass.

  • The LEGEND of WILLIAM OH & THE INHERITANCE

Posted on May 30, 2026 10:56 pm by Offkorn Comment

I first heard of Macronomicon‘s Legend of William Oh series at the conclusion of their Industrial Strength Magic webnovel. Initially dismissing it because the description didn’t seem like something I’d like, tower climbing not being fundamentally different from dungeon diving, eventually I decided to give it a chance when the second published novel appeared in my recommendations.

The main thing that stood out is that it has a very similar atmosphere to that earlier series, with the key differences being the setting and a greater level of quippy-ness in exchange for barely-there romantic elements that pretty much never rise above a tertiary focus. The character interactions are what carry it and they do so through that second novel well enough that I continued straight on to the web novel version. Unfortunately it didn’t take all that long to hit a snag; the zombie apocalypse floor is absolutely terrible. After that point it also introduces an incredibly dumb paladin nemesis, and I had to drop it after the protagonist somehow gets knocked out in battle against him despite being exponentially more powerful than the first time they fought.

I’ve been leery of Ilona Andrews‘ novels after the massive disappointment of their ‘last’ Kate Daniels entry and so initially didn’t give their newer Breach Wars series much thought. As it turns out, the first novel is something of a riff on Na Honjaman Level-Up (minus the System aspects) with a touch of Kate Daniels flair. It’s pretty damn good all things considered… although I’m not sure why it tries to incorporate images almost like a Japanese light novel would.

  • The Honor of Duty & Wings of LIFE

Posted on May 30, 2026 1:56 pm by Offkorn Comment

Defying my expectations, rather than a conventional male-led harem A.R. Rend‘s The Honor of Duty turned out more like a genderswapped female-lead harem… although it’s not a simple relabeling and some effort was expended so that the women still have feminine traits while the men still have masculine ones. The result is a mix of both interesting and awkward aspects with, for me at least, the latter outweighing the former by the end.

Meghan Le Fay‘s first Dragonbound Chronicles novel starts out like it’s going to be a standard ‘enemies to lovers’ kind of thing and then unfurls in a very different direction. While for the most part it’s quite good, good enough that I could even forgive the questionable communication issues and ludicrous mistaken identity subplot, the utterly bizarre twist toward the end with the attacking army completely extinguished any interest in following it further.

  • The BALLAD of FALLING DRAGONS & QUARKS AND QI

Posted on May 26, 2026 2:20 pm by Offkorn Comment

Sarah A. Parker‘s second Moonfall novel has suffered from a number of release delays that, after seeing the rather unfortunate additions to the book’s title, appear to have been publisher-related. While this still hits the same notes as the prequel, it feels like it’s going in circles narratively and I ended up dropping it halfway through when the stupid blood-bond subplot reappears out of nowhere.

A novel that briefly appeared on my recommendation list, yet stuck around in the back of my thoughts until recently when I finally gave in and picked it up, J.L. Williams‘ Quarks and Qi turned out shockingly entertaining. It has a similar concept as Manaforged Robotics‘ except (perhaps because the technology here is like magic) with the two genres far better integrated. I didn’t even mind that the fantasy world is cultivation-focused.

  • A BOND BETWEEN EQUALS & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #22

Posted on May 24, 2026 12:55 pm by Offkorn Comment

The main thing to be aware of going into Luca De Rosa‘s A Bond Between Equals is that it features frequent, detailed, sexual scenes which tend to have a heavy focus on fluid dynamics. Less detailed is the System implementation, justified in-universe by it being on its last legs (to a greater degree than Heretical Fishing‘s), and the character interactions can be a bit uneven. What ended up being a deal-killer for me was how that whole computer room scene at the end played out and its implications for future developments… most notably the complete about-face on the harem issue.

Stuart Grosse‘s twenty-second Lich Returnee novella is one of the more laid-back ones focused on magecraft. It does however end with the indication that both the dragon subplot and the ‘left a hero behind on that fantasy world’ subplot are going to take center stage soon.

  • the Serpent & the WINGS of NIGHT & Reborn in Blood #1-2

Posted on May 21, 2026 1:12 am by Offkorn Comment

Carissa Broadbent‘s first Crowns of Nyaxia novel starts out quite good and remains so for most of the first third despite a couple questionably forced events. During the second trial however the protagonist suddenly transmorphs into a suicidal bleeding heart for no discernable reason (immediately after coldly dispatching an acquaintance no less), which was offputting enough for me to drop it right there.

Originally having avoided April Conrad‘s Reborn in Blood series due to the somewhat alarming subtitle (Reincarnated As My Hot Vampire Alt), I eventually decided to give it a chance in a fit of boredom. The first book at least ends up decent enough; while there’s a persistent sense of wrongness about how events play out, with things like the central romance feeling forced and early events not quite coming across as natural, it reminded me enough of series like Leadale and Eve of Destruction to push on into the second hoping it would improve.

It does not improve. The second book in the series in fact gets far worse in a number of ways extremely quickly.
